DIRTcarCONCORD, NC – June 3, 2011 – Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill. (Late Models) and Randle Sweeney of Clifty, Ky. (UMP Modifieds) extended their leads in the DIRTcar UMP national points standings after Week 18 of the circuit’s 2011 season.

Unzicker, 28, pushed his DIRTcar Late Model points edge into triple digits for events run through May 29, building a 104-point lead (1,075-971) over Brandon Thirlby of Traverse City, Mich. The talented young driver seeking a career-first DIRTcar UMP national crown booked finishes of second in a Northern All-Stars Late Model Series event on May 27 at Lincoln (Ill.) Speedway and 13th in the Bud 50 on May 29 at Tri-City Speedway in Pontoon Beach, Ill.

Unzicker also finished third on May 30 in a Memorial Day NALMS special at Macon (Ill.) Speedway and last night (June 2) placed 10th in a Tri-State Challenge race at Highland (Ill.) Speedway, but those events will be reflected in next week’s points totals. He currently has 17 counted races toward the national title, which will be determined using drivers’ best 35 finishes/points nights.

Thirlby, meanwhile, scored his first DIRTcar UMP-sanctioned feature win of the season on May 29 at Cherry Raceway in Fife Lake, Mich. The triumph helped him erase the disappointment of a 19th-place finish on May 27 at Mt. Pleasant (Mich.) Speedway.

Sweeney lengthened his advantage in the UMP Modified national standings after registering Memorial Day weekend finishes of 13th on May 28 at Cedar Ridge Speedway in Morgantown, Ky., and fourth on May 29 at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind. His nine-point lead over Jeff Mathews of Seffner, Fla., after Week 17 grew to 37 markers (1,044-1,007) for races completed through May 29.

Mathews lost ground in the standings but was perfect over the holiday weekend, winning his lone start on May 28 at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, Fla. It was his 10th victory of the 2011 season.

There were changes at the top of the national standings in two of DIRTcar UMP’s six support divisions, with Kentucky’s Jeff Lawson taking over the Limited Modified points lead and Rob Sternberg of Muskegon, Mich., assuming command of the Factory Stock points battle.

Drivers remaining atop the national standings in their respective divisions were Clayton Miller of Elkton, Ky. (Pro Late Models); Troy Clark of North Vernon, Ind. (Sportsman); Nate Zimmer of Mattoon, Ill. (Stock Cars); and Bradley McGhee of Hopkinsville, Ky (Sport Compacts).
