USMTS - United States Modified Touring Series
KILLEEN, Texas (April 25) – The Lone Star State has been very good to Chris Brown, and it paid off again Thursday night with a $4,000 victory in the USMTS Modified debut at the Texas Thunder Speedway in Killeen, Texas.

Using lapped traffic to overtake Stormy Scott for the lead on lap 10, the 34-year-old from Spring, Texas, led the final 30 circuits to score his seventh career USMTS win—his fifth in his home state—and first since switching to a Hughes Racing Chassis last summer.

“I knew lapped traffic was going to come into play, but I didn’t think it would come into play that early to be honest with you,” Brown said in victory lane. “I thought it was going to be the whole race but things kind of worked out our way, so we’ll take it.”

Polesitter Tristan Dycus led the first lap before Scott powered into the lead from his second row starting slot. In just a few short laps, Brown was up to second and the leaders began to encounter lapped traffic.

Trying to maneuver around a back-marker, Scott was forced to back off the accelerator and that allowed Brown to chance to slip underneath and take the lead with 10 laps in the books. A caution flag one lap later opened up a clear track ahead for the runner-up in March’s King of America Modified Nationals event.

From that point on, Brown never relinquished the top spot and paced Scott to the finish line ahead of Zack VanderBeek, Kelly Shryock and younger twin Johnny Scott, who came from 14th on the starting grid.

“That’s one thing about Stormy, he’s always driven me clean,” Brown added. “I don’t think anybody would say he’s a dirty racer. He gave me an inch where I needed it and I need to remember that down the line.”

Dereck Ramirez finished sixth, Dycus held on for seventh, Jason Hughes came from 18th to grab eighth and Steve Whiteaker Jr. passed 15 competitors en route to a ninth-place result and the Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger Award. Daniel Hilsabeck rounded out the top 10.

The three-day 4s Motorsports Red River Rumble powered by Lecolift continues Friday night at the Kennedale Speedway Park in Kennedale, Texas, before concluding Saturday with a trip to the Southern Oklahoma Speedway in Ardmore, Okla.

Although Friday’s tilt at Kennedale will be the first for the USMTS, finding the track should be no problem for most teams as the facility is located just across the street from the now-dormant Cowtown Speedway.

Gates will swing open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 7.30 and racing at 8 p.m. Support classes include Street Stocks, Factory Stocks and Mod Lites.

The Kennedale Speedway Park is a semi-banked 1/4-mile dirt oval located 1.7 miles southeast of I-20 on Mansfield Hwy. (exit 442-A), 1.6 miles southwest on New Hope Rd., then 0.3 mile east on Hudson Village Creek Rd. For more information call 817-988-7433 or check out www.raceksp.com on the World Wide Web.

Saturday sees the series’ return to the Southern Oklahoma Speedway where gates open at 5 p.m., hot laps begin at 7 and the first green flag waves at 7:30. Limited Mods and Stock Cars will round out the racing program.

The Southern Oklahoma Speedway is a semi-banked 3/8-mile clay oval located  0.7 mile east of I-35 (exit 29) on US 70, then 1.8 miles south on US 77. For more information call 405-627-1766 or click www.southernoklahomaspeedway.com to visit the track’s official website.
