Dustin Boney Makes Triumphant Return CMS Victory Lane!

(Warrensburg, MO) Hot summer weather blanketed the region throughout the weekend as fans and drivers braved the elements for the first time in three weeks at Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) for the return of weekly racing. CMS came back to life after a two-week break during the Missouri State Fair with drivers competing in preliminary heat races and main events throughout the night.
USRA Modified drivers fine-tuned their race programs ahead of next weekend’s twin$1500-to-win special events and it was Dustin Boney from Gower, Missouri, who brought home his first USRA modified win of the season after a break in his racing career to focus on his business.
Dean Wille from Warrensburg claimed the B-Modified feature for his fifth main-event win the year and another Warrensburg driver, Brett Wood, went home with his eighth feature win in the Street Stocks. Jason Ryun from Kansas City grabbed his first feature victory in the Pure Stocks as Tyler Nelson from Olathe, Kansas, took the double checkers in the Allstar Midget Series feature event.
The Pure Stocks started the night off with heat-racing action after a delay due to an electrical issue in the turn two track lights, the growing Pure Stock division had eight drivers checked in for competition. Don Johnson from Overland Park crossed the line taking his second heat win of the season with Jason Ryun from Kansas City for his second of the year in heat two.
The feature event started with Ryun as the early race leader with Johnson and Christy in close pursuit. Ryun was determined to hang on to his lead and after several cautions while point leader Leroy Morrison, Jr., of Raymore showed some nice work on the high side and moved up into the second spot at lap six. As the first checkers of the night flew, Jason Ryun hung on for his first Pure Stock main event victory followed by Morrison with his best finish this season in second. Christy moved up to third with Johnson fourth and Lee Scott from Holden fifth.
B-Modified drivers had another chance to test their race set-ups prior to the Labor Day weekend USRA B-Mod $1,500 to-win special event. During the three qualifying heat races, Brett Wood from Warrensburg took the initial heat race with another Warrensburg driver and point leader, Dean Wille, who moved up for the win in the second heat, while Jeff Douty from Butler crossed the line to take the third heat victory.
The feature started as Douty flew into the first turn with Wille close trailing. Wille stayed close for the remainder of the race while placing pressure on Douty throughout the feature. Behind them, Jordan Clemons from Kearney and Mike Higley of Kansas City battled back and forth for third. Ed Noll and Cody Brill also were in the mix in the top six. Douty held off Wille until the final laps when Wille was able to use lapped traffic to pick up his fifth CMS feature win of the season. Douty looked strong to the end in second with Higley passing Clemons late for third, Clemons ended fourth with Noll fifth and Brill sixth.
The Allstar Midget Series (ASMS) returned to Warrensburg for their third visit of the season. In the opening ASMS heat race, Mitchell Davis from Auburn, Illinois, grabbed the first heat win and Tyler Nelson from Olathe, Kansas gained the win in the final Midget heat race to set up the starting line-up for the feature.
Nelson quickly established his lead after the green flag flew while Pat Schudy, the series point leader, moved into second after Mitchell Davis developed an engine problem early in the race and had to depart. Behind the leaders, a heated battle ensued for third as Kris Schudy, Pat’s son, tried to hang onto the spot, but Nathan Benson and Todd Jackson kept things close. In the end, Nelson, who is second in the ASMS point’s race, entered victory lane with the decisive win. Nelson donated a portion of his payout to modified driver, Jason Bodenhamer who had lost his home last week to a fire. Pat Schudy maintained the second spot with his son Kris, third. Benson brought it home in fourth while Jackson finished fifth.
In the Street Stock division, drivers worked hard this week trying to figure out how to beat multiple-time feature winnerBrett Wood after he claimed his seventh feature win in mid-July. Troy Turley and Clayton Campbell stepped up recently and claimed the Street Stock winner’s circle. The two heat race winners included Brett Wood in the first heat and Jeremiah Wilson from Concordia for his first heat victory in the final heat race.
As the green flew for the feature start, Wood was the driver to beat and seemed to be on a mission after pulling double duty in a B-modified. Wood was never really challenged even after Kyle Guy from Warrensburg had an unfortunate scrape with the front-side wall to slow the field. Troy Turley tried to make something happen on the restart, but Wood sailed on for his eighth feature win this season. Turley looked good again this week in second with Jeremiah Wilson with his best finish this year in third. Campbell ended up fourth while veteran driver from Holden, Herb Danner came away fifth.
This week the competition heated up in the USRA modified heat races, which usually brings out tight racing action as drivers attempted to improve finishing positions for maximum passing points. On Saturday evening, Buddy Benedict edged out Tim Karrick in heat one. Making his first run this season at CMS, Dustin Boney from Gower, Missouri grabbed heat two in front of Jason Thompson with Sam Florence from Kansas City edging out Aaron Marrant from Orrick in heat three.
Boney seemed to be comfortable at the front of the pack and almost made it look like he never missed a beat in his two-year absence. Behind him, several drivers mixed it up including former track Champion, Jason Thompson and Matt Johnson from Archie. Also in the fray were Jason Bodenhamer, Tim Karrick, Aaron Marrant and Dean Wille. Several cautions, including a lap two restart cost several drivers including Buddy Benedict, Danny Scrogham, Steve Twenter and Brian Johnson an early exit in the feature after a grinding crash.
As the laps counted down, it was obvious Boney was the driver to beat as he claimed his first USRA modified feature win of the year. Johnson moved up late for the second spot past Thompson who hung on for third, Karrick looked strong in fourth and Wille also moved up late in the race for fifth with Bodenhamer sixth. In victory lane an emotional Boney thanked all of his crew and his wife for putting so much time in on the car in order for him to be ready on race night.
During the intermission break, drivers took part in a collection for local racer and many time CMS winner Jason Bodenhamer, who recently lost his home and personal belongings in a fire. CMS wishes to thank the drivers and fans for donating to Jason so generously.
Next weekend at CMS will be one for the memory books as drivers in multiple classes converge on the track for the Labor Day weekend on Saturday, August 30 and Sunday, August 31. On Saturday the action gets underway with $1500-to-win USRA Modifieds, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks, Lightning Sprints and ULMA Late Models. Action continues on Sunday for ‘Open Wheel Madness’ night with $1500-to-win USRA Modifieds, $1500-to-win USRA B-Modifieds, Mod Lites, and the final appearance of the year for the W.A.R. Sprint Car Series. Action on both nights gets underway with gates opening at 5 and racing at 7:30.
