(Warrensburg, MO) Despite a few stray showers lingering in the local area, fans and drivers returned to Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) to watch exciting racing action for the weekly championship points feature events on Saturday evening. CMS featured the USRA Modifieds, Street Stocks, B-Modifieds, Pure Stocks, and guest class Midwest Lightning Sprints, for Better Country KIX 105.7 Radio Race Night.

Overall, 75 drivers registered for another week of CMS racing action on the smooth clay oval. The Midwest Lightning Sprints sponsored by Liquid and Powdercoat Finishes of Kansas City also made their first appearance at CMS in 2014 with 13 cars registered for competition.

The Pure Stock class is a new division for CMS this season to compete for the checkered flag. A few new drivers came to race this week to add some additional challenges for the regular weekly drivers. Jason Ryun from Kansas City grabbed his first heat win followed by Kansas City driver, Darrin Christy and Derek Lampe.

This appeared to be another feature win for Christy after he lead the entire race after passing Jason Ryun for the lead on the initial laps of the feature. Christy then dominated with a good battle ensuing for second and third with three-time winner Bobby Raybourn and Gary Akers battling it out. On the final turn of the race Christy spins out in turn four which gave Buckner driver, Gary Akers his first win of the year, Raybourn was a close second, Ryun third, Leroy Morrison fourth, and Christy ended up fifth.

Another strong field of 19 B-modified drivers checked in for the night’s action on Saturday. Eddie Bray Jr. from Archie, Jeff Douty out of Butler and Warrensburg driver, Dean Wille snatched the three heat wins looking strong up front.

The feature was another wildly competitive event with drivers attempting to place a new winner into victory lane; however, two time winner Dean Wille also tried to add to his feature win list. Douty was the early leader and looked to be the car to beat. Meanwhile Bray had his hands full with Jacob Ebert, Wille and Chad Stauss in the top five. Late in the race Wille stayed patient and finally moved down low past Douty into the lead for good. Wille stayed on a roll and captured his third feature win of the year with Douty close behind in second, Ebert looked strong in third, Stauss fourth and Bray in fifth.

The Midwest Lightning Sprints were fast on the clay oval this weekend with their first appearance at CMS this season. C.A.R.B. Hall of Fame driver, Bobby Layne and Kansas City, Missouri driver, Ken Billings crossed the line to capture the heat victories.

In the feature event Billings quickly shot out into the early lead and never looked back. Mike Trent made it interesting on the final laps when traffic came into play, but Billings hung on for his second win in a row, Trent second, with Layne third, Ryan Kent moved up into fourth with Zach Morehead in fifth.

The Street Stock class had a field of several drivers capable of netting a feature win with 15 cars in the pits. Adrian driver, Brian Ferguson and Clayton Campbell from Sedalia claimed the two heat race wins.

As the feature rolled into turn one Brett Wood once again shot to the front with Ferguson making it tough for him in second. On lap four, Jeremiah Wilson had a small fire in his engine and came to a stop in turn two finishing his night on the tow truck. Ferguson also spun down the front stretch and had to go tail back on the field trying to move back up into contention. Clayton Campbell took over the second spot with Bobby Raybourn battling him just behind in third.

When the double checkered flags flew, Wood claimed his fourth feature win of the year with Campbell second followed by Turley, who moved up late in the race with Raybourn fourth and Ferguson fighting back into the top five.

Twenty-one USRA modifieds were back at CMS after their big money Memorial Day weekend special the previous weekend. Drivers were looking to dethrone Jim Moody after he claimed the $3,000 crown last Monday evening.

The heat races were once again a show in itself with Odessa driver, Jim Moody, Jason Bodenhamer out of Centerview and Aaron Marrant from Orrick taking the checkers during the three contested heat races.

The 25-lap feature for $1,000 to win was another chance for a new driver to grab a feature victory. Gunner Martin looked strong early on and throughout the night as he jumped into the lead with Moody and Marrant hot on his tail. After several cautions, Marrant moved into second with Moody close in tow. Moody passed Marrant after a restart until late in the race when Martin almost spun and slowed in turn two, but not coming to a complete full stop. Moody and Marrant had no place to go and spun to avoid the slowing Martin and had to go back the tail of the field.

Schultz grabbed the second spot on the late restart and he immediately shot to the high side and moved passed Martin with just a few laps remaining. Schultz barely squeezed by into his second feature win of the year with Martin a very close second, Shad Badder third, Tim Karrick fourth and Tyler Schmidt, who fought back from an earlier yellow, finished fifth, Eddie Bray, Dean Wille , Moody, Marrant and Nick Pence completed the top ten.

Next weekend is Cliff Harris Warrensburg Ford/Chrylser Dealership Race Night.
