(Warrensburg, MO) – Another hot and humid day in the ‘Burg meant one thing for drivers and fans…that Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) once again hosted another exciting night of racing. As temps again soared into the nineties, the racing was just as hot on the track as cars went air borne, battled three wide for position, and even playing some bumper tag on Heartland Waste night at the races. All total there were 81 drivers on hand in the modified, ULMA late model, street stock, and b-modified divisions. Earl Walls and his crew provided the drivers with a very competitive track for the night’s competition in 16 events (over 170 laps of racing) that began at 8:30 and were completed by just after 11 p.m. The staff also celebrated the marriage of long-time track flag man and 50/50 ticket sales person, Hershel and Johnna Thompson. The happy couple performed their nightly duties in full wedding attire as they shared the night with family and friends.

Modified heat race wins went to Chad Lyle, Curt Rackers, and Jim Moody with David Barker claiming the b-main event to set the starting lineup for the 25-lap main event. Moody looked strong in the opening laps of the main but his night ended when a flat tire put him on the trailer for the night, Rackers, who was also an early front runner also suffered mechanical woes that ended his bid for the win. Lyle quickly made his way to the front after a couple early race cautions regrouped the field with Tim Karrick and Jason Thompson making their way into the top three. Unfortunately for Karrick, his motor expired ending his bid for the win and another strong run. By the mid-point of the race, Lyle looked comfortable out front with Luke Feeback now making his way into the mix as he battled with Thompson, Dean Wille, and Tom Charles, who recovered from an early race spin to come back to the top five. When all was said and done, Lyle took home the win, his 57th CMS win since 1994. Feeback came from 7th in a brilliant drive to finish second, one spot ahead of Thompson in third, Dean Wille moved up from 11th to claim the fourth spot and Tom Charles brought his car home in 5th, up from his twelfth starting position. Point’s leader Terry Schultz finished in the sixth spot.

Sixteen ULMA late model drivers made their way to the track for two heat races with a returning Bob King taking the opening heat over Steve Clancy and Chris Hawkins. In heat two, Chad Clancy continued his strong runs to bring home the win over Kevin Coyne and Jon Binning. King, who had not raced since early in the season, earned the pole position for the main event with Chad Clancy to his outside. Steve Clancy was on a five-race win streak heading into the night but it was King shooting out to a big lead with the Clancy Brothers in hot pursuit. On lap seven, Jason Bodenhamer went too high in turns three and four and went over the embankment and brought out the caution for another restart. Cautions flew three more times before lap 11, when finally, the drivers were able to get into a race rhythm and finish out the 20-lap event. Bodenhamer quickly made his way back to the front and raced hard with a very strong running Bob Test and Chad Clancy for third, fourth and fifth. In what had been a terrible weekend so far Jon Binning, his night turned out a little better as a dedicated group of drivers and crew were able to help him return to the track, where he recorded a solid sixth-place finish. When the race concluded, King claimed his second feature win of the year in convincing form, ending Clancy’s string of wins. Behind Clancy in second were Bodenhamer rebounding to third, Test fourth, and Chad Clancy fifth.

Brian Ziegler is now the man on a streak of wins as he continues to try to secure his point’s championship in the CMS street stock division. Thirteen cars made their way to the track for heat races with Ziegler claiming heat one over Chad Eickleberry and Nate Barnes; Michael Mullins took heat two over Larry Ferris and Dean Wille. With great racing throughout the field for the 15-lap feature, Ziegler led the charge with Mullins, Ferris, and Eickleberry in hot pursuit. Dean Wille was also looking fast early on but when he and Ferris made contact Wille went spinning and had to regroup from the back of the field. The best battle throughout the race was between Nate Barnes, Ferris, and Eickleberry until late in the event when Eickleberry’s night came to a disappointing end with a flat tire. With Ziegler still in full control Mullins searched around for the right groove to make a pass but just could not make it happen as Ziegler sailed on to his sixth win of the year. Mullins claimed the second spot with Barnes moving into third by race end as Wille rebounded to fourth, Ferris in fifth, and Herb Dannar sixth.

The action class of the night was the b-modifieds as drivers continued to show up, likely getting ready for the 1,500 dollars to win race on Labor Day weekend. There were 24 drivers on hand for three heat races, which were claimed by Brad Smith, Ethan Isaacs, and Jacob Ebert, these three drivers are clearly the class of the field around here in b-modified racing. Earlier in b-modified b-main, newcomer Chris Giles of Independence had a High Fly ‘N moment when he got upside down right in front of the fans on the front straightaway. Although it was a rough and tumble ride, Giles was okay and later competed in the main event where he finished thirteenth. Chad Staus earned the pole for the main event by earning the most passing points for the night. Last week’s feature winner, Ethan Issacs, started to his outside with Ebert and Smith in row two. The race was intense from the drop of the green with high and low-side maneuvering by drivers throughout the field. Smith and Ebert searched around for a way to pass Ebert and even did a little bump-drafting with each other down the back stretch, which only seemed to inspire Isaacs to maintain his lead. On lap six, a very frightening crash occurred as Cody Brill’s car went up and over at least three times in the turn four area. Safety and emergency services personnel were quickly on hand at the scene where they found Brill frustrated but unhurt. Brill stated he just got a little too high on the track to lead to the incident. Once the race resumed, it was the same scenario with Smith and Ebert behind Isaacs, and that’s the way it finished with Isaacs taking his third victory of the year. Smith and Ebert finished second and third with Jason Billups having a very nice run to finish fourth; Chris Brockway ended his long string of bad luck by finishing in a solid 5th place after starting in tenth; Lucas Isaacs wound up sixth on the field, moving up from eleventh.

Championship racing continues next Saturday night with Army National Guard and Kid’s Night at the Races. Once again the best of the best in local modified, ULMA late models, street stocks, and b-modifieds will take to the high banks for a night of competition. CMS will return to regular start times next week with pit gates opening at 4:30, grandstands at 5, hot laps at 7, and racing at 7:30. A generous amount of donations from drivers, fans, staff, and local businesses will fill the “goodie bags,” which will be handed out to all kids twelve years old and younger in attendance. Boys and Girls in six age divisions will compete in foot races on the track during the intermission time break with the winners of the events going away with a prize for their efforts. There is also a chance for kids in attendance to win bicycles. Any last-minute donations may be dropped off at the track on Saturday, August 13th from 10 a.m. to Noon.

The annual Labor Day weekend of special events featuring a $1,500-to-win b-modified race and a $3,000-to-win modified race as well as the first-ever appearance of Grand National cars at the speedway is right around the corner.
