Tri-State Speedway     Haubstadt, IN – May 10, 2014 –  The World of Outlaws STP Sprint Cars raced at Tri-State Speedway Saturday night in an event that was highlighted by a “Salute to the King.”  Twenty time World of Outlaw Champion Steve Kinser, who is competing in his last season as a full time driver on the tour, was recognized in pre-race ceremonies.

Dewig Meats sponsored the annual event and took part in the presentation along with track operator Tom Helfrich.

Tennessee driver Paul McMahan won the 40 lap feature.  He lead the final 31 laps to collect the $10,000 top prize.  The event started with veterans Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell on the front row.

Kinser had won the 8 car, 8 lap dash to claim the pole.  McMahan, who had set fast time with a lap of 12.183 seconds, would start 4th in the field of 24 winged sprinters.

Swindell would lead the first nine laps before spinning backwards into turn one after contacting a car that he was about to lap.  In the process he also collected Joey Saldana who was forced to the outside in an effort to avoid the spinning car.  Saldana’s crew completed repairs in the work area but Swindell’s car failed to reappear for the restart.

Paul McMahan took advantage of the double file restart to grab the lead.  The victory  would become his second WoO win of the current season.  “I love this place.  Even though it is my first win here, I’m not sure that I ever ran out of the top five here.”  Steve Kinser would continue in the chase but would finish second.  “I did all I could do.  I ran the middle and killed my tires!” Kerry Madsen ran third in what he described as “an excellent run for us.”  David Gravel was fourth.  Joey Saldana climbed back through the field to finish fifth.  The top five finish was good enough to preserve Saldana’s WoO  points lead while McMahan‘s win moved him up to second in driver points.

Donny Shatz was announced as the Hard Charger for the race.  He started 22nd and finished sixth in the feature.  Brady Bacon, Brad Sweet, Kraig Kinser, and Jason Sides rounded out the top ten.  Some of the closest racing was in the packs of cars running from third on back into the field.  Critter Malone was one of the unheralded drivers who was in the thick of the action.  He had moved up to fifth place after starting 21st before becoming a victim of a late race scramble that cost him 8 spots as several drivers  attempted to gain positions in the limited space of turn two.

The three heat races were won by David Gravel, Daryn Pittman, and Joey Saldana.  Joey Moughan won the last chance race.  Twenty-six drivers had signed in.  Kody Kinser had the misfortune to flip during the second heat race and was a scratch for the L.C.R.

KISSINGER BESTS UMP MODS

Levi Kissinger of Mt. Vernon, IN, won the 25 lap feature for the UMP Open Wheel Modified division.  Kissinger was one of 4 drivers who appeared to have the necessary speed to collect the win.  The race finally came down to a duel between Zach Fair and Kissinger.

Kissinger led the final two laps.  “ I knew he was good on the bottom.  I got underneath and got the bottom groove.  I know we both wanted to win!”  Fair had taken over the lead from Tyler Nicely when the bottom came in on lap six.  Mark LaMont was third and he had his modified close enough to be a continual factor.  Michael Fox finished fourth with Trent Young fifth.

The three heat races were won by Zach Fair, Tyler Nicely, and Stephen

Schnapf.   Schnapf was involved in the accident in turn one during

the feature that brought out the red flag.  Clay Lane’s car ended up on its roof and both cars were heavily damaged.

The next race at Tri-State Speedway will be held Sunday May 25th on Memorial Day Weekend.  The non-wing 410 sprints of MSCS and KISS will compete along with the UMP modifieds.  The sprint car feature will pay $2,500 to win.
