BARBERVILLE, FLA. – February 19, 2013 – It may have been a long winter, but Super DIRTcar Series stars Danny Johnson, of Rochester, N. Y., and Andy Bachetti, of Sheffield, Mass., are far from out of practice.

The two, along with a field of more than 35 Big Block Modifieds, returned to the clay after a three-month hiatus for hot laps today during UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment. Johnson rose to the top in the first timed practice session with a 17.928-second lap, but Bachetti outshone “the Doctor” in the next two sessions, making fast times with a 17.500-second lap in session two and an 18.371-second lap in session three.

“It wasn’t that long ago that we were in Charlotte. The time flies,” reflected Johnson, hoping the initial success in practice rounds is indicative of future success in the next four nights’ features. “My car was hot coming off the trailer, and that’s the way to have it, starting out fast.”

Johnson started fast last year too, taking victory in the first feature event, but falling short in the others.

After hauling two cars – the 34 and the 34B – south to race, Bachetti’s team used the hot laps as an opportunity to test the cars.

“Right now we’re trying to figure out which care we’re going to run with. We’re playing with two different ones,” said Bachetti, steered the 34B around the Volusia oval during the first practice session, quickly experiencing mechanical issues that slowed his pace. In the 34, he was able to charge ahead of the stout field to twice make the fast time.

“It feels real good to sit back behind the wheel of one of these cars,” Bachetti said. “We’ve had a cold streak here the past few years. We’re just pumped up to come down and hopefully get some good top-fives out of it.”

Three-time defending Super DIRTcar Series champion Matt Sheppard also performed strongly in hot lap sessions, placing second in time in the first session, seventh in session two, and sixth in session three. Last year’s season standout Brett Hearn stayed in the top five for all three sessions, placing fourth in session one, third in session two, and fifth in session three.

The Big Block Modifieds of the Super DIRTcar Series return to Volusia Speedway Park tomorrow, Wednesday, Feb. 20, sharing the spotlight with the DIRTcar UMP Late Models Swamp King Championship. The next three nights, Thursday, Feb. 21, through Saturday, Feb. 23, feature the Super DIRTcar Series and the World of Outlaws Late Models Series to round out UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment.
