Last weekend in Lucas Cattle Company ULMA racing, Chris Lapp and Brett Wood drove to victory lane for the second time this season. Lapp’s victory came at Callaway Raceway from a close battle with ULMA point leader Jason Russell while Wood’s race to the checkered flag came in a caution-free battle at Valley Speedway.

Eleven recognized competitors made their way to Callaway Raceway last Friday for competition. During preliminary heat-race action, the Brothers Russell, Jason and Justin, kept their closest competitors behind them and each scored victories in the action leading up to the night’s main event. With the Russell’s on the front row, the field took the initial green flag as the main event got underway.

Jason Russell moved to the front of the field where he led the initial laps until a caution flag appeared on lap seven. On the restart, Justin Russell took command of the race from his older Brother and appeared to be a shoe-in for his first win of the season. Meanwhile, Lapp made his way into the mix by midway through the race to stay in the mix. Not long past the halfway point, Justin Russell’s car blew a radiator hose, which prevented him from claiming the win. Lapp took over the top spot after Justin Russell’s demise and never looked back to claim the win ahead of Jason Russell in second. Chris Cox, Todd McCoin, Darren Turner, Zeke Langley, Dave Miller and Justin Russell rounded out the top ten.

The track hosts another regular weekly program this Friday, August 3. According to a post on the track’s official website at www.callawayraceways.com, registration fees for the remainder of the year are just $15. Gates open at 5 p.m., hot laps begin at 7, with races starting at 7:30. Adult admission is $12, kids ages 7 to 12 are $5, with children 6 and under free. Pit passes are $25.00.

Twelve Lucas Cattle Company late model competitors raced at Valley Speedway last Friday evening during race #32 for the ULMA championship. During heat-race action, Brett Wood wasted no time in grabbing the lead from Mike Berger and Jimmy Jobe to claim victory in BuyRaceParts.com heat number one over Joe Walkenhorst and Jobe. For RodEndSupply.com heat number two, the field was stacked with a strong field of former track champions and main event winners. Kevin Coyne and Chris Hawkins started on the pole but it was two-time 2012 Valley Speedway winner Hawkins who went on to take the win. Bob King came from the third row to finish second with Coyne third.

By virtue of earning the most passing points, Wood and King made up the front row with Walkenhorst and Hawkins close behind. Track conditions were tacky in the heats as drivers faced the challenge of setting their cars up to match the surface; however, by the time the main event came around it was clear the track was multi-grooved and plenty fast. Wood wasted no time grabbing the lead as he left Hawkins, King, and Walkenhorst behind him as they battled for the runner-up position during the early laps.

As Wood continued to lead, Hawkins broke free from the runner-up battle to hunt down the leader. Hawkins made his way ever so closer to Wood during the mid stages of the race. By lap ten, Wood began to approach lapped cars. Meanwhile, Walkenhorst, King and now Binning and Coyne found themselves in a close battle within the top five. Ninth-starting Steve Clancy found a groove on the track as he made his way just outside the top five by lap 15. With the leaders in heavy lapped traffic late in the race, the fight for the win heated up as Hawkins began showing his nose to Wood at the front of the pack.

For several laps, the two waged a close battle for the win and on lap 18 nearly collided in turn three as they experience lapped cars also battling for position. Both drivers used their experienced skills to maneuver their way through the lapped cars. Lap 18 turned out to be the action lap of the race as the fast-paced event continued to unwind. Coyne’s engine expired while running inside the top five down the back straightaway moving Clancy and the rest of the field up one position in the finishing order.

At the end of the event, Wood held off a determined Hawkins for his second main event win of the year in a race that went green flag to checkered flag in a mere five minutes and sixteen seconds! Walkenhorst was steady throughout the event in third with Jon Binning fourth, Clancy fifth and King sixth. Ethan Young, Berger, Bob Cummings, Jobe, and Coyne rounded out the field. In victory lane, Wood stated, “the lapped traffic got a little hairy there at the end but we were able to hold ‘em off.”
