Macon Speedway Thrills on Memorial Day

(Macon, IL) With NASCAR stars (and Macon Speedway co-owners) in attendance, Macon Speedway put on a terrific show to honor the heroes of our country with the annual Memorial Day race, Night of NASCAR Stars. The evening’s guests included track co-owners Kenny Wallace and Ken Schrader, along with NASCAR Nationwide driver Justin Allgaier.

Wallace and Allgaier won their heats and Schrader finished second to Wallace to start the night. In the $600-to-win Billingsley Towing Modified feature event, neither NASCAR star was able to reach for the checkered flag; they were bested by a Macon Speedway regular and three-time feature winner in Springfield’s Guy Taylor. Taylor, starting behind the pole-sitter, Mattoon’s Chad Evans, made the pass for the lead on the tenth lap. Taylor passed Schrader for the top spot and held it as both drivers zigged and zagged through the turns passing one another but Taylor found a grip and held strong for the finish.

Allgaier and Wallace raced along with Decatur’s Dave Crawley, Jr. for fourth early in the show but could not find their way to the front. Taylor won his third feature in-a-row at Macon, including his second $600 payout this weekend at the track. Schrader finished second. Brian Diveley, who started ninth, made an impressive rally during the course of the race to take third. Crawley, Jr. netted a fourth place finish and Wallace beat Allgaier for fifth.

Richie Hedrick of Urbana was the winner of the $2,000-to-win Late Model feature event. The 30-lap feature came down to the final lap, final turn and final inch as he narrowly won over Ryan Little and Steve Sheppard.

Little was in search of a sweep for the evening as he set the fast lap time at 10.747 among the 19 qualifiers. He won his heat race and was set on the pole for the A-Main feature. He led early before Hedrick would take charge of the race and hold for the next 15 laps. Steve Sheppard roared to the front taking advantage of the high groove and looked to be in position to win the race but was having difficulty through the turns and that allowed Hedrick to catch up and take back the lead and the win as they came to the start-finish line. Little also caught on and inched past Sheppard for second place. In the 67-year history of the speedway, it may have been the closest finish ever among three cars.

The Street Stock division was offered $300 for the first place prize Memorial Day and Steve Ewing made it two in-a-row and four on the season, using an open wheel “slide job” to take the lead from racing buddy Jeremy Nichols. The “slide job” is made famous during midget racing as the driver on the bottom groove slides to the top and takes control of the position, Nichols accomplished the feat earlier in the evening during a heat race. Ewing finished ahead of Nichols, Bobby Beiler, Terry Reed and Gene Reed.

Bruce Dulgar won his first Pro Hornet feature event for the first time since May 3, 2008, the year he last won the Hornet Track Championship. Jeremy Reed, who has won the first six features this season, fell to a broken car on the race’s third lap. Derek Peters took his second Amateur Hornet feature of 2012 in the eight-lap event.

Macon Speedway returns with a full show this Saturday Night on CAT Employee Appreciation Night. The gates open at 5pm; racing starts at 7pm.
