In what is shaping up to be a classic battle to the finish in Lucas Cattle Company ULMA competition, Jason Russell of Henley, Missouri and Vance Wilson of Quincy, Illinois, both continued their winning ways by claiming ULMA victories over the weekend as the second half of the season begins.

Both Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Missouri and Randolph County Raceway (RCR) in Moberly, Missouri held their race programs last Saturday evening with Russell claiming the win in Wheatland and Wilson going away with the victory at Moberly.

A total of 25 cars were on hand at Lucas Oil Speedway for the annual Homes for Our Troops fundraiser night. Drivers participated in the night’s festivities by honoring injured returning military members with a balloon release while on the starting grid just before the main event. All total, nearly $700 was raised for this outstanding organization, which assists returning injured military members with housing.

Last week’s main event winner, Payton Looney of Republic, Missouri, quickly raced his way back to victory lane by taking the opening heat race over Larry Jones and a hard-charging Lane Ehlert. Heat race two was a who’s who of former track champions as Jeremy Kelley of Walnut Grove crossed the stripe first over Tommy Cordray and Jason Russell. In the third and final heat, J.D. Hubert took the win ahead of seventh-starting Todd McCoin and R.D. Peterson. The heat race passing points results determined the starting grid for the 20-lap main event.

McCoin and Kelley led the large field of cars to the initial green flag but it wasn’t long before “Jason Russell took the lead from outside of the third row and outdueled upstart Payton Looney in a classic battle” to the finish in winning by less than a car length. “The pair sliced and diced their way to the checkered flag with Russell working the high line and Looney working the low side.” Kelley ran steady for a third-place finish while Ehlert brought his #42 across the line in fourth, for his best-ever speedway finish. Cordray crossed the line fifth, followed by Hubert, Jon Binning, Ethan Young, Kevin Coyne, and Larry Jones to round out the top ten.

Lucas Oil Speedway hosts a special event this coming Saturday, July 13; however, ULMA late models will return to action at the track on Saturday, July 20. Call the track at 417-282-5984 or log onto the website at www.lucasoilspeedway.com for a complete schedule of events and race night information.

Eleven drivers were on hand at Randolph County Raceway last week for a pair of heat races and 20-lap main event on the high-banked surface. Vance Wilson, who has a solid string of top performances over the last eight races, started his night off strong by claiming heat one ahead of Larry Winn and Chris Lapp. Jon Melloway of Hallsville, Missouri showed the way to the checkered flag in the second qualifying heat ahead of former main event winner Kenny Mudd and Sturgeon, Missouri driver Ashlee Lancaster.

Wilson and Melloway led the field of cars to the start of the main event with Winn and Mudd in tow. However, as he’s done many times this season, Wilson quickly shot out to the lead and leaving the rest of the field to sort things out for second. The race laps quickly ticked off as the drivers settled into a solid race rhythm, allowing the race to go caution-free for the entire 20 lap distance for the second straight time at RCR.

By race end, Wilson had claimed his fifth main event of the year, lapping all the way up to the fourth-place car. Behind Wilson, Larry Winn registered his best-ever Lucas Cattle Company ULMA a-main finish by coming away in second position with Mudd close behind in third. Melloway finished fourth, followed by Zeke Langley, Lancaster, Cliff Powell, Steve Dieckmann, Chris Lapp, Dave Miller and Bridget Clifford to round out the field.

Racing at RCR resumes again this Saturday with all regular weekly classes including ULMA late models back in action. Be sure to visit the track online by pointing your web browser to www.randolphcountyraceway.com or call 660-833-1727 for race status and additional information.

ULMA action returns to Double XX Speedway in California, Missouri, again on Sunday, July 14 during a special night billed as Race for Riley Michelle Hudson, who was an avid late model fan at the speedway. The night’s activities feature an auction at intermission, Frisbee toss, and 50/50 drawing. This event marks the second and final appearance for ULMA at the beloved track this season. A total of $500 has been added to the purse for this event.

Also on the race card will be 360 Winged Sprint Cars, Hobby Stocks, and Street Stocks. Grandstand admission is just $12, Pit Passes are $25. Gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 7 and racing at 7:30. Visit www.xxspeedway.com, locate the track on Facebook, or call 573.796.4694 for additional details. Vance Wilson claimed the win a few weeks ago in ULMA’s first appearance at the track this season and will look to repeat that performance this Sunday in his quest to tighten the point’s battle with Jason Russell.

A late afternoon isolated thunder shower forced the cancellation of racing at Callaway Raceway in Fulton, Missouri last Friday evening. Racing continues this Friday, July 12 at the track for another weekly racing program. Track information is available by contacting track owner and promoter Betty Atterberry at (573) 220-1751. The track race status phone line is (573) 592-7795.

If one driver can walk away as the winner of all three races this weekend at Callaway Raceway in Fulton on Friday, Randolph County Raceway in Moberly on Saturday, and Double XX Speedway in California on Sunday, they will walk away with $300 in bonus money by claiming the Clean Sweep award.
