NOTE: (Schedule adjustment) The A.S.C.S. Warrior Region Winged Sprint cars have been added to the lineup this Sunday night at Double-X Speedway. This will be a sanctioned point event June 24, 2012.

Race night number seven of the 2012 season is in the books and again brought exciting racing action in four classes to the fans in attendance. With heavy rains in the area on Saturday night, the Double-X Speedway crew worked hard to bring a raceable surface to the competitors. While the track was different than any seen this year at Double X it proved to be racy and provided drivers an opportunity to run low or high depending on their preference.

Headlining the Father’s Day event were the Winged 360 Sprint Cars presented by XXtreme Glass. Cody Baker of Lone Jack put the Ted Hall #38 in the front at the drop of the green and like he was on cruise control in the early laps of the feature event. After a lap 6 restart, Baker again went to the point but Sedalia’s Jonathan Cornell was beginning to make his presence known. Cornell placed his sights on Baker and began to mount a challenge. After a lap 12 yellow, Cornell took the low line in turns three and four to pass Baker and moved to the front to secure the feature victory. Baker maintained the second position until mechanical woes ended his evening on lap 21. Following Cornell under the dual checkered flags of Andy Korte were Tyler Blank of California in second, Warrensburg’s Taylor Walton in third, Chad Ely coming all the way from Australia for a fourth place finish and Califonria’s Tyler Elliott in fifth. Picking up heat race victories were Baker and Walton. The top five in points heading into the night were Blank, Cornell, Gabe Maycock, Evan Martin and TJ Muths. After the night’s events the point leaders are Blank 635, Cornell 633, Walton 420, Elliott 401 and Maycock 393.

The special class added to the evenings card were the ULMA Late Models, making their first of two appearances at Double X this season. Ten Late Models checked in for the event with current ULMA point leader Jason Russell of Henley, MO claiming the victory in the feature event. Russell, a former weekly competitor at Double X in the Street Stock division, proved that he still remembered the way around the track as he led the feature event green to checkered. Russell withstood the challeneges of Fulton’s Joey Potter, who was able to close up to Russell but could not muster a pass to take the lead. Following Russell and Potter across the stripe were Columbia’s Brandon Imhoff, winner of both ULMA events last season at Double X, Kevin Coyne of Kingsville had a strong run to claim fourth and Trace Westling of Fulton rounded out the top five. Heat race victories were claimed by Imhoff and Russell. ULMA points and association information can be found at www.ulmaracing.com. ULMA will complete the final leg of their “Triple Crown Shootout” on July 1 at which time they will return to Double-X to compete for the championship title.

The Cooper Racing Street Stock produced some good racing also as veteran driver Dale Berry of Tuscumbia came home victorious in the feature event. Current point leader Derek Henson claimed second at the finish line over the apparent third place finisher Ray Smith. However, Smith was later disqualified for a rules violation in post race inspection. With the post race inspection complete, John Clancy Jr. of California was declared third, Jefferson City’s Curt Turpin came home fourth and Andrew Roark of Henley rounded out the top five. Heat races were claimed by Berry and Tipton’s Tim Cressley. Top five in points are Henson 508, Clancy 451, Keeth Stragte of Eldon 450, California’s Jim Keeran 400, Turpin 381.

Completing the Sunday evening card were the Double-X Hobby Stocks. Jeff Buford of Alma picked up victories in both the feature event and the division’s heat race. Sedalia’s Will Register was second, Rudy Wirts was third and AJ Wirts, both of Califoria, completed the field. Current point leaders are Register 560, R. Wirts 420, Buford 368, A. Wirts 314, Seth Jacobs 282.

Sunday night racing continues next Sunday night June 24 with the ASCS Warrior Region Winged Sprints. The WAR Wingless Sprint Cars will be on the tab as well for their third appearance of the season at Double-X. The Street Stocks and Hobby Stocks are also on the card for another exciting evening at the California, MO speed plant. Thanks to all of the drivers and crews for helping us keep the show moving as we completed the Sunday night program before 10 PM. Also thanks to the local boy scouts for presenting the colors for the evening and to Rex Martenson of California for singing the National Anthem.

Every week the gates open at 5PM, Hot Laps at 7PM Racing at 7:30PM. Be sure to mark your calendars for July 1 as the ULMA return for part of the Triple Crown Shoot Out. Also you don’t want to miss the 10th annual Clyde Wood Memorial Race on Sunday July 22. The ASCS Sprint Cars will be in attendance and are currently scheduled for a 30 lap main event. Lap sponsors have stepped up to the plate and the purse will be raised for the ASCS Sprint Cars as well. Commitments from ASCS competitors are coming in with Jack Dover and Brian Brown both planning on attending this event. There is a rain date of August 5 on the schedule should it be necessary.
