(Macon, IL) Macon Speedway is getting ready for one of its biggest nights in history this Thursday, June 13th when “The King” Richard Petty comes to visit along with co-owners of Macon Speedway Tony Stewart, Kenny Wallace and Ken Schrader. In addition to this historical night, The Midwest Big Ten UMP Late Model Series returns to Macon Speedway for the second time this season. This Thursday’s race will be a makeup for the rainout date on April 20.
The favorite to win the series was Steve Sheppard, Jr. with three out of four first place finishes in the series until June 2 at Jacksonville. Sheppard, Jr. had car trouble in his qualifying heat and sat out the rest of the night. That dropped him to fifth place, with Steve Lance, Jr. driving his way to the top in points. This Thursday, Sheppard, Jr. will try to regain his number one spot while also competing with the rest of the top five; Brian Dively, Matt Taylor, Greg Kimmons and Lance, Jr. for the top prize of $1,200.
Also racing that night for the $600 first place finish will be Billingsley Towing UMP Modifieds. Tony Stewart, Kenny Wallace and Ken Schrader will not only compete against each other in the division, but also against Macon’s own local modified drivers. Who wouldn’t want to say, “I beat Stewart, Wallace and Schrader!”? Jeff Graham and Danny Smith lead the division with Joe Strawkas, Eric Hamilton, and Guy Taylor rounding out the top five respectively. Don’t miss the wild action this Thursday with all of these drivers on the tight 1/5 mile oval.
UMP Street Stocks and UMP Sportsman will also be racing that night. Gene Reed leads the Street Stock division and Nick Macklin is on top in the Sportsman division.
In appreciation for our Street Stock division, any Street Stock driver who races on Thursday night will be given a free pit pass on Saturday night. This is a small gesture of our appreciation to the drivers who support the track by showing up each week to offer a great source of entertainment to everyone.
Grandstands open at 3pm with racing at 7pm.
Macon Speedway is located 9 miles south of Decatur, IL on US 51 then 1/2 mile west on Andrews Street, then South on Wiles.
