By Joshua Joiner – PEVELY, Mo. (July 2) – A month ago, Billy Moyer was so slow in a Northern Allstars Late Model Series event at I-55 Raceway that race winner Brandon Sheppard nearly lapped him. Saturday night the Hall of Famer from Batesville, Ark., returned with vengeance to the St. Louis-area racetrack and found sweet redemption in the form of a $10,000 victory in the 11th leg of the 25-race UMP DIRTcar Summernationals.

After swapping the lead multiple times with series points leader Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., early in the 40-lap race, Moyer took over the top spot for good on lap 14 and led the remaining distance on his way to recording the 79th Summernationals victory of his career and his first on the tour in 2011.

“We learned a lesson the last time we were here. We just made some wrong decisions last time based on what we did before,” said Moyer, who has been a dominant driver at I-55 throughout most of his career. “This place when you see that black coming it’s slick, slick out there. But it seems like there’s more bottom the last couple times we’ve been here than what there used to be a year or two ago. We had to get in our game book.”

The fourth-starting Moyer battled with polesitter Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill., and the fifth-starting Babb early in the race with each of the three drivers spending time at the front. Erb led the first four circuits before Babb took over on lap five. Moyer briefly took over the lead on lap nine, but Babb went back ahead the very next lap.

Moyer took advantage of a restart with 13 laps complete to move by Babb for good, diving to the inside of Babb when he struggled to get through turns one and two following the restart.

“That’s the joy of running behind a guy. I kinda felt like I knew where his weak spot was,” Moyer said of his move to get by Babb. “If you overrun that corner you couldn’t steer right there. I seen that happening to him before that start. I was just gonna try something there and it worked.”

Erb, a three-time Summernationals champion, faded to fourth midway through race, but battled back and moved by Babb and Matt Miller of Whitehouse, Ohio, late in the race to finish second and earn his first top five on the tour this season.

Miller and Babb battled side-by-side for third in the closing laps with Miller taking the position by less than a car length at the finish. Babb finished fourth, extending his lead in the points standings with his eighth top 10 on the tour this year. Austin Dillon of Welcome, N.C., finished fifth for his second top-five finish in three career series starts.

—————————————————————————

In the UMP DIRTcar Modified main event, Mike Harrison would take his fifth DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals victory. Tim Hancock took the lead at the drop of the green flag and led the early laps with Harrison right on his rear bumper. Matt Mevert then moved in to make it a three car battle. As all three worked the low side, Mevert would get under Harrison and take the second spot, forcing Harrison to a higher line. Harrison would then go all the way to the top and use the cushion to drive past both Mevert and Hancock for the top spot. Mevert would slip past Hancock and continue to fight with Harrison for the lead. Ken Schrader would move into position just past the half way point to battle with the leaders. As the laps were winding down, Harrison, Schrader and Mevert would have a great, often three wide battle for the lead. A late race caution with two laps to go would setup a final battle for the win. Harrison and Schrader would battle side by side as they took the white flag. Harrison would use the high side in turns one and two on the final circuit and get a good run down the back stretch to move just ahead of Schrader. Harrison would dive to the bottom in turns three and four to block Schrader’s final challenge. Harrison would take the win with Schrader second and Mevert finishing third. Ricky Horton would finish fourth with Brent Mullins rounding out the top five.

Jeff Herzog continued his dominating season in the UMP DIRTcar/AARA Sportsman division. Herzog, who is looking for his fourth consecutive track championship in the division, started in the eighth spot and worked his way to the front flawlessly to take over the lead on lap ten. Trey Harris would try to challenge him late for the win but would come up short and settle for the second spot. Steve Edgecombe would get the third spot with Troy Naeger and Jason Keller rounding out the top five.

Dayton Racer got his third UMP DIRTcar/AARA Pro 4 Stock feature win of the season. Racer led all ten laps, holding off Earl Pryor in the early laps, then Jacob Rexing and Aron Faulkner in the closing laps to earn the win. Dayton’s dad and grandfather also competed in the Pro 4 Stock division making it three generations all racing together. Faulkner would finish second with Mike McGinnitey taking third. Rexing would finish fourth and Ken Freeman fifth.
