The Lucas Cattle Company ULMA Late Models competed in races 39 and 40 over the weekend with two previous feature winners taking the wins. With just eight points-earning events remaining, Jason Russell is well in command of the championship standings; however, a fierce battle is taking shape among several drivers for positions near the top of the standings as the season concludes.

At Callaway Raceway last Friday, 18 drivers made their way to the track for the night’s competition, which turned out to be an up and down night for several drivers. When the final lap came around, Jason Russell raced his way to victory lane for the tenth time this season, just one win shy of tying the single-season win record of 11 by a ULMA member. Earlier in the race it appeared Jason’s younger Brother Justin might grab his first win of the year. However, the younger Russell was relegated to an eleventh place finish after a track decision removed him from the race lead.

Jason Russell’s latest win came down to the wire and certainly was not easy trip to victory lane by any means. In his strongest-ever performance, Zeke Langley appeared to be on his way to his first-ever feature win and led until the final moments of the race. However, Langley was edged out for the win at the line but did record his highest-ever finish in ULMA competition in second. Darren Turner and Ashlee Lancaster raced to top-five finishes while Joe Walkenhorst and Todd McCoin also represented ULMA among top ten drivers.

The track opens up for fans and drivers again this Friday for six exciting classes including ULMA Late Models, UMP Modifieds, B-modifieds, Sportsman, Hornets, and Jr. Hornets. Gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 7 and races at 7:30. Adult admission is $12, kids ages 7-12 are $5, and children six and under are free. Pit passes are $25. Registration fees have been reduced to just $15 for the remainder of the year. For questions and clarifications call Betty at 573-642-6580. Visit the track online at www.callawayraceways.com.

According to Ashley Berry, public relations for Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO, “last Saturday in ULMA competition, Tommy Cordray was able to hold his line and remain the leader for the checkers just ahead of Jason Russell from Henley, Missouri. Cordray appeared in Victory Lane earlier this spring and has recorded continual top five finishes all season long. Cordray dedicated his win to his family who joined him in Victory Lane. Jeremy Kelley from Walnut Grove, Missouri finished third with Kevin Coyne from Kingsville, Missouri, fourth and Joe Walkenhorst of Lee’s Summit, Missouri fifth. Rylan Long, Jason Bodenhamer, Jon Binning, Jake Williams, and Justin Russell rounded out the top ten in the finishing order.”

The track’s press release goes on to say, “this Saturday Night, August 25th, the Lucas Oil Speedway Weekly Racing Championship Series will crown four Track Champions. In addition to the final night of Weekly Championship racing, it is school spirit night. All Teachers, Staff and Students dressed in school attire, will be admitted FREE! Classes competing are the ALPS Food Stores ULMA Late Models, Pitts Homes A-Modifieds, Carson’s Corner Napa Factory Stocks and the DJ’s RV B-Modifieds.”

“In the ULMA Late Models Jeremy Kelley of Walnut Grove, Missouri is leading the point battle. Jason Russell sits behind Kelley by only 24 points. Just behind Russell is Saturday’s Feature Winner Tommy Cordray, who is only 38 points behind the leader. Joe Walkenhorst is fourth in the standings. This weekend’s race will not only determine a Track Champion, but may also play a big role in the final ULMA points.” For complete race night details and ticketing information visit www.lucasoilspeedway.com.

After a one-week break at Valley Speedway, drivers are looking forward to returning to the paper-clip quarter mile this Friday, August 24. This season’s late model competition has been close all season long at the track with two of the main events running straight through for 20 laps. Several other main events have featured just one caution period. Only two points-earning races remain at Valley Speedway. Looking at this year’s schedule, not that ULMA points end at Valley Speedway; there are limited opportunities for drivers to get a leg up on their peers in preparation for the dramatic conclusion to this year’s championship.
