(Warrensburg, MO) – Much to the dismay of race fans, Earl Walls talked about his announcement that CMS will close at the end of the race season on Saturday night. Despite the somewhat sour start of the evening, 61 drivers and numerous fans turned out to show support for Earl and Susan Walls on RSC Equipment Rental Race Night at the ‘Fastest High Banked Clay Oval in the Midwest.’ Drivers were determined to put on a good show for the loyal race fans at Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) with numerous threatening storms lighting up the skies.
Each feature produced close racing action on the CMS tacky race surface with three repeat winners and one somewhat new winner visiting Waterloo Storage Products Victory Lane. In the modified division, Dustin Boney from Kansas City took the checkers for his second feature win of the weekend; James McMillin from Warrensburg triumphed in the ULMA late models for his first feature victory. Jimmy Morris from Blue Springs took his third feature victory in the street stocks and Jacob Ebert from Oak Grove grabs his sixth win in the b-modifieds.
The determined field of 23 local modified drivers highlighted the Beebe Heating & Cooling, Seeburg Mufflers, Cornerstone Agency, and Dale’s Towing Modifieds with three challenging heats on a warm and humid evening. The four heat winners included Dustin Boney in heat number one and Jason Thompson from Concordia with the checkered flag in heat two. In heat three, Dean Wille from Warrensburg claimed the checkers walking away with his first heat win this year.
22 drivers started the 25-lap feature event amid a lightning show circling the track with Thompson grabbing the early lead on the high-side with Boney challenging down low. After an early race re-start, Boney and Thompson put on a show with Boney sliding up into turn four and Thompson diving low to swap the lead back and forth. Some additional race cautions for flat tires and mechanical problems caused David Wood, Rick Beebe, Richard Layne, Justin Johnson and others to depart the track early on in the feature. Boney eventually gained the lead with some smooth driving and held off the front runners for the remainder of the race to take his fourth CMS feature win. Thompson hung on for second after some challenges from Terry Schultz finishing in third. Mickey Burrell from Fair Groove, Missouri worked his way back up into a fourth-place finish from a 15th place starting spot. David Barker from Kingsville, back out at CMS for the first time this year, grabbed a solid fifth place while Ron Keith looked tough in the sixth spot.
ULMA Late Models had 9 drivers for two heats sponsored by Rod End Supply, Bodee’s Race Bodies, B&D Transmission, All-American Auto. The two heat winners were Jason Bodenhamer and Brett Wood and the Brothers-in-law battled early on in the feature event with Wood in the top spot until James McMillin drove his machine into the lead with a rock-solid move on the high-side. Kevin Coyne almost had a disaster early on in the evening when his trip to the track was halted when his hauler and truck were stuck on a Johnson County road in an accident. On the track, his bad luck continued when he flew over turn one and fortunately landed on four wheels. He was able to continue the race and moved back up through the pack. McMillin had his late model dialed in and walked away with his first ULMA feature win this season with a superb race. Woods worked his way back up into second, Bodenhamer third, Lane Ehlert up into fourth after departing the racing surface early in the race. Bob Test came back with a good finish in fifth after working all afternoon at a local track to dial in the car and Coyne came back to a fortunate sixth-place finish.
The Eickleberry Concrete, Expressways Food Shop, Brooks Automotive Street Stocks raced their machines onto the track for three event heat qualifiers with 17 cars checked in for racing. The 17 year old driver from Warrensburg, Bryce McMillin took heat one. The sleek looking machine driven by Jimmy Morris grabbed heat two, and then Nate Barnes claimed the final heat. It looked like McMillin might have something for Morris early on, but Morris stepped out in front and really never looked back. McMillin later spun out in turn four relegating him to the tail of the field. Chad Eickleberry starting from the sixth position began to close the gap on Morris late in the race, but in the end, Morris took his third feature win. After some early season struggles with a new car, Eickleberry claimed second for his best finish this year. Jason Ryun from Kansas City looked good with a solid finish in third after battling with Eickleberry, point leader, Brian Ziegler finished fourth, Nate Barnes fifth and Michael Mullins sixth.
At the start of the CMS weekly feature racing action were the Brooks Automotive B-Modified drivers with two heat races for the 13 cars signed into the pits. Jacob Ebert took the checkered flag in heat one for his sixth heat win while Ethan Isaacs claimed heat two for his first heat win this season. The b-modified feature event started when Ebert led early on with Chris Brockway, back for the first time in quite a while in second using the high-side until he started to show smoke later in the race. He left the track with another engine problem, which has plagued him this year. Ebert meanwhile dominated again for his sixth feature victory lane triumph with Lucas Isaacs placing second after some early race challenges with Ebert. Bobby Raybourn had his best finish this season with a solid third, Nic Bennett once again emerged with a strong fourth-place just ahead of Jason Billups in fifth and Ethan Isaacs sixth.
