St. Francois County Raceway, Farmington MO, Race Recap for June 27, 2015 – This has certainly been a year for weird weather, no racing last weekend at most of the area tracks, that is all but one. Yup, St.
Francois County Raceway in Farmington does it again, but not without a fight. Out of the blue skies, the Wicked Witch of the sky decided she was going to pop up a shower right over the track. As quick as it came, it left, but the track had to be reworked , packed in and even had two sets of hot laps, one before and one after the rain. The track was smooth and slick and taking rubber by the end of the night and, according to the Late Model Feature winner, that was fine with him as long as he was leading. What did I just say, Late Model Feature winner? SFCR doesn’t run Late Models?! OH YES THEY DID! For the first time in 12 plus years Late Models ran at the mighty Bullring in Farmington. That’s a lot of car, a lot of tire, but racing was good, two wide and lots of dirt flying!

What do you do if you own a pure street and after pill draw is over you see only 9 cars have shown up. Well if you are Chris Boyd you go home, get your car, take the battery out of your tow vehicle put it in the race car and take home a top five finish, that’s what you do. The track was really slick, lots of single file racing and a driver hoping the car in front of them goes in too deep, washes up the track and they get the pass. Charlie Savage, Ryan Williams were your heat race winner is in lowest car count of the year for the Pure Streets; everyone must be on vacation. In the feature we see Jason Neel get his first feature win.
At Jason’s first time on the microphone in front of the crowd he forgot who his sponsors were (he will get them next time for sure), but he got the most important one, his wife, so all is good. Charlie Savage, Robbie Williams, Ryan Williams and Chris Boyd round out your top five in the Pure Street Class.

Maybe everyone traded in their Pure Street cars for B Mod; four heat races for B Mods this weekend. In what felt like the never ending feature, the B Mod racked up seven caution flags for the night. When its slick and only two lanes, drivers tend to use the bumper to get the guy in front of them out of the way and we sure saw that in this class.

Some of the drivers took the hint, some didn’t, some left happy and some left not so happy. There were so many cars that we ran a B Main to determine who was running the feature. Eddie Gross, Danny Ems, Dusty Homan and Ryan Middaugh were your heat race winners. Your feature winner almost didn’t make it to the track, Your Feature winner Dusty Homan had some issues on the way to the track. Apparently the car wasn’t feeling like racing and tried to escape from the trailer, but the drive shaft caught in the trailer and kept car on board. Seems like Homan’s drive shaft would make a good New York State Trooper! Once at the track, Chris Boyd and several others pitched in and repaired the damage only to have a brake rotor explode in the heat race and almost bring the car to a screeching halt, repairs were made and he came back and took another victory! Ryan Middaugh, Shane Blair, Eddie Gross and Danny Ems round out your top five in the B Mod Feature.

Kenny Wallace was in the house!!!!!!! No, not really, but I bet when fans saw the #36 Toyota, UNOH car pull on the track they thought so. As it turns out Billy Smith was racing one of Kenny’s new cars, built by NASCAR Driver David Stremme’s company, Lethal Chassis. Stremme is no stranger to the dirt at St. Francois County Raceway, in what I believe (my memory is horrible) Stremme’s introduction to dirt track racing came right here at SFCR as a guest of Kenny Wallace at a NASCAR Night at the track back in the early 2000’s. Earlier this month, Billy was driving the new car at a practice day at Tri City and a steering shaft broke sending Smith into the wall destroying the front end of the car. In less than 48 hours, Lethal Chassis had the frame and was starting the repair. After getting the car back, Wallace decided running it in the Summer Nationals was not the place to try to figure out the setup. So he sent the car to Farmington and told Billy to drive it and get it figured out, so that is just what Smith did. He took it and won and didn’t just win on any old night, he won on one of the biggest nights of the year, DOUBLE POINTS NIGHT! That’s right, Smith who has been gone three nights this year working for boss, Kenny Wallace, is now in third place, in striking distance of points leader Jeff Asher. Rusty Griffaw, Tim Nash and John Rippenda were your heat race winners with Billy Smith winning the dash. Smith, Rusty Griffaw, John Rippenda, Kasey Nations and Jeff Asher were your top five in the feature. Not only were they racing for double points, but race promoter, Brian Blair sweetened the purse for the A Mod Class. Racing was good, we watched Griffaw and Smith race side by side then it looked like Smith lost some ground then midway through the race it looked like Griffaw lost forward bite and Smith made the pass look easy.

The track was smooth for the Sprint Feature; you could see the track taking the rubber, a lane at the bottom and one at the top, just a little in the middle but mostly top and bottom. Tim Montgomery, Joey Boyd and Joey Montgomery were your feature winners with Tommy Worley Jr. getting a win in the Dash. Only one caution during the feature, racing was fast; at times, in turn four, cars were three wide, but no one had anything for race winner Joey Montgomery. He motored to an easy win with Tommy Worley, Joey Boyd, Tim Montgomery and Jeff Wurst rounding out the top five.

In a late week announcement the track invited the drivers to the Bullring for a little show of $1500 to win a GUARANTEED Purse, a purse that rivals that of the Sprint Car Class! These cars have huge motors,
huge tires, they sit wider and longer than the modfieds we are used to seeing. A big car for the little Bullring but the drivers put on a good side by side race in the heats and the feature. Tim Manville and Kenny Rumble were your heat winners with Dewayne Keifer winning the dash.

In the feature, the track turned black in the corners from the bottom to the top; turns one and two had more rubber down than Hwy 67 in front of Hefner’s Furniture! While Tim Manville stole the show, Weber and Zobrist put on the best show running side by side almost the entire race. We can’t wait to have the Late Model Class back at SFCR.

No racing action at SFCR over the July 4th weekend but when we return on July 11th, it will be $5 night at the races where grandstand admission is cut in half! And as always kids 12 and under will be free. Make plans now to come, because with a week off, who knows what crazy idea Brian and Amy will come up with for the fans! Gates will open at 4 PM, Hot laps at 6 PM and racing at 7 PM.
