Race Recap for Saturday, July 18th, 2015
It started off as a cloudy morning, but as the day progressed, the clouds broke up and it became sunny and HOT, and made for another exciting night at The Fastest Bullring in Missouri! Burch Fencing Night at the Races!! 83 cars in the pits!!

We had a special guest with us this week. 5 year old Braxton Gross joined us for a night at the races! For those who don’t know Braxton, he was recently diagnosed with Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis, which is a rare cancer-like disease which it treated by weekley chemotherapy and steroids. What an awesome young man full of life and fun, and we were so blessed to have him join us! More on him in a minute…

How ‘bout a little “Blast from the Past” to take you back to the good ol days of yesteryear! 18 Vintage Cars rolled in to SFCR to put on a show that reminded us of how far our sport has progressed throughout the years. Some of the old drivers we all remember are still wheeling these cars today, and some young newer drivers have joined the fleet. One of the coolest things about this class is that many of these cars have 2 seats, and bring passengers along for the race!

Klay Buckley and his #37 car picked up the win in the first of 3 heat races. He was followed by the #35 of Rich Wolfmeier and the #25 of Randy Horton, Jr.

The #8 1957 Chevy of Tim Eaves carried the checkers for Heat Race 2, with the #75 of John Self finishing 2nd and the #65 of Cliff Hensley finishing 3rd.

Driver of the familiar #87 Sprint Car, Kent Buckley, hurt his motor a few weeks ago, but for this race, he jumped in one of the many Buckley family-owned vintage race cars, the Tubby Black Tribute #1 and picked up the win in the 3rd and final heat race, beating the #14 of uncle Kary Buckley and the #5 of Brian Wolfmeier to the finish line.

Kevin Worley got the win the rest of the guys wanted, parking his #28 in Victory Lane at the end of the Feature Event. He was followed by the #1 of Kent Buckley, the #5 of Brian Wolfmeier, the #75 of John Self, and Dustin Adams, who was pulling double-duty, rounded out the top 5 in the family-owned #66 car.

I suppose the Pure Streets had booked a day at the lake to beat the heat, and 8 of them decided to come and race. Travis Goodman drove his #76g to a win over the 43x of Robbie Williams and the 34 of Ryan Williams. Robbie would power his way up to get the Feature win and park his 43x in the winners circle, with the 34 of Ryan Williams finishing 2nd and the 94 of Jason Neel 3rd.

Billy “The Kidd” Smith brought out the bosses car once again for some more testing, and picked up the first Heat Race win in the Kenny Wallace owned Toyota/JEGS/ UNOH #36 Lethal Chassis, with the 26j of Jeff Frowhitter finishing 2nd and the 56 of Jeff Asher and his new Team GRT car finishing 3rd.

The 227 of Bobby Despain won the 2nd Heat Race over the 53 of Matt Eaton and the 26 of Kasey Nations.

Nations would come back and win the Dash, giving him front row poll starting position in the A-Main. Frowhitter finished 2nd making it a battle of the 26’s for the front row starting spots. Eaton finished 3rd, with Despain 4th, Smith 5th and Asher 6th.

When the green dropped, Nations was on the loud pedal and not looking back. Nations drove his #26 to the Feature Win over Smith, Eaton, Despain, and the 45 of Matt Dotson.

The temperature wasn’t the only thing hot, and it seemed as if some tempers were beginning to get hot as well. The Sprint Cars started out the night with what appeared to be a wheelie-fest, with the #5 of Kory Bales the #20 of Steven Russell, the 14t of Jimmy Bridgeman, and many others standing them up and getting the crowd excited! Not so much a good thing for the drivers, as it’s impossible to steer with your front tires in the air. Looks really cool though!

Keith Burch won the first of 3 Heat Races over the 12x of Joey Montgomery and “The Twister” Tommy Worley, Jr in the 97.

Kevin Petty’s luck was finally improving. Starting the season out with motor issues and fuel issues, it looked as if the “Black Cloud” would finally blow away, and at the end of the 2nd Heat Race, it was Petty in the Liquid Nitro #72 carrying the checkered flag. Steven Russell was 2nd in car #20, and Joe B. Miller 3rd in the Peanuts Campbell owned #7C.

The 3rd Heat Race was won by the #3 of Dustin Adams, who was driving double-duty with his Sprint and in the Vintage class. Adams was followed by the #88 of Jeff Wurst and the #14t of Jimmy “Tank” Bridgeman.
Joey Montgomery (12x) won the dash, followed by Adams, Russell, Wurst, Petty, and Burch.

Montgomery led every lap of the A-Main and parked the Reddick Motorsports #12x in Victory Lane. Worley, Russell, Burch, and Wurst were your Top 5. There was a lot going behind Montgomery during those 25 laps. A lot of cars fighting for position, and it seemed as if some tempers maybe were starting to ignite between the #2 of Keith Burch and the #97 of Tommy Worley, Jr. Another on-track mishap between the #72 of Kevin Petty and the #14T of Jimmy Bridgeman ended Petty’s run. Bridgeman was able to fight back to a 10th place finish. #itsjustracin and #itsalwaysjustracin seemed to be a couple common hashtags on Sunday and Monday.

The B-Modifieds looked a little different this week. The Topless 20 race paid $1,000 to the winner. No they weren’t driving half naked…. They took the roofs and sail panels off their race cars. Why? Why not… Removing the roofs and Sail Panels takes away some downforce and some of the handling of the cars. And, it’s pretty cool to be able to see them inside the car working the steering wheel. They also got to Qualify, which was also a first for this class at SFCR. Burch Fencing put up added money to the purse, and a $100 bonus to the 8th fastest qualifier.

21 cars signed in, and when Qualifying was over, it was the 13 of Kodi Savage who set a fast time of 14.978 seconds around the bullring. He was the only car in the 14 second range. The R7 of Randy Forster was 8th fastest and collected the $100 bonus.

Eddie Gross in car #4g won the first Heat Race over the 29 of Dusty Homan and the 13 of Kodi Savage.

The 147 of Kyle Stolzer won Heat Race 2 over the 10x of Kyle Jarrett and the 4m of Scott Jarrett.

Lou Driemeier (3D) was the winner of Heat Race 3, beating the 99 of Chuck Adams and the 1 of Shane Blair to the line.

Feature time was special. Not just because these guys were about to race for a sweet $1,000 paycheck… It was special for a couple reasons. You see, there was a special checkered flag up in the flag stand that would be waved at the end of this race. Even more special was the little guy that was going to present the winner of this race with the famous “Cowboy Hat”. Remember at the start of this when we were talking about Braxton? This was all about him. Throughout the night, a brand new authentic checkered flag made it’s way through the pit area collecting autographs from as many drivers as possible. That flag was taken to the flag stand and was to be used one time and one time only – for this race.

The field rolls out for the Topless 20, the cars line up, and the green flag flys. At the end of the 20 Laps, it was the 4G of Eddie Gross who found the winners circle, followed by the 13 of Kodi Savage, and the 1 of Shane Blair. Kyle Jarrett finished 4th in the 10x and Mark Crady 5th in car 70.

The Flagman rolled up the “Special” checkered flag and passed it down to victory lane. Braxton found a seat on the hood of Eddie Gross’s car, and presented Eddie with the Cowboy Hat. Eddie is well known for being a heck of a good guy with a huge heart, and at this particular time, the win didn’t seem to matter to him very much. Eddie presented Braxton with a “Gross 4G” T-Shirt and the race trophy and they talked and took some pictures together. And when the celebration photos were done, the “Special” Autographed checkered flag was given to Braxton to take home with him. Jaden Helvey also gave him an autographed race helmet visor that she had won earlier in the night.

So, it was a great night at The Bullring. For info on events coming up for Braxton, go to “Be Brave For Braxton” on Facebook. Lots of stuff coming up.

Make plans to join us this week, Saturday July 25th, as the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series and the POWRi Speedway Motors Outlaw Micro Series joins our regular classes for what’s going to be an AWESOME night of racing! Also, 410 Sprints will be racing for $2,000 to Win! This is going to be a HUGE, Action Packed night at The Fastest Bullring in Missouri! You don’t want to miss it!!

General Admission – $15, kids 12 & under FREE!
