(Warrensburg, MO) Near perfect weather combined with a multi-lane racing surface and a talented group of drivers on hand made for a classic night of action for fans in the stands who witnessed the USRA Modifieds, Street Stocks, B-Mods, and Pure Stocks compete on KRLI and KAOL Radio race night at CMS.

Saturday night served as the final championship points-earning night for the Street Stock, B-Mod, and Pure Stock divisions. The USRA Modifieds also competed for track points and will also compete for track and national USRA Modified points next weekend when the track hosts its annual two-day special event over the Labor Day weekend.

Pure Stocks opened the Saturday race program with a pair of heat races. Darrin Christy crossed the finish line first for his seventh heat win this year over Don Johnson and Roger Detherage. Heat race two was action packed with Derek Williams grabbing his third heat win of the year over Jason Ballard and Byron Glotzbach.

B-mods rolled out next for their three preliminary heat races. Cody Frazon of LaMonte, Missouri claimed heat one for his seventh heat victory ahead of Jason Billups and Ernie Walker. Troy Carlyle of Kearney, Missouri drove to his eighth heat win of the year over Bill Small and Rodney Schweizer. The final B-mod heat went to Brett Wood for his second heat win ahead of point’s leader Jacob Ebert in second and Olen Stephens.

Heat races continued with the Street Stocks for a pair of preliminary events. Last week’s feature winner, Jay Prevete of Windsor, Missouri took the checkers in heat one ahead of Clayton Campbell and Gary Akers. For heat two, Troy Turley of Knob Noster, Missouri captured his fourth heat win over Joshua Guy and Zack Smith.

In the opening USRA Modified heat, Gunner Martin of Independence, Missouri rolled to his sixth heat victory by crossing the finish line in front of Tim Karrick and Brian Johnson. Jim Moody of Odessa, Missouri dominated heat two with his fifth win of the season ahead of Jason Bodenhamer and Lewis Jackson. The final preliminary heat of the night saw Kevin Blackburn of Fulton, Missouri beating Ronnie Woods and Nick Pence to the finish.

After the intermission break, the main events rolled onto the speedway with the Pure Stocks returning for their 10-lap event. Point’s leader Jeremiah Wilson elected to start at the tail of the field. Darrin Christy and Derek Williams started the main event up front with Christy leading early with heavy pressure from sixth-starting Byron Glotzbach on the high side.

A yellow flag appeared early on in the event to slow the pace. On the restart, Christy led Glotzbach and Wilson inside the top three. By lap four, Glotzbach switched lines and grabbed the lead with Christy and Williams left to battle for second. By lap five, Wilson made his way to the top six. Williams then tried to stay with Glotzbach as Johnson, Detherage, Christy and Wilson battled for a top-five spot.

On lap seven, Jason Ballard had a hard hit with the front stretch wall and although he was unhappy with the situation, the driver was okay. For the restart, Glotzbach was the leader with Wilson, Johnson, Christy, and Detherage inside the top five.

Derek Williams of Higginsville, Missouri came to life on the restart and grabbed the lead from Detherage coming for the white flag. Detherage also moved forward in the closing laps. In the end, Williams secured his first-ever CMS victory ahead of Glotzbach, Detherage, Johnson, Christy, and Wilson who advanced to sixth.

Troy Carlyle and Cody Frazon set sail from the front row of the 15-lap B-Mod feature with Carlyle quickly assuming the lead ahead of Frazon, Brett Wood, and Jacob Ebert. A string of early caution flags appeared through the first four laps before drivers settled into a race rhythm.

Up front, Carlyle maintained his lead through the restarts with heavy pressure from Frazon, in search of a main-event win. Ebert and Wood also had an intense battle for third behind the lead pair. The next several laps were action-packed with battles for position all throughout the field.

The final three laps of the event saw Carlyle and Frazon breakaway from the battle for third as Ebert was able to maintain his position in front of Wood who remained fourth. Frazon searched high and low for a way around Carlyle but in the end had to settle for the runner-up spot behind Carlyle as he secured his third win of the year. Behind Frazon in second was Jacob Ebert followed by Brett Wood, Jason Billups, and Bill Small.

The Street Stock main event began with Troy Turley and Jay Prevete showing the way until an early race yellow flew for Kyle Guy, who had stopped in the hot lane on the back stretch. At lap one after the restart; Turley led Prevete, Campbell, Joshua Guy, and Gary Akers inside the top five.

When the field came back around for lap two, Brett Wood had a hard hit with the front-stretch wall and while the car was heavily damaged, Wood let the fans and family know he was okay. When the race resumed, Turley led Campbell, Prevete, Akers, and Brian Inlow with two laps down.

As Campbell and Prevete raced hard for second, Turley built up a fairly sizeable lead over both drivers. Meanwhile, Chad Eickleberry made his way to the top five just behind Joshua Guy by lap five. For the remaining laps, Turley, Campbell, and Prevete were evenly matched and began to pull away from the rest of the field behind them.

In the race’s late stages, Turley had his #2 Street Stock hooked up to carry the race through to the checkers despite Campbell putting heavy pressure on him in several attempts to grab the lead. However, at the finish it was Turley picking up his first win of the year by inches at the line. Prevete ran third with Guy, Akers, and Chad Eickleberry rounding out the top six.

Kevin Blackburn and Gunner Martin led the field of ‘Mighty’ Modifieds to the initial green flag for the final main event of the night with previous main event winners Jim Moody and Tim Karrick close behind them. After a pair of early race cautions slowed the field. Lewis Jackson and Danny Scrogham were early retirees from the event.

One of the early cautions involved Brian Johnson, who received two flat tires during the second caution flag. Johnson reported to the infield hot pit area with several crew members from various teams lending a hand to change both left side flats. Johnson made it back out in time to rejoin the field at the back of the pack when racing resumed.

For the next 10 laps drivers were able to maneuver just about anywhere they wanted in search of advancing through the field. Tim Karrick of Basehor, Kansas ran strong to reel in Blackburn and began pressuring him for the lead along with Moody in the early laps. Jason Bodenhamer joined the drivers up front and also began to come forward.

With Blackburn fading just a bit both Karrick and Moody made the pass on the Fulton, Missouri driver to take over first and second from him. Bodenhamer also shot past Blackburn making for a tight battle near the top of the running order. Terry Beckham pulled off shortly after a quick yellow flag for Steve Twenter slowed the field for a lap-twelve restart, Twenter was unable to restart when racing resumed.

Karrick held the lead with Moody and Bodenhamer just behind him for the second half of the race, which was just as exciting as the first half of the event. Moody searched for a way around Karrick over the next several laps as the leaders threaded their way through some of the lapped cars.

The top five wasn’t the only place for close competition though as Gunner Martin and Blackburn raced hard to stay within reach of the leaders. Ronnie Woods of Mexico, Missouri, Kyle Covert, Nick Pence along with Tad Davis all had solid runs inside the top ten. Later in the race Brian Johnson was making his way back up through the field after his earlier visit to the hot pit area. Terry Beckham and Luke Feeback were early retirees at this point in the event.

On lap 20, Moody really began to put the pressure on Karrick for the lead but coming off turn two and turn four Karrick carried his strong momentum out of the turns to maintain his lead despite Moody’s repeated attempts to take command.

In the end, Karrick triumphed for his third main-event win of the year and first since late spring. Moody had to settle for second on this night with Bodenhamer coming away with another solid run inside the top three. Gunner Martin held on to fourth with hard-charging Brian Johnson making his way back to the top five in the closing laps for fifth. Blackburn, Woods, Pence, Tad Davis, and Covert rounded out the top ten.
