This year’s version of the Triple Crown Shootout presented by Imhoff Construction of Jamestown, Missouri came down to the wire between two veteran racers and one Crawdad’s Classics Gourmet Hot Sauce newcomer last weekend as drivers raced for their share of the extra prize money and contingency awards for the annual event. After the final checkered flag flew, 2008 ULMA Champion Jason Bodenhamer came away with the Triple Crown title and $500 extra dollars and in doing so also assumed the lead in the overall ULMA championship point standings. Kevin Coyne finished second in the Triple Crown for $400 while Robbie Warner of Quincy, Illinois placed third for $300. Brett Wood picked up fourth for $200 while Steve Clancy finished fifth for an extra $100.

Speaking of Steve Clancy, the Odessa, Missouri driver drove to a convincing win in the highest-paying ULMA race of the year by competing at Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) during the track’s annual $1,500-to-Win late model special. Clancy held back a late surge by Coyne who rallied from an earlier spin to bring home the runner-up spot, just ahead of Bodenhamer in third. Kevin Kaiser had a superb run to come away fourth while former over all point’s leader Brett Wood completed the top five. Seventeen cars were on hand for the special event with 13 ULMA members present. Completing the top ten were James McMillin, non-member Lane Ehlert, Chad Clancy in a very strong and solid run in eighth place, and non-members Chris Lapp and Ron Binning, Father of ULMA regular Jon Binning, who drove all the way from Grand River, Iowa to compete. CMS returns to weekly action this Saturday night during the track’s annual Central Auto Racing Boosters (CARB) night at the races. Be sure to log onto the track’s official web site at www.centralmissourispeedway.net for complete details.

Lucas Oil Speedway hosted a special Thursday night addition of their weekly program, also part of the Triple Crown Shootout. Rylan Long came away with his association-leading fifth victory of the season by crossing the line ahead of a full field of competitors, including many ULMA-supporting travelers in town for the Triple Crown Event. There were 29 cars on hand for the evening’s action. Robby Warner led the first 18 laps of the race and appeared to be heading for the win until Long spoiled his fun with a late-race pass for the victory. Warner was able to hold on to second spot with the always consistent Tommy Cordray making his way up to the third spot. Larry Jones and Evan Hubert also came away with strong top-five runs. Chris Morelock, Bob Test, Kevin Coyne, Jason Bodenhamer, and Chris Hawkins completed the top ten. Of the 29 cars on hand, 25 of them were ULMA member drivers. The speedway is back to Saturday night this weekend with another edition of their weekly program, for complete details visit them on line at www.lucasoilspeedway.com.

Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Missouri also ran last Saturday evening, the first time in several weeks the track was able to compete. There were seven cars on hand for the evening with five member drivers representing ULMA. Jake Griffin, the young driver from the Quincy, Illinois area picked up his second win of the year at the track with Tommy Cordray, Justin Jennings, Danny Lorton, and Robby Warner among the top finishers of the night. Scotland County Speedway will be off this Saturday but the track will be racing this Thursday, July 7th during the annual county fair. This event will be a ULMA points-earning race! Night two of the Triple Crown Shootout took place last Friday night at Callaway Raceway in Fulton, Missouri with a strong field of competitors on hand seeking Triple Crown and association points for the night. Brett Wood claimed his second Callaway victory and third overall ULMA victory of the season in a hard-fought victory over Justin Russell, who scored a solid second place finish. Bodenhamer, Trace Westling and Coyne completed the top five. Other top finishers were Chris Hawkins, non-member Brandon Imhoff, Warner, Danny Monroe and James Stafford inside the top ten. Callaway again will compete this Friday night for another weekly race program. There were seventeen late model drivers on hand, fifteen of which were association member drivers. Visit the track’s website for schedule, start time, and admission information by logging onto www.callawayraceways.com.

The Shootout actually began last Thursday at Double X Speedway in California, Missouri with the first-ever ULMA appearance of drivers at the tiny track, which is noted for its sprint car racing. The audience was very receptive of the late models’ return to action at the track. ULMA is proud to represent late model racing at the speedway as the first association affiliated with late models to race at the speedway and would like to thank Kyle and Carol Wirts and their entire staff for their hospitality. There were 19 drivers checked in for racing with 16 members present for action. Non-members Brandon Imhoff and Jason Russell were the top two at the end of the night. Kevin Coyne kicked off his strong week of racing with a convincing third-place run, one rung ahead of Bodenhamer in fourth. Danny Monroe posted his first top five finish of the season in fifth with Alan Westling, Steve Clancy, Chris Hawkins, James Stafford, and James McMillin rounding out the top ten. Sixteen of 19 drivers on hand were ULMA members. There are plans in the works to bring the late models back to the speedway one more time before the season ends. Keep checking back to www.ulmaracing.com for any future announcements regarding a second appearance by ULMA at Double X Speedway!
