(Warrensburg, MO) Night one of the Tenth Annual Tom Wilson Memorial BBQ Bowl kicked off Friday evening as 100 drivers filed in along with the great Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) race fans. It was a big night in many ways for several drivers competing in the Street Stocks, ULMA Late Models, USRA Modifieds, Allstar Midget Series, and USRA B-Mods.

Dean Wille of Warrensburg captured the track’s annual Street Stock $1,500-to-Win event by holding off a pack of wolves on the prowl trying to take home the big bucks. Through several caution periods and some challenges on the track, Wille managed to prevail. “This seems to be the only class I can win in right now, I gave it away during the B-mods, the fastest car doesn’t always win, it feels good to be back in victory lane,” stated the Warrensburg driver at the conclusion of the event. Brian Ziegler and Brett Wood had an intense battle for second and that may have been the difference for Wille as the two put on a great drive for the fans.

For night one qualifying for Saturday’s $5,000-to-Win USRA Modified event Gunner Martin earned starting position number one for the event by accumulating more passing points in his two heat races than any other driver. Also locking themselves into the finale from the combined points from the heat races were Jim Moody, Terry Schultz, Eric Turner, Jon Sheets, and Dalton Kirk. Six additional Modified drivers made their way onto the starting grid through the B-main, those drivers were Aaron Marrant, Chad Lyle, Jason Bodenhamer, Lewis Jackson, Jason Pursley, and Luke Driskell.

Another complete program is on hand for the USRA Modifieds as the outside row starting positions will be determined throughout preliminary heat races and any needed “B” or “C” main events. After the conclusion of Saturday’s big race there will be a fireworks display for all to enjoy.

The Allstar Midget Series made its first appearance of the year at CMS after previously being rained out over the Memorial Day weekend. Clinton Boyles and Tyler Nelson claimed the two heat races for the 14 drivers on hand. For the main event it was a showdown of youth as pole-sitter Tyler Nelson and outside row starter Kory Schudy led the field to green. In a race that ran straight through green flag to checkered flag, Schudy prevailed for a win over Nelson, Wesley Smith, Boyles, and Chad Frewaldt. The race was close right to the finish as the top four ran close together the entire race distance giving fans one of the better races of the evening.

Nineteen Lucas Cattle Company ULMA Late Models signed in for night two of the association’s annual Triple Crown Shootout presented by RacinDirt.com. Three heat races were needed to sort out the starting lineup for the 20-lap feature event. Payton Looney, Todd McCoin, and Jon Melloway, all fighting for Shootout points, picked up the heat race wins. Looney captured night one of the shootout the night before led the field to the green at CMS.

From the drop of the green flag Looney quickly distanced himself from the rest of the drivers as McCoin, Melloway, and John O’Neal fought for the second spot behind the leader. Three caution periods for minor incidents slowed the field and on each restart Looney maintained a comfortable lead leaving the rest of the drivers to run for second.

Bobby Penney had one of his best-ever ULMA runs and fought his way into the top five by just past the midway point of the event. O’Neal had some back and forth moments but recovered to finish on the podium by race end. By the time 20 laps ended, Looney had picked up his second-consecutive and fifth overall ULMA win on the year. McCoin finished a strong second while O’neal was third. Penney came away fourth with Dustin Hodges fifth and Dwight Niehoff in sixth. ULMA Late Models will return to CMS on August 15.

First-time winners always receive a thundering applause from the knowledgeable and courteous CMS fans and that is just what Grain Valley, Missouri’s Nic Bennett heard after he claimed his first-ever checkered flag in the USRA B-Mod main event. Bennett ran comfortably up front with a few challenges from Dean Wille until Wille slipped back to eighth in the run down. Bennett grabbed the victory from pole position ahead of Springfield’s Cody Nivens, Brett Wood of Warrensburg, Jason Billups of Holt, and Russell Niehoff of Lockwood.
