While Burgtorf, Griffaw, Savage, Dunker and Becerra Scored Feature Victories

Quincy, IL (Sunday, September 29, 2013) –  Sunday night brought the end to the 2013 season at the Quincy Raceways in Quincy, IL, as it was season championship night at the races. At the end of the night Denny Woodworth (UMP Late Models), Steven DeLonjay (UMP Modifieds), Abe Huls (IMCA Stock Cars), Tony Dunker (IMCA SportMods), and Austen Becerra (IMCA Sport Compacts) were all crowned champions for the 2013 season. While Mark Burgtorf (UMP Late Models), Rusty Griffaw (UMP Modifieds), Brandon Savage (IMCA Stock Cars), Tony Dunker (IMCA SportMods), and Austen Becerra (IMCA Sport Compacts) ended there night in victory lane.

The first feature up on the night was the 20 lap IMCA Stock Cars, with Abe Huls and Terry Houston on the front row. Huls would take advantage of his front row start to grab the lead on lap 1 over Houston and Jake Powers. Just as the action up front started to heat up, the first of two cautions appeared on lap 2. As a tire was clipped and pushed out onto the track in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Huls jumped back out front, with Houston working to hold back Powers. Houston’s run up front came to an end on lap 3, as he spun in turn 2 to bring out the caution. Huls once again moved out front on the restart, with Powers, Josh Smith and Brandon Savage, who started 5th, close behind. While Huls used the bottom of the speedway, Savage jumped to the top of the track to move up to challenge Huls for the top spot by lap 8. Savage was able to clear Huls for the lead on lap 10 and then held on over the final 10 laps to pick up his second win in a row and fourth overall at the track. Huls settled for 2nd which was good enough to be crowned the 2013 champion, Houston recovered from his lap 3 spin to come back up to finish in 3rd, Powers was 4th, with Jerry Jansen rounding out the top 5.

Up next was the 25 lap UMP Modified feature, with Steven DeLonjay and Rusty Griffaw making up the front row. Griffaw grabbed the lead on lap 1 over DeLonjay and Robbie Reed and then held it until the first caution on lap 2. John Dimmitt would spin his machine in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Griffaw jumped back out front, with DeLonjay close behind in second. The action up front was slowed for the second time, as Chris Spalding spun down the front stretch on lap 3 to bring out the yellow. Once again Griffaw moved out front on the restart and then started to pull away from the field, when the third caution of the event on lap 6 brought the field back to his back bumper. This time Jake Griffin, who was running 4th, spun in turn 1 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Griffaw jumped back out front, with DeLonjay and Reed battling it out for the second spot. Just as Griffaw started to pull away from the battle for second, the yellow light would come appear on lap 8. Shawn Deering, who started 15th and had worked his way to 10th, spun down the backstretch to bring out the caution. On the restart Shane Lewis spun into the guardrail off turn 2 to bring the yellow light back on. The following restart saw Spencer Havermale spin in turn 2 to bring the caution back out. A fourth attempt of the restart saw Griffaw move back out front, with DeLonjay and Reed going back to there battle for second. But just as the action up front started to heat up, the yellow light would come back on. Danny Lake would spin in turn 2 on lap 12 to bring out the caution. Griffaw once again grabbed the lead on the restart, with DeLonjay working to hold off Justin Reed, who started 8th, in the battle for second. The action up front was slowed two laps later, lap 14, when Dimmitt spun in turn 2 for his second solo caution to end his night. Once again Griffaw moved back out front, with Justin Reed over taking DeLonjay for second. But another caution one lap later, lap 15, would slow the field down. This time Havermale would spin in turn 4 for his second solo caution to end his night. On the restart Justin Reed got sideways going down the backstretch and collected the cars of Robbie Reed, Keith Pratt, Adam Birck, Griffin and Lake to bring out the red. Since the caution involved 5 or more cars, all cars able to continue would get there spots back. Once back to green Griffaw jumped back out front and then held on over the final 10 laps to pick up his second win of the season at the track. DeLonjay settled for 2nd which was enough to secure the 2013 track title, Robbie Reed was 3rd, Pratt was 4th, with Dylan Hoover coming from 11th to round out the top 5.

Scott Schmitt and Mark Burgtorf led the field to the green flag in the 30 lap Late Model feature, with Schmitt edging out Burgtorf at the line by inches to lead lap 1. Schmitt, who was glued to the bottom of the track, was able to hold off Burgtorf, who was working the top, until lap 3 when Burgtorf took over the top spot. Burgtorf wasn’t able to get away from Schmitt, as he stayed glued to Burgtorf’s back bumper even as they entered lap traffic by lap 12. But Burgtorf was able to hold off all challenges from Schmitt over the final 27 laps to claim his 3rd win of the season at the track. Schmitt settled for 2nd, Rickey Frankel came from 6th to finish in 3rd, Jason Perry was 4th, with Michael Long coming home in 5th. Denny Woodworth would cross the line in 6th, which was good enough to earn him the 2013 track title.

Up next was the 20 lap IMCA SportMod feature, with Tony Dunker and Charles VanZandt making up the front row for the event. Just as the green flag was waved the caution light would come on, as a tire was pushed out onto the track in turn 4. The following restart saw Dunker jump out into the lead on lap 1 over Bradley Holtmeyer and Jeff DeLonjay. The action up front was slowed on lap 2, as Nathan Anders spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. Dunker once again jumped out front on the restart, with Holtmeyer glued to his back bumper. Just as Dunker started to pull away, another caution appeared on lap 5. This time a tire was clipped and pushed out onto the track in turn 1 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Dunker moved back out front, with Holtmeyer working to hold back Trevor Hagerbaumer, who started 5th. But once again the action up front was slowed one lap later, lap 6, as Todd Reed slowed to a stop down the front stretch to bring out the yellow. Once again Dunker jumped back out front on the restart, with Holtmeyer now having Jim Gillenwater, who started 7th, battling him for the second spot. One lap later another caution would wave, as Skylar Stark spun in turn 4 on lap 7 to bring out the yellow. Dunker again moved out front on the restart, with Holtmeyer and Gillenwater glued to his back bumper. Another lap in the books meant another caution, as Jon Lear spun in turn 4 on lap 8 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Anders would spin his machine in turn 1 to bring the yellow light back on, and ending his night with his second solo caution. The following restart saw Lear spin in turn 1 for his second solo caution to end his night. A third attempt of a restart saw Dunker grab the lead, with Holtmeyer in second and Hagerbaumer over taking Gillenwater for third. Another lap complete, lap 9, produced the final caution of the event. This time Tanner Klingele spun in turn 4 with a left rear flat to bring out the yellow. Dunker moved back out front on the restart and the held on over the final 11 laps to pick up his 9th win in a row and 13th overall at the track. Dunker’s win more then secured his second consecutive track championship at the track. Holtmeyer held on for 2nd, Hagerbaumer was 3rd, Gillenwater was 4th, with Patrick “Skipp” Dunker getting his career best finish in the SportMods in 5th.

The final feature up on the night was the 12 lap IMCA Sport Compacts, with Austen Becerra and Kimberly Abbott leading the field to the green flag. Becerra would take advantage of his front row start to grab the lead on lap 1 by inches over Abbott and Patrick “Skipp” Dunker. Abbott wouldn’t give up easy, as she used the top of the track to edge out Becerra on lap 4 for the lead. Those two would run the next 4 laps side-by-side, with Becerra leading lap 6 and Abbott leading lap 8. But Becerra was able to grab the top spot for good on lap 9 and then held off a last lap challenge from Dunker to claim his 7th win in a row and 9th overall at the track. The win would also help Becerra wrap up his first career track championship. Dunker was 2nd, Abbott was 3rd, Brandon Lambert was 4th, with Seith Woodruff coming from 8th to round out the top 5.
