NEW RICHMOND, Wis.-Rodney Sanders captured his 50th career United States Modified Touring Series victory Friday night as the USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental invaded the Cedar Lake Speedway for round 1 of The Masters.

Although the two-time defending USMTS National Champion from Happy, Texas, led every lap of the race, he was never more than two car-lengths ahead of his challengers.

USMTS Rookie of the Year points leader Jesse Sobbing challenged the 25-year-old for the first five laps until Cade Dillard snuck past and began to pressure the leader.

Sobbing regained the second spot ten laps later and chased Sanders to the white flag when Joey Jensen made a bold move to secure the runner-up spot by a bumper over Sobbing, who settled for a third-place paycheck.

Dillard held on for a fourth-place finish with Craig Thatcher finishing fifth to register his third top-five finish in as many nights.

Cory Crapser, Matt Leer, Dan Ebert, Zack VanderBeek and Brent Larson completed the top ten.

The second night of The Masters continues at the Cedar Lake Speedway on Saturday with another $3,000-to-win main event for the USMTS road warriors.

Grandstands open at 4 p.m. and race time is 7 p.m. Ticket prices are $30, kids ages 6-16 are $15 and children ages 5 and under are free.

The Cedar Lake Speedway is a high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval located 1.0 mile east of SR 35 on SR 64 (in Somerset), then 4.2 miles north on CR C to CR CC, then left 1.8 miles. For more information call 715-248-7119 or check out www.cedarlakespeedway.com online.

13th Annual Stars & Stripes Shootout-which was rained out Memorial Day Weekend at the Upper Iowa Speedway-will take place at the Cresco Speedway in Cresco, Iowa, on Sunday. Hot laps start at 6 p.m. with racing to follow.

The event will also put the spotlight on the Holley Iron Man Series featuring USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods plus USRA Hobby Stocks will also be in action at the mighty Howard County Fairgrounds.

The Cresco Speedway is a high-banked 4/10-mile clay oval located 0.2 miles north of SR 9 on SW 7th (at the Howard County Fairgrounds). For more information call 563-547-3400.
