Peoria Speedway(Peoria,IL) 42 of the finest UMP Modfieds in the Midwest were on hand at Peoria Speedway Saturday night for the “Mod 50”, but Colona driver Milo Veloz held off the star-studded field and won $2,000 in the process.

Michael Long started on the pole and got the jump on defending UMP National Champion Mike Harrison, who jumped to the high side of the track as Long hugged the bottom. Long, Veloz, and Bobby Allen all kept on the bottom and were running in order until the caution flew on lap 3. After the restart, Allen drove under Veloz in turn 2 for 2nd, but Veloz drove back by on lap 6 at the same spot in turn 2.

Up front, Long decided to try the high side of he track on lap 8, but pushed the car and Veloz scooted by in turn 4 on the next lap for the lead. A lap 10 caution slowed the action as Harrison had slid back to 6th as he continued to run the top of the Peoria high banks. Long began to fade, getting passed by Allen and then Butch Weisser after a lap 14 restart. Long’s night ended with a flat right rear tire on lap 23, bringing out a caution.

Harrison then began a memorable assault on the high side of the track on the restart, passing Billy Tuckwell and Allen Weisser on lap 28 on the same corner coming out of turn 2 for 4th. 3 laps later, Harrrison used the same move to pass both Butch Weisser and Allen to take 2nd, and began the chase of Veloz. Lapped traffic slowed Harrison as Veloz extended his lead, but it was erased with a lap 46 caution for Scott May.

Harrison thrilled the crowd as he teetered on the edge of disaster on the top of the track, but could never catch Veloz, who held off the hard charging Harrison for the win. Harrison ended up 2nd, with Butch Weisser, Donovan Lodge and Allen completing the top 5. “I was really surprised Long went to the top when he did”, said Veloz in victory lane. “He left the bottom open and I kept it down there and drove by him. The track was real smooth so I just kept trying to hit my lines and keep everyone behind me. I just started running this UMP stuff again so it feels great to get a win here at Peoria.”

In the Limited Late Model class, Glasford driver Evan Fink made a last minute decision pay off with a win in dominating fashion. Fink was headed to Highland for a Crate race, but hauler problems diverted the crew to Peoria. Fink, who started 4th, followed outside front row starter Brian Crebo at the start of the feature as the duo drove past pole sitter Carl Feger. Crebo slid off the bottom in turn 2 on lap 3 and Fink turned under Crebo. They raced side-by-side for the next 2 laps until Fink took over coming out of turn 4 on lap 5.

Fink cruised to victory, working lapped traffic masterfully after a caution slowed a half lap lead. “We raced hard with Brian there for the first few laps” said Fink. “We nearly touched a couple of times when we were side-by-side, but I found a little moisture there and got by him”. Steve Shannon got under Crebo on lap 14 and ended up 2nd. Crebo, John Gardner, Jr., and Tommy Duncan rounded out the top 5 Travis Johnson held off defending Track Champ John Farris in the Street Stock feature after passing Jeff Massey on lap 4 for the lead. “We changed spark plugs and I think that helped us in the feature”, said Johnson. “I just tried to keep it on the bottom and hold Farris off”. Farris ended up 2nd, followed by Massey, David Weaver III and Jim Bolen.

The UMP Hornet class provided another memorable feature as best friends and teammates Jerry Sally and Tyler Benson swapped the lead 3 times over the last 4 laps. Benson gave Sally a nudge going into turn 4 on the last lap, but couldn’t get Sally loose and had to settle for 2nd. “That was fun with Tyler back there”, said Sally. “Tyler and I are like brothers. He hit me on the last lap, but he knew that if he crashed us we both had to fix the cars.” Zack Bollinger finished 3rd, with Jonathon Shuck and William Nimrick completing the top 5.

Next week it’s round 1 of the “Budweiser UMP Super Late Model Series” at Peoria Speedway, paying $2,000 to-win. Limited Late Models, UMP Modifieds, Street Stocks, Illinois Lightning Sprints and Hornets will also be racing.
