Grant Sharp Breaks Into Victory Lane at I-44 Speedway; Tyler Scott’s Winning Streak Ends

Lebanon-I-44-Speedway(LEBANON, Missouri . . . by Zack Morgan)   Saturday, July 23 was a great night of ASA stock car racing for the fans at Lebanon I-44 Speedway. While Tyler Scott’s winning streak in the Modifieds was stopped as Richland’s Jason Otto took home the checkers, young Grant Sharp took his first trip to Monster Energy Victory Lane this year in the Late Model classs, with veteran Kenny Dickenson coming home second and leaving the track with the championship points lead. Michel Deschenes, Toby Harden, Larry Hunter, and Dustin Reeves also visited Monster Energy Victory Lane in an action packed ‘Kickin’ Asphalt’ show that concluded by 10:10 pm.

In the feature division Late Model class, track points leader Chrissy Wallace started ‘tailback’ on the field, and would have a tough time making her way through the field. Conway’s Grant Sharp led the pack all night long as the 19-year-old driver showed the crowd how it’s done on the 3/8-mile, high banked asphalt oval. Camdenton’s Dickenson had a great run and finished second in the race and emerged the track points leader after Wallace finished a hard-fought 4th on the night.  Fair Grove campaigner Dale Roper, Jr. was third, while ‘Gentleman’ Jim Reeves of Strafford rounded out the top five.

The mighty Modifieds lived up to the pre-event hype, as ‘The Nixa Nightmare’ Tyler Scott was looking to make it six feature wins in a row. Fair Grove native Terry Taylor would grab the early lead, and it was all side by side racing behind him until lap 5 when Taylor and Stephen Counterman made contact, sending Taylor spinning and Peyton Lucas into the turn 4 wall. That would set up Jason Otto to take the lead, and he wouldn’t relinquish it for the rest of the way as he ended Scott’s streak and collected the $100 ‘Bounty’.  Scott would finish a disappointing fifth after cutting a right rear tire and struggling with handling as the air slowly left the hapless Hoosier tire.

OMSRA Outlaw Mini Stocks were on hand and, as usual, delighted the fans with close and competitive racing in their 12 lap dash. Joe Bunkers was the early leader, but lost a power plant coming out of turn 4. That paved the way for the Deschenes – Michael and Ashley of Lee Summit – to take their place at the front of the field, and they went for broke. Ashley rode the track’s top side in her potent Ford Pinto, with husband Michael on the low groove in his familiar yellow Saab. Micheal would get a great bite coming out of turn 4, and take yet another trip to Monster Energy Victory Lane.

Sportsman were next on the calling card, as last week’s winner Rick Sharp of Fair Grove ended the night early with mechanical problems in his #10 Chevrolet. That set the stage for Lebanon’s Aaron Douglas and Marshfield’s Toby Harden to do battle with Harden up top and Douglas down low. Harden would get the slight edge as the laps crept downward and would eventually win after Douglas took the lead but spun the car coming out of turn 2.

In the Road Warriors class, no one could contend with Camdenton’s Dustin Reeves, as he would take his third trip to Monster Energy Victory Lane in 2011. There was a very scary moment for Rogersville native Kristyn Scott, however, as she hit the turn 4 wall head on and totaled her car. She had some bruises, but walked away under her own power.

Wrapping the racing events up for the evening was the ever-popular four-cylinder subcompact Charger class. It was a great three-car battle from green to checkered, with Larry Hunter, Seth Jacobs, and Caston Jones all doing battle in the 12 lap Charger feature. Coming to the checkers it was almost too close to call, but Hunter took the victory by a front bumper, followed by Jacobs and Jones.

Next Saturday night’s ‘Kickin’ Asphalt’ show at Lebanon I-44 Speedway will include a special feature race for the Road Warriors, with $250 posted to win and a $100 bonus to the highest finishing dirt ‘pure stock’ car, plus a special on-track autograph session for fans during intermission.  All five ASA-sanctioned stock car racing classes will also be in action.  Additional information about I-44 Speedway’s 2011 racing schedule, racecar construction specifications and general rules may be found on the track’s official website, www.i44speedway.com.
