The 2014 Lucas Cattle Company ULMA season will forever be noted as one of the closest and most intense battles for the overall championship in the eight-year history of the association. This Saturday, new leader Jon Binning of Warrensburg, Missouri brings a slim two-point advantage into the final night of action over Lockwood, Missouri driver Dwight Niehoff. The two drivers put it all on the line this weekend as the season concludes at Lucas Oil Speedway (LOS) in Wheatland, Missouri for the final race of the season.

Saturday at LOS, a whopping 28 cars participated in the racing activity throughout the night with three big heat races contested to set the main-event lineup. Tommy Cordray led Justin Russell and Jeremy Kelley to the finish for heat one. Larry Ferris bested Ethan Young and J.D. Hubert for heat two, while Brian Schutt claimed heat three over Jon Binning and Harlen Kennedy. Lane Ehlert bested Phil Edmondson in the B-Feature to finalize the 24-car starting lineup.

Highlights from the latest Lucas Oil Speedway press release regarding last weekend’s main-event action include … “As the ULMA main event rolled off for their 25-lap, $1,000 to win main event, multi-time winner in 2014 Larry Ferris led the field to the green flag with Justin Russell to his outside. Ferris led throughout the race but a multi-car tangle on the original start brought out the caution. The restart was deemed to be an original restart as all competitors restarted in their original spots. Ferris led throughout the event and went on to cross the finish line first for the apparent win.”

However, post-race technical inspection led by the track’s lead inspector revealed that Ferris, Schutt, and Kelley did not pass inspection and were ultimately disqualified from the official finish; thus awarding the win to J.D. Hubert, who garnered his third main-event win of the year at the speedway, this time ahead of Jon Binning. By virtue of the unfortunate disqualifications, Binning advanced to second in the final rundown and assumed command of the Lucas Cattle Company ULMA Championship Standings with one race remaining.

Payton Looney, Tommy Cordray, and Chris Cox also benefitted from the post-race inspections and walked away with top-five finishes on the evening. Rounding out the top ten were Ethan Young, Jake Williams, Justin Russell, and Mike Montague in his first appearance of the year, Dwight Niehoff was tenth at the finish.
