Tucson, Arizona (January 11, 2014) R.C. Whitwell has developed quite a love for Tucson International Raceway of late. The Tucson native has scored his home track’s last three big money Late Model shows. Whitwell’s third triumph was by far the most impressive to date by besting a very strong mixed field of national and regional touring stars. Whitwell scored the win ahead of National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame racer Billy Moyer of Batesville, Arkansas and Crane, Missouri’s Will Vaught. Whitwell’s win in the opening night of the six event Winter Extreme mini-series at TIR’s $3000 winning purse is also the largest payday of his three most recent wins.

A stellar 57 car field competed for the 24 starting spots available on night one of Winter Extreme. A very unique format is being used to set the fields and has resulted in some fantastic side by side racing. At the outset of the night, John Blankenship of Williamson, West Virginia topped all drivers on hand during hot lap time trials with a lap of 16.069 seconds for an average speed of 89.61 MPH around the 4/10ths of a mile Tucson oval.

Whitwell started from the pole position and made the winning move to the lead by Manhattan, Kansas driver Chase Junghans. Multi-time Arizona winner Moyer, who started fifth, moved up to second and chased Whitwell down in traffic. But the hometown hero would not be denied the $3000 victory. Will Vaught earned the ARP Race Products Hard Charger award after advancing ten positions from his 13th starting spot.

“I have been coming to this race for a while now and it feels good to finally get a win, especially on the first night. This car is still new to me; I’ve only driven it three times. But I’ve won all three races. So it seems like every time I change something or try something new it works out pretty good. It’s the biggest win of my career as far as prestige. There some pretty tough guys here compared to other races I’ve won. We will come back the rest of the week and try to get some more money.” Whitwell said in the Freedom RV Victory Lane.
