USMTS - United States Modified Touring SeriesLANSING, Minn. (June 6) – With heat races in the books, the skies opened up above the Chateau Raceway on May 24 and forced United States Modified Touring Series officials to postpone the remainder of the 6th Annual Mike Guttormson Memorial presented by Tiny’s Body Shop to Friday night.

With the top 8 in heat race passing points already qualified, Friday night’s draw saw defending USRA Modified national champion Brandon Davis select the pole and then proceed to lead all 40 laps of the main event.

From the outside of the front row, Dereck Ramirez stayed close to Davis early on, and then Zack VanderBeek gave it a shot but neither were able to seriously challenge the driver from Medford, Minn., who will celebrate his 22nd birthday on Monday with his sixth career USMTS winner’s trophy.

It was also Davis’ second straight wire-to-wire victory after snagging the USMTS Casey’s Cup Series event at the Deer Creek Speedway on May 25. He’s led all 80 laps of the last two races.

Kelly Shryock used the top side of the racetrack to pass three cars in the final three laps and finish third behind VanderBeek. Ramirez held off Johnny Scott for fourth, with Stormy Scott, Joey Jensen, Tommy Myer, Mike Sorensen and Brad Waits completing the top 10.

The series heads to the Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, Iowa, on Friday night for another contest in the tough-as-nails Farm Boy BBQ Northern Region presented by Day Motor Sports. The Iron Man Challenge featuring USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods will round out the show.

The pit gate opens at: 4:30 p.m., grandstand opens at: 5:30, hot laps start at 6:50 and the first heat race hits the track at 7:30 p.m. Fans can pick up $2-off coupons at the Casey’s General Store located at 709 1st Ave. in Rock Rapids.

Then on Saturday, June 8, the haulers head back east on I-90 for the only appearance of the year at the Upper Iowa Speedway in Decorah, Iowa. Coupons good for $2 off adult grandstand admission are available at Casey’s General Stores locations in Decorah and Freeport.
