DIRTcarCONCORD, NC – April 20, 2012 – Scott Schmitt of Tonica, Ill., grabbed the lead in the Late Model standings while Devin Gilpin of Columbus, Ind., remained atop the UMP Modified rankings following Week 12 of the 2012 DIRTcar UMP national points battle.

Schmitt recorded a pair of modest finishes last weekend – 16th on April 13 at Farmer City (Ill.) Raceway and eighth on April 14 at LaSalle (Ill.) Speedway – but that was good enough to vault him from fifth to first in the DIRTcar UMP Late Model national standings. He holds a slim three-point edge (466-463) over Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., who slipped from the top spot after not entering a DIRTcar UMP-sanctioned event last weekend.

A feature winner this season at Belle-Clair Speedway in Belleville, Ill., Schmitt has nine counted races to his credit through April 15. The chase for the circuit’s $20,000 Late Model championship prize is determined using drivers’ best 35 finishes/points nights.

Dewayne Kiefer of St. Genevieve, Mo., advanced from sixth to third in the national Late Model standings on the strength of a victory on April 14 at Clarksville (Tenn.) Speedway. It was his third win of the young season, with each coming at a different track.

Gilpin, meanwhile, extended his lead in the national UMP Modified standings, building an advantage of 199 points (769-570) over Kyle Bronson of Brandon, Fla.

While Bronson did not run a sanctioned event last weekend, Gilpin pushed his total of counted races to 13 with a busy tripleheader. He scored triumphs on April 13 at Moler Raceway Park in Williamsburg, Ohio, and April 15 at Windy Hollow Speedway in Owensboro, Ky. – giving him six wins this season – and finished 12th on April 14 at Cedar Ridge Speedway in Morgantown, Ky.

Other divisional national points leaders through Week 12 are Evan Taylor of Woodlawn, Tenn. (Pro Late Models); Troy Clark of North Vernon, Ind. (Sportsman); 19-year-old Haley Westerfield of Owensboro, Ky., who grabbed the Limited Modified points lead as she bids to join New Mexico’s Christy Georges as a female champion in the division; Dustin Rollins of Princeton, Ky. (Stock Cars); Jake Hewitt of Troy, Ill. (Factory Stocks); and Blayne Ellis of Evansville, Ind. (Sport Compacts).
