Just one Lucas Cattle Company ULMA-affiliated track was able to hold its race program last weekend but that one track happened to be Cross Timbers, Missouri driver J.D. Hubert’s home track, Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Missouri, where he scored his second trip to victory lane this season.

A solid field of cars showed up for the track’s Saturday night championship race program as late model drivers contested three preliminary heat races prior to the night’s main event. Jake Williams, Hubert, and Ethan Young were all victorious in heat-race action.

Hubert and Williams led the charge to the initial main event green flag with Larry Ferris and Young in tow. A three-car spin involving ULMA point’s leader Dwight Niehoff, Young, and Phil Edmondson on the opening lap forced an early race caution, after which both Niehoff and Young retired to the pits with damage; Edmondson continued.

After the restart, Hubert shot out front to take command in front of Williams but bad luck continued to plaque front-running drivers as Williams spun in turns one and two while running second to draw another caution by lap three.

The field returned to action with Hubert leading Payton Looney, Ferris, Todd McCoin, and R.D. Peterson until another caution period waved over the field on lap 11. With Hubert showing the way green-flag action returned but only for a quick three laps as a single-car spin by Cody Holtcamp led to a grinding crash involving Lane Ehlert and Jake Williams. Both drivers were okay after the contact but retired to the pits with too much damage on their machines to continue.

Another four laps were run under green condition with race-long leader Hubert continuing to dominate the race over Looney, Ferris, Schutt, and binning inside the top five. On lap 18, a three-car spin on the backstretch led to the final caution of the race with just two laps remaining.

On the restart Looney, in search of his first win at the speedway this season found a quick way around the track and put heavy pressure on Hubert for the win. With just one lap remaining Looney ran the low side with Hubert up high. On the final turns, Looney had one last attempt to overtake Hubert but came up just feet short in his bid for the win as Hubert claimed his second speedway win of the year.

Looney ran a strong second with fifteenth-starting Brian Schutt clawing his way all the way to third by the time the checkered flag fell. Ferris held on to fourth at the finish just in front of Todd McCoin. Rounding out the top ten were Jon Binning, Peterson, Ryan Petersheim, Tommy Cordray, and Chris Cox.

Action returns to Lucas Oil Speedway again this Saturday night for another round of championship racing at the track for its Public Safety Appreciation Night as all Police, Fire, Hospital, and Rescue Personnel are admitted FREE to the Speedway with ID. Saturday, Gates open at 5:00 PM Hot Laps at 7:00 PM and racing at 7:30 PM. Visit www.lucasoilspeedway.com for additional information regarding remaining events.

Callaway Raceway in Fulton, Missouri was scheduled to run last Friday evening and things looked relatively good until just after the heat races had completed when rain moved into the area, ultimately leading to the postponement of racing until this Friday, August 22.

Two heat races were ran for the 11 cars on hand with Jon Binning taking heat one ahead of Dwight Niehoff and Justin Russell while Chris Lapp outlasted former track champion Payton Looney and Todd McCoin in the second heat race. Drivers are set to return this Friday to complete the race program, which is the final event of the year at Callaway Raceway this season. For complete details visit www.callawayraceways.com.

Once again, Mother Nature foiled the plans for Randolph County Raceway in Moberly, Missouri as overnight rains into Saturday morning saturated the grounds of the speedway forcing cancellation of the night’s events. However, the track is set to fire back up this Saturday with a full program of weekly racing for fans and drivers.
