Comp Cams Super Dirt Series

Vivian, Louisiana (05/04/13) – The COMP Cams Super Dirt Series (CCSDS) Super Late Models invaded Ark-La-Tex Speedway on Saturday night for a $2,000-to-win event at the 1/4 mile, high-banked oval, which is known for producing great racing action.  Once again the track delivered incredible action as Wendell Wallace took the lead late in the event to score his first win of the season and sixteenth career CCSDS triumph.

It was a record-breaking night for the CCSDS as forty-four entries from six states crowded the pit area, which marked the largest car count ever for a standalone event for the series.  Tommy Surrett advanced from the seventh starting spot in his heat race to lock into the New Vision Graphics Pole Position for the 35 lap finale and was joined on the front row by Clarksdale, Mississippi’s Ross Camponovo.

Surrett broke to the lead at the onset of the feature with Camponovo, Wendell Wallace, Ronny Adams, and Jon Mitchell applying heavy pressure.  With Surrett at the point two and three wide racing reigned supreme throughout the field until the race slowed for its only caution on lap 8, when Timothy Culp spun his entry in turn one.  The caution, which fell in the series’ third point’s event of the season, marked the first yellow in a feature event in the 2013 season for the CCSDS.

As the race went back green Surrett held the point until Ross Camponovo shot past for the top spot near the event’s midway point.  Camponovo held onto the lead until lap 31, when it was Wendell Wallace, who took over the lead.  Wallace went on to lead the final four laps to record the victory as he became the third different winner in three events with the CCSDS.  Camponovo, Surrett, Ray Moore, and Billy Moyer rounded out the top five finishers.

The Larry Shaw Race Cars Hard Charger  bonus was claimed by Jack Sullivan for advancing from the fifteenth starting spot to a ninth place finish, while Drew Armstrong was awarded the Quarter Master Hard Luck Award after damage incurred from another competitor in heat race action resulted in heavy damage on his entry..

GRT Race Cars Heat Race #1 was won by veteran racer, Ronny Adams, with Jon Mitchell winning the NEA Super Gas Heat Race #2.  Allen Manufacturing Heat Race #3 was topped by Ray Moore, while BJ Robinson won Racing Head Service Heat Race #4, and Odie Green won COMP Cams Heat Race #5.

The triple Boston’s Sports Bar & Restaurants B-Mains were topped by Jack Sullivan, Gary Christian, and Brett Frazier.  CCSDS provisionals were awarded to Brandon Smith and Ashley Newman.

The COMP Cams Super Dirt Series will next be in action in late May, when it invades the historic, 1/2 mile oval at Thunderbird Speedway (Muskogee, Oklahoma) on May 31st for a $2,000-to-win program.  On Saturday, June 1st the tour then heads to Crawford County Speedway (Van Buren, Arkansas).  For more information on the events, please visit www.COMPDirt.com .
