kentucky-lake-motor-speedwayCALVERT CITY, Kentucky – Trent Young led from start to finish to claim his sixth Modified victory of the season at Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway Saturday night. This one paid $4,000 to the Hopkinsville, Kentucky, driver.

Randy Sellars also became a six-time winner, passing pole starter Tim Brown coming out of Turn 4 of the first lap and pulling away. In other features, Credence Mott in Pro (Crate) Late Model and Brian Markham in Stock Car took their first wins of the season.

Young swept the first three features of the 2014 season at the 3/8-mile KLMS oval, including the $5,000-to-win Bluegrass Nationals feature on April 26. But other big-money specials had eluded him. He finished second to Nick Hoffman of Mooresville, North Carolina, two weeks ago in a $4,000-to-win race. Hoffman also won the big money on July 19, and Matt Mevert of Steeleville, Illinois, had won three other specials.

But Young was the class of a 34-car field Saturday night, taking the win over Tyler Nicely, Chad Kinder and Bryan Barber.

Brian Shaw passed Kinder for second place on lap 18 and challenged Young in the early laps after restarts for the several caution flags that interrupted competition. But Shaw slapped the wall in Turns 1-2 on a restart on lap 25, and five laps later he brought out the final yellow when he made solid contact with the wall in Turn 4. He was done for the night, and ended up 17th.

The restart on lap 26 was caused by a violent crash on the backstretch that destroyed the car of Matt Cooper, who tangled with a lapped car, slammed into the wall and flipped. Cooper was not injured.

Sellars cruised to the Late Model win, with Brown second. Chris Shelton, Jeffrey Bailey and Lee Thomason rounded out the top five.

In the Crate main, Mott made a high-side pass of Jeff Walston on lap 15, grazed the Turn 4 wall two laps later and saw Walston regain the lead, but regained command on lap 18 and pulled away to the victory. Walston, a five-time winner this season, was second, followed by Brent Lewis, Ronnie Cooper and Adam Ray.

Markham took the lead from Kassidi Gibbs on the sixth lap, with a heated battle for second place just behind him. Gibbs dropped out after contact with Mike Hodges caused front suspension failure on her car, leaving the fight to Hodges, Mike Lentz and Bradley Hobbs. Lentz got second place with three laps to go, and Hodges, Hobbs and Keaton Downing rounded out the top five.
