(Warrensburg, MO) Summer officially arrived and as expected the heat index and humidity levels sored through the roof on a hot June night of racing at Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) for Budweiser race night.
All total, 80 cars made their way to the speedway for competition, including 20 USRA Modifieds, 16 Street Stocks, 20 B-Modifieds, 5 Pure Stocks, and 19 guest class Mid-America Lightning Sprints.

The evening began with the Pure Stocks competing in one heat race. Bobby Raybourn shot out to an early race lead from his second-starting spot on the grid and went on to take his third heat victory over Darrin Christy and Gary Akers, who had a classic battle to the finish for second and third.

B-Modifieds made their way to the track next for three heat races. The opening heat was a four-car battle to the finish among Troy Carlyle, Mike Striegel, Richard Brainard, and Dallas White who crossed the line nose-to-tail in that order to finish the race. Heat two was another outstanding race to the line with Dean Wille edging out race-long leader Eddie Bray, Jr., Ryan Edde and Bobby Wood. For the final heat, Jason Billups beat a hard-charging Cody Frazon to the line by just a few feet over James Morris and veteran Ernie Walker of Sedalia.

Up next came the MALS Sprint Cars contesting three heat races. To start off the prelims for the MALS Sprints, veteran open-wheel racer Mike Trent claimed the win by a huge margin ahead of Tony Hudlin and Ken Billings. Veteran Bobby Lane wasted no time in overtaking his younger Nephew, Tony Lane on his way to a big win over the younger Lane and former CMS B-Modified driver A.J. Tice in heat two. The third and final heat race saw Mark Billings fly to the checkers over Dusty Murray and M.K. Billings to close out MALS heat-race action.

Street Stocks competed next in the lineup for a pair of exciting heat races. The heats just were close-quarters action in the Street Stock division as Allen Perryman of Belton bested a hard-charging Brett Wood to the line for the win with Marc Carter and James McMillin just behind. Heat race two saw Bryce McMillin take command halfway through to sail on to the victory over Troy Turley, Jay Lyle, and Donnie Tanner.

USRA Modifieds finished out the heat races with Eddie Bray, Jr., and Danny Scrogham in a close battle for the win in the opening heat as Bray took the win over Scrogham, Aaron Marrant, and Dalton Kirk. Justin Johnson spoiled the victory for race-long leader Kyle Westerhold to claim heat two, Westerhold finished second followed by Jason Bodenhamer and Tim Karrick. For the final heat race, Gunner Martin of Blue Springs, Missouri took command of the event and drove to the win over David Wood, Dean Wille, and Steve Twenter.

Pure Stocks returned to the track for their main event with perennial winner Bobby Raybourn holding command in the early stages of the event as former main-event winner Darrin Christy raced hard in second. Point’s leader Gary Akers held court in third through the first five laps. Raybourn was on cruise control at the front but Christy was ever looming. Akers had to leave the track for mechanical reasons by mid-race, which moved Don Johnson into third followed by Leroy Morrison. As the laps clicked off, Christy moved to within two car lengths but Raybourn held on for the win with Christy second, Johnson third, and Morrison fourth. It was Raybourn’s fourth feature win of the year.

B-Modifieds were next for 15 big laps of excitement in their main event with Dean Wille and Troy Carlyle at the front. A multi-car accident on lap one reset the field for the start after just one lap was in the books as Wille was in search of his fifth win in a row. Visiting Mike Striegel was unable to continue after the first incident as his night came to an end with right front wheel damage. Richard Brainard, Cody Frazon, and Troy Carlyle raced inside the top four on the restart but another caution waved on lap two for a three-car incident.

The next restart saw Wille lead Carlyle and Frazon for the green as the race resumed. Dallas White came up to third by lap five in a heated battle with Frazon as Carlyle stalked Wille with several attempts to pass. Jacob Ebert was the man on the move early from seventeenth on the grid into the top five but hard-luck fell on the former champion as he ultimately pulled out of the race early to finish sixteenth.

Meanwhile, Carlyle slipped in turn three to allow Dallas White to take over second. Carlyle continued to have problems as Ebert moved up to challenge in third. A great battle ensued up front with White moving in on Wille by lap ten in front of Carlyle, Frazon, and Brainard. In heavy lapped traffic, Wille threaded the needle to stay in front of White but White was right there in a battle for the lead. The two leaders raced hard into the corner with Wille colliding with a lapped car as White slipped under to briefly take the lead; unfortunately White spun after taking the lead but the caution waved for the lapped car of Allen Bush, who went over the berm after contact with Wille.

The caution flag waved after the incident and both Wille and White had to go to the tail for the restart, Wille for causing the yellow and White for stopping on the track as Wille was charged with the yellow for sending the lapped car over the turn four berm with 12 laps complete. On the restart, Troy Carlyle led Cody Frazon, Richard Brainard, Ryan Edde, and Ethan Isaacs for the three-lap dash to the checkers. Carlyle raced hard to hold the point as Urbana, Missouri’s Ryan Edde closed in with two to go and looked to challenge for the win; however, Carlyle held off all challengers and claimed his first win of the year over r Ethan Isaacs, Eddie Bray Jr., Cody Frazon, Dallas White, and Dean Wille.

Mid-America Lightning sprints took to the field for their 20-lap main event as heat race winners Mark Billings and Mike Trent sat on the front row for the initial green. It didn’t take long for fellow heat-race winner Bobby Lane to make it a three-man battle up front as Lane took over second with six laps in the books. Lap-after-lap Layne stalked Billings out front with Trent in third. Dusty Murray held strong in fourth with MK Billings fifth just passed the halfway point.

Mark Billings built up a quarter straightaway lead by lap 15 as Layne had his hands full with Trent just behind in third. Billings approached lapped traffic by lap 15 with just five laps remaining as Layne tried all he could to find a better line to catch the leader. In the closing laps, Trent had mechanical problems with just one lap remaining in a heartbreaking finish to fifteenth after running in the top three all race long. In the end, no one had anything for Mark Billings as he claimed the first-ever MALS victory at CMS. Bobby Layne, a veteran at CMS, finished second ahead of Dusty Murray, ninth-starting MK Billings, Beau Heavelow and Ryan Kent.

The Street Stocks rolled out next with Bryce McMillin and Troy Turley on pole position. Racing was fierce from the drop of the green flag as Turley tried to hold off multiple time winner Brett Wood for the lead. Wood went for the lead early in the race but Carter was able to power around both Turley and Wood to take the point at lap six. Caution flew for Brian Inlow shortly after with the order at the front being Carter, Turley, Wood, Allen Perryman and Jay Lyle inside the top five.

When racing resumed, it was a two-man breakaway for the win as Carter held on in front of Wood, who furiously worked the track to find a better line than Carter on the high side. Carter held on through lapped traffic as Wood stayed close. Meanwhile, Turley had a great battle of his own with Perryman and Lyle for the third spot with James McMillin making his way towards the front. In the end, Carter pulled out for his third win of the year in as many appearances. Bret Wood claimed the second position with Turley, Perryman, Lyle, and James McMillin rounding out the top six.

USRA Modified action closed out the night for their 25-lap, $1,000-to-win weekly main event. By virtue of earning the most passing points during the heat races, Gardner, Kansas driver Justin Johnson and Archie, Missouri’s Eddie Bray, Jr., started on the front row of the main event.

The race went green with point’s leader Jim Moody having troubles in turn one to draw a restart on the field. Once the race officially began, Johnson took command with Gunner Martin in hot pursuit. Peculiar, Missouri’s Danny Scrogham ran strong all throughout the night and appeared to be on his way to a podium finish until his night ended in a huge plume of smoke off of turn two and ultimately in the hot pit lane, where a fire broke out. Track official Troy Walls quickly had things under control with the flames as they were extinguished while the race continued under green-flag conditions.

The yellow flag eventually waved while Curt Rackers and Brian Johnson both experienced troubles with Rackers unable to continue. Johnson’s crew tended to their driver in the hot-pit lane and he was able to resume the race only to fall out a few laps later with continuing hard luck. Gunner Martin moved close to Johnson upon the restart but Johnson was able to hold point at the front.

On lap 8, a multi-car incident took place in between turns one and two as Bray’s car went sideways and several drivers having to check-up to avoid contact. Despite a very hard hit by Steve Twenter into Jason Bodenhamer, both drivers were okay but there nights both came to an end as a result of the incident. Dean Wille was also involved and unable to continue as was Richard Layne.

At the next restart, Johnson began to pull away from all pursuers as Terry Schultz rocketed from just inside the top ten all the way to third within two laps after the restart using the high side for all it was worth. Schultz is always exciting on the high side and seems to make the outside work for him time and time again. Tim Karrick stayed in the mix in the closing laps as he and Shultz raced hard for the third position.

In the closing laps, Johnson continued his dominance as Martin, Karrick, and Schultz were unable to close in. When the checkers flew, Johnson claimed his first-ever win at CMS, in victory lane an exhausted Johnson proclaimed, “This has been a long-time coming, we’ve been working really hard on the car and this feels great to finally get a win.” Martin, who has been a model of consistency, wound up second with Karrick overtaking Schultz late in the event for third. Schultz finished fourth after starting seventeenth; Aaron Marrant was fifth, followed by fourteenth-starting Jim Moody in sixth.

Next week is Midwest Coatings and Comfort Inn Race Night at the speedway. General admission for adults is $12, military w/I.D. and senior citizens 65 years and up $10, kids ages six to twelve $5, children 5 and under free. Pit Gates open at 4:30 grandstands at 5:00, drivers, meeting at 6:30, hot laps at 7:00, and racing at 7:30. Pit Passes are $25. Track report line, 660-747-2166.
