Race Recap for Saturday, July 11, 2015

Hello Summer! St. Francois County Raceway saw a change in the weather this week – HOT!! But that didn’t stop thousands of awesome race fans from coming out and enjoying $5 Night at the races!

Some might think that Brian Blair, who is recovering from back surgery, may have gotten too heavy on the medication and, wait, he did what? He added another class?? On $5 Night??? Yep, he did. The fans got a little more for their 5 bucks this week. Brian decided to add the 600cc Micros to the show! If you got there early, you saw a couple of these little rockets on display inside the front gate behind the main grandstands.

Billy Joe Beard and Christopher King had their race cars on display and were meeting with fans coming in. Scottie Gretzmacher felt the need to pick on the little guys and brought his 410 Sprint Car over, and he too met with fans. Always good to get there early! Hey, BIG CONGRATS to A-Mod Driver Tim Nash and his wife Kimberly on their new addition to the pit crew, Chase Alexander Nash!! Since Tim is out on maternity leave, Greg Swaringim took the wheel of Tim’s 717 A-Mod for the night.

Intermission proved once again the unbelievable generosity of the racing family and the racing community. Some of our drivers set out to the grandstands with helmets in an attempt to raise a few bucks for a young man named Braxton Gross, who was recently diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer. The drivers only had a few minutes to try to gather what they could, and the awesome and amazing Fans at SFCR made their efforts worth it. In those few short minutes, $1100 was raised for Braxton and his family. Unbelievable!!! The Racing Community is simply amazing and always willing to lend a hand when times get tough.

The Pure Street count was down a little this week, but holy moly the other classes sure pulled them in, WOW! 98 Race Cars in the pits this week – 10 Pure Streets, 23 B-Mods, 26 A-Mods, 21 Sprints, and 18 Micros!

How’s THAT for 5 bucks?!?!

Jason Neel sure is liking that feeling of carrying the checkered flag.

So much so that he fought thru the blistering heat, sun and sweat in the eyes and powered his way up to win the first Pure Street Heat Race in his #94 Monte Carlo. He was followed by the 81H of Mike Hurst finishing 2nd, 76G of Travis Goodman picking up 3rd, 44 of Garrett Mathes coming home 4th, and the 18R of Rodney Greenwalt rounding out the field in 5tth. Pure Street Heat Race #2 had a battle of the brothers up front with the 34 of Ryan Williams coming out on top. He was followed by brother Robbie Williams in the 43x finishing 2nd, the 32 of Robert Hicks finishing 3rd, the 00 of David Baker picked up 4th, and due to unfortunate mechanical issues, the 32x of Mike Abney wasn’t able to start the race. Feature time had Robbie fighting back brother Ryan and also Heat 1 winner Jason Neel. Robbie Williams parked his 43x in victory lane when it was all said and done. Brother Ryan Williams was 2nd on car 34, the 94 of Jason Neel crossed the line 3rd, followed by the 81h of Mike Hurst and 00 of David Baker rounding out the top 5.

26 Heavy Hitters in the A-Modifieds were on hand this week, putting on some outstanding racing, but at the end of the night, it was “The Festus Flash” Rusty Griffaw getting the sweep, or hat-trick as they call it, winning his heat, the dash, and the feature. The Team Iron County Recycling 777 of Jeff Asher topped the first of 4 heat races picking up the win over Dave Armstrong (34) and Matt Eaton (53). For the 2nd time this season, Billy “The Kidd” Smith has left his car at home and brought his bosses car out to test. Seems to be working, as Smith powered the

#36 Toyota TRIAD powered Lethal Chassis to the front of Heat Race 2 to pick up the checkers. Smith was followed by the 22 of Scott Anderson and the 32j of Terry Johnson. Heat Race 3 is where “The Festus Flash”

started his night off right. This would be the first of 3 wins for Rusty Griffaw and his #16 Team Iron County Recycling GRT. 2nd went to the 18 of Brent Thompson, and another Team ICR car, the 01w of Derrick “Wally”

Black finished 3rd. Wally’s father and teammate, the Team IRC 10x of Jim Black picked up the win in Heat Race 4 over the 717 of Greg Swaringim and the 32c of Chris Hayes. Griffaw, again, came out on top with the Dash win, starting him on the pole for the A-Main. Billy Smith and Brent Thompson put some heat on Griffaw, but at the end of the 20 lapper, it was Griffaw in victory lane over Thompson and Smith.

When the fire-breathing 410 Sprint Cars hit the track, some wondered who that guy was driving the 5 car. Finally coming off a somewhat long string of ‘bad luck’ and a hard crash into the wall early in the season, Kory Bales was glad to have something go his way. But they made him earn it. the 67 of Joe Boyd traded lanes with Bales the entire heat, and on the last lap, it looked as if the 97 of Tommy Worley, Jr. was going to steal the checkers. But Kory powered out of turn 4 in the race to the line and picked up the win, with Worley 2nd and Boyd 3rd. The “Tank”

Jimmy Bridgeman is getting his new ‪#‎14t Maxim Chassis figured out.

Bridgeman won the 2nd Heat Race over the 32 of Tim Montgomery and the 21p of Adam Parmely. Former Track Champion, Springfield, IL’s Jimmy Hurley in car 35x picked up the 3rd Heat Race win over the 7c of Joe B.

Miller and 88 Jeff Wurst. Tim Montgomery won the Dash and secured his pole starting position for the A-Main. However Tommy Worley Jr would take the lead fairly early and never look back, parking his car in the winners circle ahead of Tim Montgomery, Jimmy Hurley, Jimmy Bridgeman, and Kory Bales.

the 3D of Lou Driemeier picked up the win in the first of 4 B-Modified Heats over the 24 of Matt Denoyer and the 25 of Josh Hauf. Heat Race 2 had the 10 of Dusty Homan carrying the checkers with the 4g of Eddie Gross finishing 2nd and the 10x of Kyle Jarrett 3rd. The Wallbanger Jeremy Welborn had his 27w hooked up enough to pick up a Heat Race 3 win over teammate Scott Jarrett in car 4m. The R7 of Randy Forster finished 3rd. Kody Savage powered his #13 to the front to win Heat Race 4 over the 69 of Kenny Harris and the12 of Kaleb Jones. Gross won the Feature and parked his 4g in victory lane. Homan, Driemeier, K. Savage and S.

Jarrett rounded out the top 5.

Our guest class for the night was the 600cc Micros. These are a down-scaled version of a Sprint Car, powered by 600cc Motorcycle Engines. Some say the 1/4 mile is just too big for these little cars.

Other’s put them on a stopwatch and see that they are just a couple 10ths of a second off the lap times that the 410 Sprints are turning. 18 Cars pulled in, likely using this opportunity as a test and tune for the POWRi show coming up in 2 weeks (July 25). D.E.A.F. Racing’s ‪#‎58h Luke Hanning was the winner of Heat Race 1. He was followed by the 95j of Josh Fisher and the 16x of Jordan Masson. Heat Race 2 had the 51b of Joe B. Miller carrying the checkers ahead of 28 Billy Beard and 20 Dylan Benscoter. Allen Cope picked up the 3rd Heat Race win in his 08c over Chris King in the 13k and the 12c of Carlee Gress. Joe B. Miller was off like a rocket in the feature, picking up the win over Cope, Hanning, Gress, and Benscoter.

Next Saturday Night, July 18th, the B-Mods will be taking their tops off and racing for, wait, what?? OH, the tops of their cars…. They’re taking their roofs off and running their cars topless. Oh, I gotcha.

TOPLESS B-Mods racing for $1,000 to WIN!!! You’ll be able to see right in the car and watch the drivers sawing on the steering wheels. Don’t miss it!!! This is their biggest payout of the year, so they’re gonna be pushing hard for the win! YOU need to BE THERE! Gates open at 4, Hot Laps at 6, Racing at 7!!
