Gustin rebounds to win Friday’s feature, earns pole position for World Modified Dirt Track Championship finale Saturday

World Modified Dirt Track ChampionshipSPRING VALLEY, Minn. (July 29) – In the game of golf, Ryan Gustin’s performance at the Deer Creek Speedway on Thursday night would be the equivalent of a slice into the woods.

Thankfully for him, all drivers who entered this week’s World Modified Dirt Track Championship presented by Hanson Tire Service had the opportunity to purchase a “mulligan” just in case they needed a do-over.

Gustin used his mulligan Friday night and what he did was nothing short of knocking it stiff on the green with his ball winding up just a few feet away from the hole – a fitting result for the driver who has been regarded as the Tiger Woods of dirt Modified racing for the last two seasons.

After clocking the quickest time of the 81 competitors in group time trials, the 20-year-old from Marshalltown, Iowa, finished third in his heat race which put him in the 11th starting spot for Friday’s night’s “A” Main Qualifier.

But he didn’t stay there long.

By virtue of earning the most passing points during the six heat races, Chris Spieker earned the pole position for the 35-lap main event, but it was Bob Timm who grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag from the outside of the front row.

Spieker, who last won a USMTS feature in 2002, rebounded to snag the top spot away from Timm with a high-side pass on lap 7. With drivers throughout the field running multiple lines around the high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval, Spieker continued his charge until the momentum was slowed for a caution on lap 17.

With Timm still holding down the second spot and Louisiana long tow Shane Hebert sitting third, Gustin was now up to fourth.

But he didn’t stay there long.

The restart saw Spieker bring the field back to the green with a slow pace, which allowed Timm to get underneath of the leader at the flagstand and take the lead away in the first turn while Hebert and Gustin made it a three-wide affair as the lead pack exited turn 2.

Gustin dove under Hebert in the next corner, and then powered off of the fourth turn to beat Timm to the line by a car-length and lead lap 18.

Meanwhile, Brad Waits was making some noise of his own. Although he returned to the cockpit of a Modified just one week ago after a two-year hiatus, Waits didn’t miss a beat and he took over second place two laps later after starting 19th in the 30-car field.

But nobody, including Waits, was on their game like ‘The Reaper’ was tonight. Gustin set sail and raced out to a half-straight-away advantage before eventually crossing beneath the checkered flags with a 2.720-second cushion over Waits.

Hebert secured the third spot while Tommy Weder Jr. finished fourth and Steven Whiteaker Jr. rounded out the top 5 finishers. Sixth was Bumper Jones, seventh went to Les Duellman, Steve Wetzstein earned an eighth-place finish, Spieker held on to nab ninth and Keith Foss came from 22nd to take tenth.

“I’ll tell you what, winning this race against these drivers is pretty cool,” Gustin said in victory lane. “but it would be even cooler if we can do it again tomorrow.”

In addition to turning a 15.742-second lap in qualifying – the fastest of anybody during time trials over the last three days – Gustin also earned the most points of any driver during the trio of qualifying nights which gives him the pole position for Saturday’s $20,000-to-win World Modified Dirt Track Championship feature race.

But Gustin’s road to riches Saturday night is no “gimme.”

Waits will be starting on the outside of the front row tomorrow while Thursday night’s top points-getter, Dan Bohr, will take the green flag in the 50-lap contest from the middle of row 1.

Also garnering one of the first 18 starting spots in Saturday’s finale were Hebert, Weder, Whiteaker and Foss. They join Randy Timms, Colt Mather, Jack Sullivan, Jason Cummins, Terry Phillips, Jeremy Payne, Dustin Boney, Brandon Davis, Zack VanderBeek, Tommy Myer and Mike Steensma as the only drivers going to bed tonight knowing they are in the big show.

Several USMTS stars are still on the outside looking in, and will have to be at the top of their game in order to make it into the championship race. In fact, no past USMTS National Champion is in the show.

Tim Donlinger is in the best position to make it into the big dance as the 2008 USMTS National Champion will start on the outside of the front row of Saturday’s “B” Main where the top 12 finishers will advance. Defending USMTS National Champion Jason Hughes will start on the outside of row 4, USMTS National Champion Jason Krohn will begin his quest from the outside of the second row of the “C” Main and nine-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock has his work cut out for him as he starts on the outside of the eighth row in the “D” Main.

Saturday’s program will feature an “alphabet soup” of main events that will culminate with a 31-car starting field for the championship race that will feature an three-wide start eleven row deep for $20,000 to win and a minimum $1,500 to take the green flag.

The 31st starting spot will be auctioned off prior to the start of the race, with the lowest bid starting at $2,000. Of that amount, $1,500 goes to that driver for that finishing spot while all additional money raised during the auction will be spread out among the drivers finishing 10th through 30th.

The action starts tomorrow at 6 p.m. Adult grandstand tickets are $30 for Saturday’s championship finale while kids ages 12 and under get in the grandstands for just $10.

The Deer Creek Speedway sits on 60 acres of scenic rural rolling hills with one of America’s most popular state-of-the-art racing complexes and a busy modern campground. The 3/8-mile high-banked clay oval is located 11.3 miles south of I-90 (exit 209) on US 63 (0.7 mile north of SR 16) in Spring Valley, Minn.
