Night number one of Central Missouri Speedway’s Memorial Day weekend is now in the books and after all was said and done, Jimmy Morris of Blue Springs, Missouri picked up the biggest street stock payday in the local area by claiming the victory in the track’s annual Street Stock special event! It was also night one qualifying for the ‘mighty’ modifieds as they gear up for Sunday night’s grand finale $3,000-to-win race. Dustin Boney of Kansas City, Missouri earned the pole position for Sunday night’s main event. In ULMA Late Model action, Brett Wood of Warrensburg raced his way to victory while in the b-mods, Jacob Ebert of Oak Grove came away with the win during a fierce night of action at the speedway.
There were 27 street stock competitors on hand competing in four heat races to determine the starting line-up for the high-paying event later in the night. Qualifying heat race victories went to Larry McCrackin, Devin Irvin, Michael Mullins, and Marc Carter. Drivers earned starting positions in the 25-lap special event by accumulating passing points in the heat races. Marc Carter earned the pole position with Jimmy Morris starting on the outside row. In what was to be an action-packed race with very hard racing throughout the pack, there were many drivers who showed their power as the race progressed. Carter and Morris were strong at the front of the field as was Irvin, until contact with another competitor on lap 13 ended his strong run inside the top three. Chad Eickleberry had a resurgent week and ran hard inside the top five for the entire race distance by moving into fourth early on. Mullins and Bryce McMillin both had to exit the race early as they fell to race attrition as did McCrackin with a flat tire. Jay Barnes, Jerry Schmidt, Brian Ziegler and Don Dannar were just a few of the drivers not able to finish the event as the laps wore down.
Things got very interesting near the end of the race as modified regular Jim Moody, substitute driving in the #74 car normally driven by Herb Dannar made his way to the front in a torrid battle with Eickleberry for second. Any of the three cars at the top could have won the event, but in the end it was Morris who took home the big price ahead of a hard-charging Moody and third-running Eickleberry. Nate Barnes, Scotty Dukes, and Larry Ferris stayed out of trouble and brought home top six placements, just ahead of T.J. Faulkenberry, Justin Seifert, and Brett Cox.
In modified action, the always stout field of drivers who make their way to the track were lightning quick on the CMS high banks. Just like the street stocks, the modified drivers had to earn passing points to vie for starting spots; however, instead of a main event, modified drivers were gunning for prized starting spots in a 20-car, 20-lap scramble event. The top 16 from passing points were secured into the scramble with the top 12 passing point’s earners taking part in a re-draw to determine their scramble starting positions. Starting positions 17 thru 20 were determined by the top four finishers in the b-main event. Terry Schultz earned the most passing points and then re-drew the number one to earn the scramble pole position.
Modified heat victories went to Schultz, Tyler Schmidt of Easton, Kansas, Dean Wille of Warrensburg, and Luke Driskell of Stillwell, Kansas. The hotly contested b-main event went to Jason Bodenhamer from deep in the field over Chase Junghans of Manhattan, Kansas. With the stage set for the night one scramble, in which the top 12 finishers secured spots on the inside row starting positions for Sunday night’s big race, the eager drivers took the initial green flag.
Sedalia’s Terry Schultz shot out to an early race lead in the scramble event with Darren Bennett, Jason Thompson, and Tyler Schmidt close behind. At times, Schultz pulled out to a comfortable lead over the rest of the field as Thompson and Schmidt raced hard for a spot inside the top three. As the laps wound down, Dustin Boney brought his #22 Hughes chassis into the mix with several passes for position during the 20-lap event. During late-race restarts it was clear that Boney was searching around for a way around Schultz who held the lead until lap 18, at which time Boney grabbed the lead. Chad Lyle was a consistent top five runner throughout the event with Bodenhamer creeping up from his seventeenth starting position late in the race. In the end, Boney once again bested the rest of his competitors and earned the pole for Sunday night’s $3,000 to win special event. Schultz ran a strong second and will start inside of row two on Sunday. Thompson settled for a third-place finish with Lyle fourth, Schmidt fifth and Bodenhamer sixth. Wille, Jake Richards, Steve Twenter, Aaron Marrant, David Wood, and Danny Barker completed the top twelve to secure spots for Sunday night. At the end of the night, it was reported that Aaron Marrant would sacrifice his starting spot to attempt to re-qualify. He has officially until 6:30 p.m. on Sunday to determine if he will indeed give up his starting spot in hopes of improving.
ULMA Late Models were a big part of the night’s action as well, with 15 competitors on hand for two heat races and a main event. While the modifieds and street stocks were not racing for championship track points this weekend, the ULMA drivers were fighting hard for top finishes as the battle for the CMS late model crown really began to heat up. Drivers earning heat race victories were Jon Binning and Shawn Rayfield. Once the heat races were completed, official scorer Karen Darling relayed the word to line-up man Walt Farwell to call the cars to the line for the 20-lap main event. Binning earned the pole for the race with Bodenhamer starting to his outside. Binning quickly established that he was on a mission by leading a large majority of the race with fourteen straight laps of nail-biting action before a caution flag flew over the field. James McMillin raced his new late model but he was unable to complete the race as was Steve Clancy, Jimmy Jobe, and Jason Sivils. Alan Westling and Bob Test had a scary moment on the backstretch late in the race with both drivers unable to finish the event. Once the final green flag laps took place, it was Brett Wood of Warrensburg who had the high line figured out to grab the lead from Binning who ran the low line. Bodenhamer was up in the mix for a while but slipped a couple spots in the closing laps. Wood went on to record his first-ever win at CMS in his hometown. Binning held on for second with Fulton, Missouri driver Trace Westling recording his best-ever CMS finish in third. Rayfield ran a strong fourth with Bodenhamer fifth and Chad Clancy, a rookie this season recording a nice top six finish.
B-modified drivers were also gunning for track championship points on Saturday night and it showed in the competitive nature of the drivers battling for the win. An up-and-coming, and promising group of b-mod drivers have stamped their mark on the track over the last couple of years as the youth movement in this class sends a loud and clear message to the modified and late model drivers in this area that they will be on their heels in the coming years, once they move on to other competitive classes. Three big heat races were held to secure the starting lineup with drivers here taking the victories. Billy Bentley, Jacob Ebert, and Brad Smith took the heat race victories with Smith earning the pole position for the feature event. Smith led the opening two laps but then unexpectedly pulled off the track during an early caution as his night came to an end with problems on the front of his car. This left Bentley and a hammer-down Ebert to battle up at the front of the field. Bronson Combs ran inside the top five early as Aaron Marrant, substitute driving in the #44 b-mod also made his way towards the front of the field. A hard crash with Trent Deadmon, Jason Billups, and Dillon Rowland slowed the field on lap nine with Ebert still in control. Marrant made his way to second, where he searched for a way to catch Ebert around the tacky track. Bentley held strong inside the top five with Ethan and Lucas Isaacs also in the mix. In the end, point leader Ebert held on for his third win of the season with Marrant coming home second. Nic Bennett, Ethan Issacs, and Bentley rounded out the top five. The official b-modified feature finish is pending further review.
The action at Central Missouri Speedway continues on Sunday night when the modifieds will highlight the evening with the track’s first modified special event of the year, which pays a whopping $3,000 to the winner! Participating drivers will compete in another complete racing program to try and secure starting spots for the 40-lap event. The outside row starting positions will be up for grabs through heat races, the b-main and another scramble event, with the top twelve taking the outside row starting positions for the big race. The Midwest Lightning Sprints (MLS), formerly known as MOLS will make their first-ever CMS appearance of the year and for the first time since 2005, the 305 Sprint Cars will race at the speedway!
Normal start times apply Sunday evening with pit gates opening at 4:30, admission gates at 5, hot laps begin at 7 and racing gets underway at 7:30. Admission prices are $20 for adults, $15 for senior citizens 65+ and active duty military w/I.D., kids ages 6 to 12 are just $5, with children five and under free! All Sunday night pit passes are $30. There is no track registration fee for Modifieds, MLS Sprints, or 305 Sprints throughout the weekend. Entry fee for modified drivers is $100 if drivers have competed at least twice in a modified at CMS prior to this event and $150 for drivers who do not meet these criteria. Same night entries are available and always welcome in all divisions throughout the weekend.
Central Missouri Speedway will have donation boxes on both sides of the speedway Sunday evening to collect for victims of the recent Missouri storms. “Operation Race Recovery” at CMS will assist in the collection of NEW toiletry items such as tooth brushes, tooth paste, bathroom tissue, feminine hygiene products, combs, brushes, razors, hand sanitizer, and hand-wipes, shaving items for men and women, deodorant, soap, shampoo, wash cloths, towels, socks, and underwear for all ages. New and used clothing that is in GOOD CONDITION as well as NEW or LIKE NEW smaller to medium-sized stuffed animals for children will also be accepted.
CMS is located just 4 miles north of Warrensburg off highway 13, or, from I-70, take the Higginsville exit and turn south on Hwy 13 for 12.5 miles, the track is on the east side of the highway.
