USMTS - United States Modified Touring SeriesBRANDON, S.D. (June 7) – The USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour powered by Swan Energy kicked off twelve straight days of racing Tuesday at the Huset’s Speedway and ended the night with a nail-biter that saw Kelly Shryock in victory lane for third time at the high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval in Brandon, S.D.

Scott Ward earned the AFCO Pole Award during heat race qualifying, redrew the pole position for the 40-lap WIX Filters “A” Main, and then beat Shryock to the flagstand to lead the first lap.

Ward, whose lone USMTS triumph came four years ago at his hometown Casino Speedway in Watertown, S.D., set a blistering pace before the first of two cautions came out on lap 9 when Ryan Ruter spun while trying to get around Shryock for second.

On the restart, Ward again held Shryock at bay and continued to lead through lap 31 when a flat tire on Ruter’s machine slowed the action again.

Using the high side of the racetrack, 11th-starting Colt Mather bolted to the front on the restart while Shryock followed suit and moved around Ward two laps later.

Diving back to the low side of the steep banking, Shryock pulled alongside Mather as the pair streaked beneath the white flag. One lap later, Shryock beat Mather to the finish line by a nose to record his fourth win of the 2011 campaign and first at the Huset’s Speedway since back-to-back wins in 2006 and 2007.

While Shryock pocketed $2,000 for his efforts, Mather settled for the runner-up paycheck ahead of Ryan Gustin, Ward and Rodney Sanders. Jason Grimes, Mike Steensma, Brandon Beckendorf, Al Hejna and Mike Gregg rounded out the top ten finishers.

With his third top five finish in three events in the Farm Boy BBQ Sauce Great Plains Region, Shryock gained control of the points standings while Jon Tesch dropped to second in the rankings after dropping out of Tuesday night’s feature race with just four laps remaining. Mather is third, followed by Ruter, Gustin, Grimes, Zack VanderBeek, Jason Krohn, Chase Junghans and Ward.

Five more events in the Farm Boy BBQ Sauce Great Plains Region are on tap as the rugged USMTS road warriors continue their grueling stretch of 17 races over the course of 19 days during Summer Speedweeks with a return to the Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo, N.D., on Wednesday.

The Red River Valley Speedway is a newly-configured 3/8-mile high-banked clay oval located off of I-94 at Exit 343, then 0.7 mile east on US 10 (at the Red River Valley Fairgrounds). For more information, call 701-238-9701 or 701-282-2200 on race day. The track’s website is at www.redrivervalleyspeedway.com.
