Talladega Short Track(BRASSTOWN, NORTH CAROLINA) Ray Cook opened up his 2013 racing season on January 5-6 by entering both the Super Late Model and Crate Late Model portion of ‘Ice Bowl XXII’ at the Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, Alabama. In SLM action, Ray piloted Joe Denby’s #27 MasterSbilt racecar and posted the second quickest lap in his group during qualifying prior to winning his heat race. When the $6,000 to win A-Main rolled off on Sunday at TST, Ray started the 50-lapper from the outside of the front row. However, he guessed wrong on tires, fell back to fourth early, and eventually wound up seventh in the final rundown.

Behind the wheel of his familiar #53 in Crate Late Model competition, Ray laid down the fastest lap in his group during qualifying and later won his heat race in preliminary action. After starting fourth on the grid in the $3,000 to win feature event, the Brasstown, North Carolina native bolted to the lead early and led until a late flat right rear tire caused him to fade back to finish fourth behind only winner Riley Hickman, William Thomas, and Michael Asberry. Complete results from ‘Ice Bowl XXII’ can be obtained by clicking on www.talladegashorttrack.com.

Up next for the driver known as the “Tarheel Tiger” will be the Southern Regional Racing Series (SRRS) opener on Saturday, January 26 at the Boyd’s Speedway in Ringgold, Georgia. The annual ‘Cabin Fever 40’ will be sanctioned for the first time and will boast a $3,000 winner’s check. Ray won the ‘Cabin Fever 40’ back in 2009 and finished a strong runner-up in the 2011 version. Additional information can be found by accessing www.boydsspeedway.net.
