A former Lucas Cattle Company ULMA Champion and a driver gunning for this year’s championship shared the spotlight over the weekend as drivers competed at Callaway Raceway in Fulton, Missouri on Friday where Todd McCoin claimed his first win of the year. On Saturday at Central Missouri Speedway (CMS), Jason Bodenhamer returned to ULMA victory lane for his 31st career victory and his first since last taking the checkered flag at CMS on September 6, 2014.

For McCoin it was his second-career ULMA win after last taking the checkered flag at Double XX Speedway on July 13, 2014. Fourteen competitors made their way to Callaway Raceway just outside of Fulton, Missouri for the final week of competition and the awarding of track champions. McCoin also was celebrated as the 2015 Track Champion, his first-ever championship.

For the main event, McCoin’s drive to victory was not an easy one as several drivers at one point or another showed they had what it took to get to the winner’s circle. Although his final finish of 12th doesn’t tell the full story, it appeared for a while that Dustin Hodges might take his third win of the year. Justin Russell of Henley, Missouri ran another solid race and came away the runner-up while Cody Holtcamp made another appearance and grabbed third. Chris Cox racked up yet another Callaway Raceway top five in fourth position followed by Jon Melloway in fifth.

Rounding out the top ten in the final rundown were Terry Gallaher, Phil Edmondson, David Melloway, Ashley Lancaster, and David Miller. The race season is now completed at the track for the 2015 season. For off-season news and information visit the track online at www.callawayraceways.com.

At Central Missouri Speedway on Saturday, 19 competitors were on hand for three preliminary heat races with victories going to Jon Melloway, Steve Clancy, and John O’Neil. For the main event, current Lucas Cattle Company ULMA point’s leader Jon Melloway of Hallsville, Missouri started the 20-lap ULMA feature on pole with many time CMS late model feature winner Steve Clancy to his outside. John O’Neal and Cody Holtkamp started just behind in row two.

Melloway quickly shot out to an early race lead ahead of Clancy just as John O’Neal experienced an early spin to draw a restart on the field. O’Neal had to go tailback for the complete restart and once the field returned to action, Melloway held a close but comfortable lead over Holtkamp and Todd McCoin. A second quick caution appeared on the field for Gage Wineland as two-time CMS Late Model champion Kevin Coyne’s retired to the infield with mechanical problems.

Melloway held the point up front with Holtkamp, Jason Bodenhamer and Todd McCoin, all giving chase. McCoin was looking for his second ULMA victory of the weekend after taking the checkers and track championship at Callaway Raceway on Friday. Dave Miller drew a quick caution not long after with McCoin now making his way to second behind Melloway.

McCoin moved his way to the front of the field with a solid restart dropping Melloway to second and in the clutches of Bodenhamer and Bobby Penney from his eighth starting position. Just past the mid-point of the event, Jason Bodenhamer moved his way into second with Mellow, Penney, and a steady rolling John O’Neal fighting his way back to the top five.

It looked like McCoin might make it two in a row as he led through lap 16 until a late caution flew for Bobby Penney with a spin in turn four. On the restart, Bodenhamer made a lane for himself on the middle to high side to grab the lead with just a few laps remaining while McCoin drifted back to second position.

The final few laps were all Bodenhamer’s to lead as he beat McCoin to the line for his 24th overall victory at the track. McCoin finished a strong second after a valiant run while O’Neal put on a driver’s clinic to return to the top three by race end after his earlier spin. Melloway settled for fourth while Jon Binning came on strong late in the event to round out the top five.

Also finishing in the top ten were Holtkamp, Gage Wineland, Phil Edmondson, with a comeback to finish in eighth with Steve Clancy ninth and Wesley Briggs tenth. ULMA Late Models return for one final CMS appearance this season on Saturday, September 5th during the track’s annual Labor Day weekend special.
