USMTS - United States Modified Touring SeriesTIPTON, Iowa (Aug. 3) – Stormy Scott kept the Tipton trophy in the family, leading the final 42 of 50 laps of the USMTS National Championship Series main event Friday night at the Cedar County Raceway to collect the $4,000 top prize.

His younger twin brother, Johnny Scott, won this event last year when the USMTS Modifieds made their debut at Al and Kathy Dlouhy’s high-banked 1/4-mile clay oval during the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup.

Local favorite Milo Veloz parlayed a heat race win into an outside front row starting position in the Swan Energy “A” Main, and led the first three laps of the race before polesitter Dereck Ramirez slid by to lead at the end of lap 4.

The reign up front wasn’t much longer for Ramirez as Stormy Scott, who started third, blasted into the top spot as they completed the ninth go-around.

Just like the first eight laps, the final 42 saw no caution flags and Stormy Scott never relinquished the lead once he got it. The win was his second of the season in USMTS National Championship Series action and his fifth overall in the Las Cruces, N.M., native’s rookie season.

Rodney Sanders finished second after clawing his way from 14th on the starting grid. ‘The Rocket’ has recorded 22 top-ten finishes in 25 starts, but has yet to notch a USMTS National Championship Series victory. He does, however, own four USMTS Casey’s Cup Series wins this season.

Ramirez held on for third in the main event with Brad Dierks finishing fourth to record his career-best USMTS result. Chris Brown was fifth.

Rounding out the top 10 at the finish line were Veloz, Zack VanderBeek, Terry Phillips, Richie Gustin and Real Racing Wheels “B” Main winner Ryan Gustin. Last year’s winner, Johnny Scott, was 11th.

On Thursday, Aug. 9, the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup begins at the Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Mo., for the first of four straight nights of racing action. Friday will find the tireless touring titans at the Humboldt Speedway in Humboldt, Kan., before returning to the state-of-the-art Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo., on Saturday. The weekend wraps up on Sunday at the Monett Speedway in Monett, Mo.
