Deer Creek Speedway – Spring Valley, MN (July 30, 2011) – Brad Waits, from nearby Rochester, Minnesota, raced by early leader Dan Bohr on lap 20 and then held off several late race restart challenges from Ryan Gustin to claim the World Modified Dirt Track Championship presented by Hanson Tire Service.  Waits, who has numerous USMTS victories in his career, had stepped away from Modifieds to race a Late Model for the past couple of years.  “I wanted to have some fun,” commented Waits on his decision to get back into racing the open wheeled cars.  “A lot of people like to watch me drive a Modified, and there was no pressure, (I could) just have fun.”  After having the car for only about a month and in only his third start back in a Modified, Waits win was certainly fun.

Waits, who was driving a 2007 Skyrocket with an ASI powerplant, had no fancy graphics or sponsor decals in his all black #24.  But his driving was flashy and his car was fast, which led him to victory lane.  When asked about holding off USMTS star Gustin, Waits noted “The car started missing or something with about five to go but I was able to keep the car up on the bars to hold him off.”  The car had a cracked header but still had plenty of power to give Waits a three car length victory over Gustin at the checkered flag.

The race started with Friday’s winner Gustin on the pole of a three-wide start of 31 cars.  Bohr, who started in the middle of the front row, raced side-by-side with Gustin over the first 2 opening laps, while Waits rode the high groove and settled into third.  Bohr was able to ease ahead of Gustin on lap 3 as the racing action behind them was frantic.  The first victim of mechanical failure was Joey Jensen, who pulled off with a broken rear suspension after taking the green flag.  Joining Jensen in the pits early on was Clayton Wagamon andIowa’s Corey Dripps.

As Bohr opened a small lead, Waits pressured Gustin and took over the runner-up spot on lap 4.  The first caution flag flew on lap 8 and Missouri’s Mark Dotson slowed to a stop.  Bohr led, with Waits, Gustin, Tommy Weder, Jr. and Jack Sullivan running in the top 5.  On the restart, Bohr continued to lead, while Waits was glued to his rear bumper.  Weder tried to run the high groove after the restart but slid back a few spots.  A few laps later, Weder went back to the bottom groove and got back to 5thon lap 13.

After a caution on lap 14 for Tommy Myer, the field would be bunched up yet again for a double file restart.  30th starting Jason Hughes was one driver on a mission to get to the front of the field.  By lap 20, Hughes was running 14th, while Weder got by Gustin for second for a few laps.

Up front, Waits was pressuring Bohr to take over the top spot.  On lap 20, Waits made his move and got by Bohr to take over the lead.  Waits quickly began to open a several car length lead over Bohr, while Gustin was able to get back by Weder for third.  The third caution of the race flew on lap 28, wiping outWaits half straight lead over Bohr and Gustin.  Missouri’s Terry Phillips, who started 9th, had worked his way into 5th and teammate Jeremy Payne was running 10th with Hughes right behind him.

On the restart, Gustin moved by Bohr into second and a lap later Phillips took over third, shuffling Bohr back.  The restart helped Payne as he rocketed into 5th on lap 31, while Hughes cracked the top 10.  As Waits led, Gustin began to pressure him on lap 38, staying within a car length of the leader, while Phillips trailed by 10 car lengths.

On lap 39, Hughes had worked his way to 8th but a puff of smoke from the engine led to his car rolling to a stop, ending his charge and bringing out a caution.  A quick glance of the infield pits showed several cars who had pulled off, including Texas’ Steve Whitaker, Jr. who had been running in 7th but suffered over heating issues and was forced to retire.  Trailing Waits to the caution was Gustin, Phillips, Payne and Bohr.

As the final green flag flew in the air, Waits charged back to the front.  Waits was running a line where he entered turns 1 and 3 very low and allowed the car to slide up the racetrack where it would then rocket down the straights.  Gustin continued to chase and was rim-riding the high groove, staying within a couple car lengths of the lead.  Bohr was able to get back by Payne on the restart but on lap 45 Payne reclaimed the 4th spot.  A lap later, Bohr was then overtaken by 21st starting Tim Donlinger for the 5th spot.

Waits was able to hold off any late race challenges from Gustin or Phillips and sped to the waving checkered flag by 3 car lengths.  Gustin claimed 2nd followed by Phillips, Payne, Donlinger.

Notes:

Happy, Texas driver Rodney Sanders was the busiest driver on Saturday night as he won the 20 lap D Main event after starting 2nd.  That earned him  in the 25 lap C Main.  A 4th place finish in the C moved him to the 25 lap B Main.  A 10th place finish, after starting 22nd, in the B saw him start 28th in the A Main.  He ended his night in 12th place in the feature.  In all, he advanced a total 43 positions in the 120 laps he ran on the night.  There was no bonus paid for a hard charger but his drive on Saturday night was exciting to watch for the standing room crowd.

The World Modified Dirt Track Championships began on Wednesday night, with the first of three straight nights of preliminary racing.  The weather delayed action on Wednesday and Thursday, as rains pushed the start of racing back a couple of hours both nights.  The wet track provided for some close racing but as the sun shined on Friday, the track began to dry out just a bit.  Local racer Jason Cummins raced to an opening night victory on Wednesday night andOklahoma’s Randy Timms claimed the preliminary win on Thursday.  Friday night, Gustin set fast time of the night and went on to win the feature, earning him the pole position for Saturday.

Over the course of the week, 126 drivers took part of the inaugural event which was originally scheduled for early April.  The April date, which was postponed due to weather, had more than 150 drivers signed up to compete.  Over $135,000 was paid out to drivers who raced, including a minimum of $400 to any driver who started their race on Saturday.

Jason Krohn was the recipient of the 31st starting spot in the A Main after an auction was held for the final starting spot.  An anonymous person won the auction, paying $3,700 for the right to name the final starter and picked Krohn.  The money raised from the auction was distributed to the drivers finishing 11th through 31st in the feature, adding an additional $110 for each driver to start the race, including the $1,500 minimum for Krohn.
