kentucky-lake-motor-speedwayCALVERT CITY, Ky. – Illinois drivers claimed a pair of $3,000-to-win features while a hometown standout won his fifth victory of the season Saturday night at at Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway.

Matt Mevert of Steeleville, Illinois, repeated his victory in a June 14 Modified race and Brent Lewis of Harrisburg, Illinois, kept Tait Davenport from winning another $3,000 prize in Pro (Crate) Late Model action in a pair of 35-lap features.

In the 20-lap Late Model main, Tanner English of Benton, Kentucky, prevailed after a furious three-way fight for the lead on the first lap, took command from Randy Sellars on the second circuit and led the rest of the way.

Mike Hodges won the Stock Car main event.

Mevert, who led all the way to victory on June, started fourth in a field of 30 and trailed Nick Hoffman for the first 10 laps before making a challenge. The two drivers raced side-by-side four four laps, with Mevert edging in front on the 14th circuit and pulling away for a decisive win.

Hoffman slipped to third before eventually dropping out just five laps from the end. The St. Louis native, who now races out of Mooresville, North Carolina, for NASCAR regular Carl Edwards, ended up 17th.

Brian Shaw took second, with Bryan Barber third. Trent Young, who has five victories at the track this year, was fourth, with Everett Bradham rounding out the top five. Young, Hoffman, Shaw and Mevert won heat races and Josh Tomlin won the consolation race.

Lewis led all the way in the Crate main, surviving a strong challenge from Davenport, of Benton, Kentucky, who surged ahead on a restart but had to give up the spot because of a caution flag. Davenport, a three-time winner at KLMS this year, had a two-race victory streak snapped.

Pole starter Steve Lance Jr. was third, followed by Ricky Waggoner and Tyler Clem, the 12-year-old sensation from St. Petersburg, Florida, took fifth. Lance, Lewis and Davenport won heat races.

Jarryd Holshouser, the third driver in the three-wide, first-lap battle for the lead in the Late Model feature, finished second with Terry English, the winner’s father, third. Sellars was fourth and Jeffrey Bailey fifth.

Seven different drivers won in the first seven Stock Car features, but repeat winners have scored each of the past three races. Two-time winner Mike Lentz led the first lap before Dale Nelson took over for two circuits. Hodges, who also won May 31, moved in front on the fourth lap and held command the rest of the way. Nelson, Lentz, Richie Berryhill and Tya Cunningham filled out the top five.
