(Moberly, Mo) – Lucas Cattle Company ULMA drivers have just a handful of events left to earn valuable championship points for the season and this weekend’s racing presents two more of those chances. Action begins Friday at Callaway Raceway in Fulton, Missouri and continues on Sunday, at Randolph County Raceway (RCR) in Moberly, Missouri.

Last week’s on-track activities began at Callaway Raceway where 13 cars made their way to the track for competition in a pair of preliminary heat races. Jason Russell vaulted from his 6th starting position to claim the win over younger Brother Justin Russell and Dwight Niehoff who was making his return to late model racing. Hallsville, Missouri driver Larry Winn claimed the second and final heat race victory from the pole ahead of Jon Melloway and Payton Looney.

Wilson started in the back of the main event lineup after missing his heat race. He was able to race high and low and even broke a right rear shock just past the halfway point on his way to his latest victory of the year, his 11th of the season. Behind Wilson in the top five was Niehoff with a strong second-place showing, Melloway, Justin Russell, and Looney. Rounding out the top ten were Todd McCoin, Chris Lapp, Zeke Langley, Cliff Powell, and Winn.

Jason Russell appeared to be on his way to another top tier finish but contact with Ashlee Lancaster sent him spinning just after the white flag while Russell was trying to pass cars competing for position and on the verge of going a lap down. Lancaster was one of the cars in the mix when the contact occurred. It was the lone caution to stop the race, after which Jason Russell was “disqualified from the finishing order for speeding through the pits,” according to track owner and promoter, Betty Atterberry.

Callaway Raceway opens its gates once again this Friday, August 30. For more information contact track owner and race promoter Betty Atterberry at (573) 220-1751 or call track line at (573) 592-7795.

Eleven cars were on hand at Randolph County Raceway (RCR) in Moberly, Missouri on Saturday evening. Kenny Mudd led the field to the stripe in heat race number one ahead of multi-time feature winner Vance Wilson and rookie sensation Ryan Petersheim of Harrisburg, Missouri. Larry Winn captured heat two ahead of Chris Lapp and veteran Walt Imhoff of Jamestown, Missouri.

Mudd, who was in search of his second feature win of the year and first since mid-May at RCR, earned the pole position for the main event with Winn to his outside. From the onset it was all Mudd as he mastered the RCR high banks. Vance Wilson looked as though he might secure another top-three finish but in the blink of an eye his run when up in dramatic fashion belting smoke and flames to bring the race to a halt. Wilson was uninjured and track personnel were able to keep maintain the safety of everyone before the race resumed.

At the end of the distance, Mudd claimed his second win of the season in dominating fashion while Petersheim continued to impress with his runner-up finish. Imhoff recorded his best feature finish of the year with a third-place run followed by Jon Melloway and Chris Lapp. Rounding out the top 10 were Steve Dieckmann, Winn, Cliff Powell, Dave Miller, and Wilson.

RCR management shared the following information with ULMA to pass on regarding the action for Sunday, September 1. A total of 23 cars checked in for action at Lucas Oil Speedway last Saturday evening where Justin Russell claimed the opening heat race from 5th on the grid over Tommy Cordray and Payton Looney. Mike Montague claimed heat two ahead of Todd McCoin and Earl Roark while Jeremy Kelley secured the third heat race with a drive for the win ahead of J.D. Hubert and Ethan Young.

According to the post-race Lucas Oil Speedway press release, “Lebanon, Missouri’s Mike Montague cruised to his first [ULMA] Late Model win after overtaking J.D. Hubert early in the main event. Jason Russell was able to slip by Hubert as well to finish second while Hubert crossed the line in the third spot. Ethan Young rebounded from a heat race skirmish with the retaining wall to drive from his 10th starting spot to finish fourth at the end while youngster Looney settled for fifth.” Finishing sixth through tenth were Roark, pole-starting Justin Russell, followed by a pair of former champions, Cordray and Kelley, and Jon Binning.
