St. Francois County Raceway, 8-15-2015 Race Recap

After a two week break, St. Francois County Raceway came alive once again Saturday Night, and it was one of our monthly $5 nights! And we were blessed to have Miss Carlei Huff with us! It was awesome to see her in good spirits and her smile light the whole place up! She received a very warm welcome and a standing ovation from fans and drivers on both sides of the track. Fans had the opportunity to check out a couple of the cars and meet the drivers as they came in the front gate before the races started, as Joey Boyd had his #67 Sprint Car and Jeremy Welborn had his ‪#‎27w‬ B-Modified on display.

So, during a two week break, a number of things can happen. In some instances, the car may have been working great so they just leave it loaded on the trailer and don’t touch it at all. Others may have the approach of trying a minor adjustment here or there and when it’s all said and done, they’ve ended up throwing everything but the kitchen sink at it. And then there are the ones that just sit and think… reflecting back on each race, how it went, who did what…. So the first night back from a long break always brings a little additional excitement, and that was no different this time, resulting in the ‘ol Black Flag making more appearances than a Chevelle at a gas station.

The unusually low car count plague struck once again in the Pure Street division, but the cars that did show up put on some excellent racing. Viburnum, Missouri’s Robert Hicks #32, ended the first Heat Race with the checkered flag in his hand, and the ‪#‎43x‬ of Robbie Williams would do the same in Heat Race 2. The win that everyone wanted though, went to the #94 of Jason Neel. He parked it in victory lane, with #43x Robbie Williams finishing 2nd and #71 Joe Merritt finishing 3rd.

Mike Savage was once again pulling double-duty, racing in both Modified classes. Savage (#05) picked up the win in the first of three B-Mod Heat Races. #29 Dusty Homan won Heat 2, and #1 Shane Blair won Heat 3. Homan landed his #29 car in the winners circle, picking up the Feature win, followed by S. Blair and Savage.

Kasey Nations (#26) was your winner in the first A-Mod Heat. Billy “The Kidd” Smith brought back the familiar #14 after running one of his bosses cars for the last few weeks, and picked up the win in Heat 2. Danny Resinger (#15) picked up the Dash win, earning him the “pole” starting position for the Feature, but at the end of the feature, it was Smith #14 with the win, followed by the ‪#‎25s‬ of Mike Savage and the #53 of Matt Eaton.

The social-media fire was re-ignited almost immediately during the Sprint car portion of the racing program. Some claim cheating, some claim luck, and some claim that it’s statistically impossible. Either way, the ‪#‎12x‬ of Joey Montgomery found the front of the first Heat Race and went on to win it. The #67 of Joey Boyd picked up the win in Heat 2, and the ‪#‎16g‬ of Scottie Gretzmacher was the winner of Heat 3. Boyd would go on to win the Dash and claim the captain’s seat for the start of the A-Main. After 25 laps of intense racing and tempers flaring throughout the field, it was the #12x of Joey Montgomery in victory lane, followed by the #97 of Tommy Worley Jr, and the #44 of AJ Bruns.

The 16 Checkered Flags and the 4 Black Flag recipients weren’t the only entertainment of the night though. Intermission events had some of these “wild and crazy” or “bad to the bone” racecar drivers competing against one-another in different way. Pink Hula-Hoops. That’s right, Pink Hula-Hoops. Sprint Car Driver Scottie Gretzmacher beat out A-Mod drivers Billy “The Kidd” Smith and Chuck Huff and B-Mod Drivers Mark Crady and Randy Forster and was nearly crowned the Hula-Hoop Champion, until a little girl came out of the grandstands and showed everyone why she should be the next contestant on America’s Got Talent and win a Million bucks and a show in Vegas. Scottie wasn’t so hottie when she got done. But it was all good fun, and these drivers along with many others passed their helmets thru the stands collecting donations for a young local race fan who is battling some tough medical issues, Christopher Armstrong. Many SFCR Drivers are well known for teaming up and helping out when it comes to people in need, especially children. You’ll see exactly what I mean this week, as many of these drivers are coming to participate in the Be Brave for Braxton Benefit, an event to be held Saturday August 22nd from 10am-4pm at the racetrack. We would like for the whole community to come out and meet these guys, and show your support for 5yr old Braxton Gross and his family!
