(Warrensburg, MO) A warm late summer evening greeted race fans and drivers on a competitive night of racing at Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) for championship race night in three divisions. Season track championships were earned by Jeremiah Wilson from Concordia in the Pure Stocks, Jacob Ebert from Oak Grove in the B-Mods, and Brett Wood from Warrensburg in the Street Stock division.
Byron Glotzbach from Topeka, Kansas claimed his first Pure Stock feature win of the year. Luke Nieman from Nortonville, Kansas drove his machine into B-mod victory lane for the first time this year. Jon Binning from Warrensburg rolled to his second ULMA Late Model victory of the season. Brett Wood also from Warrensburg secured his second-straight Street Stock championship with another feature win. Jim Moody closed out the night with another special-event win as he drove to victory lane for the $1,500 USRA Modified win.
Pure Stocks started off the weekly heat racing action to place drivers into their individual feature starting spots when Roger Detherage won his first heat with and Darrin Christy following. In heat 2, Jeremiah Wilson claimed the win with Dylan McDonald and Jason Cochran trailing.
Byron Glotzbach grabbed the lead after working past Wilson, who was the Pure Stock early race leader. Once Glotzbach made his way to the front there was no looking back for the Kansas driver as he cruised to his first-ever CMS main-event win. Detherage looked strong early on and finished second, Christy followed in third, Wilson came away fourth and Dylan McDonald moved up from the back row to claim fifth.
A strong field of 25 B-Mod drivers checked into the pits in for weekly competition with four heat races to set the feature starting grid. Luke Nieman grabbed heat one over Eddie Bray, Jr., and Scotty Martin. Heat two saw champion Jacob Ebert claim the win over Terry Wilburn and Ryan Edde. The third heat had Cody Frazon ahead of Troy Carlyle and Brett Wood and in the final heat Dean Truelove captured his first win of the year in front of Johnny McGinnis and Bill Smalls.
The B-Mod drivers funneled out of the pits onto the track for their 15-lap event to see if someone could break the hold Jacob Ebert has on the feature wins in this division. Ebert grabbed the early feature lead as he rolled out of turn two ahead of Nieman with Carlyle stalking the top driver. After several cautions, Nieman and Carlyle battled for the lead with side-by-side racing throughout the race.
In one of the most exciting finishes of the year, Nieman and Carlyle split the difference on the final turn around lapped traffic with Nieman riding the cushion on the high side of turn four and claiming his first-ever CMS feature event. Carlyle was a close second while Ebert finished up his championship season in third place while Bray and Martin rounded out the top five.
The United Late Model Association (ULMA) returned to Warrensburg for their fourth visit this season. In the opening heat race Jon Melloway captured the win ahead of Bob King and Lane Ehlert. Jon Binning worked past Todd McCoin and Josh Poe and grabbed the win in heat two while former Modified track champion Aaron Marrant quickly got the feel of a late model and drove to the win in heat three ahead of Jason Bodenhamer and Bobby Penny to set up the starting line-up for the 20 lap feature event.
Unfortunately, Marrant’s machine lost power as the cars made their way to the speedway for the main event and he was unable to start the event, leaving Binning and Bodenhamer up front. Binning flew out of turn two with the lead at the start of the event while several drivers including Bodenhamer, Melloway, Bob King and Josh Poe were close by in the top six as the low side of the track started to come in.
Quickly picking up on the changing track conditions, Bodenhamer challenged Binning repeatedly and ultimately took the lead midway through the race. It looked like Bodenhamer would cruise to his second-straight ULMA victory; however, shortly after assuming the lead his Wesley Briggs-owned #7 ride began billowing heavy smoke and he was forced out of the event.
Binning moved back out front after Bodenhamer’s demise and went on to capture his second ULMA win at CMS this year. Cody Holtcamp powered his way up through the field and finished in second spot in front of another strong run by Lane Ehlert who made his way to third. Jon Melloway was fourth with another former Modified driver, Josh Poe, finishing fifth.
Street Stock drivers had another chance to claim a weekly feature victory with a trio of heat races. Brett Wood smoothly drove to victory in heat one over Brian Ziegler and Troy Turley. Jay Prevete pulled away and claimed the second heat race ahead of Brian Inlow and Josh Guy while Clayton Campbell rolled to victory in heat three ahead of Chad Eickleberry and Dwayne Mitchell.
For the main event, Wood and Campbell raced to turn one to see who would come out on top and as he’s done several times this season, Wood led the event after the first lap. Campbell comfortably sat in the second spot with Ziegler joining the Campbell in search of a way forward as he made several early race passes to advance to the top three.
Wood kept his championship drive going with a dominating performance by race end threading his way through lapped cars with Campbell and Ziegler doing all they could to keep pace. In the end, Wood led the talented field of Street Stock drivers to a green to checkered flag finish in one of the fastest events of the night. Campbell held strong for a solid second-place run with Ziegler finishing out the night in third. Jay Prevete registered another top-five run with Troy Turley capping off a solid points year to round out the top five at the finish.
A solid field of 28 USRA Modified drivers competed in four preliminary heat races to setup the starting grid for their 35-lap $1,500 to-win feature purse. Tyler Schmidt won in convincing fashion in heat one with Jason Bodenhamer and Jeremy Chambers in tow. Kevin Blackburn was on top of the finish in heat two ahead of Brian Johnson and Gunner Martin. The third heat went to Colson Kirk followed by Nick Pence and Matt Dotson. The final heat of the night went to Jim Moody ahead of Rick Beebe and Jared Rogers.
A full field of 26 drivers filed out for their featured event, the first of two $1,500-to-win special events on the weekend. After a series of early race cautions, Tyler Schmidt grabbed the top spot with Moody and Bodenhamer in close pursuit. Former USRA Modified Champion Matt Dotson was involved in one of the early caution periods but was able to restart the event in pursuit of racing his way back to the front. Shad Badder and Rick Beebe were early retirees from the event after posting strong finishes in earlier heat race action.
With a lightning quick and maneuverable track, Moody eventually caught Schmidt as the pair waged a torrid battle for the top spot. Schmidt’s care appeared to be a little too free coming off the corners and as a result there was just enough opening for Moody to grab the lead by lap ten. Not long after Moody assumed the lead, a broken drive shaft on top-five running Jason Bodenhamer’s car in between turns one and two led to a multi-car accident before Bodenhamer could bring his car to the infield out of harm’s way.
Unfortunately, several drivers running inside the top 10 were unable to avoid the accident as a red flag was brought out to separate the cars. Aaron Marrant, Tad Davis, Jeremy Rogers, Tim Karrick, were among those involved. David Wood had one of his strongest runs of the year going shortly before the incident but he took the hardest hit in the accident. Despite being understandably upset about the incident, he was okay after his car received major damage.
Marrant and Davis were forced to retire after the incident but Karrick and Rogers reported to the infield hot pit area and after several crew members pitched in, both drivers were able rejoined the event. Once the race resumed Moody was on turbo mode as he quickly distanced himself from the outstanding battle for second between Schmidt, Brian Johnson, Jeremy Chambers and Lewis Jackson.
Lap-after-lap Moody began to thread his way through some of the lapped machines leaving the rest of the drivers to sort things out behind him. Brian Johnson masterfully made his way inside the top three with Schmidt doing all he could to keep the 66t machine in front. Meanwhile, Matt Dotson was the man on the charge as he methodically climbed his back into the top five!
Track and National USRA point’s leader Terry Schultz experienced mechanical gremlins with a reported broken cam in the heat race but was able to jump into Steve Twenter’s car, which had qualified into the main event by virtue of the heat races, and salvage a solid finish by the end of the race.
In the closing laps Moody’s lead diminished a little bit but it wasn’t enough for Schmidt and Dotson to catch the eventual winner as he crossed the finish line for his second special-event win of the season after claiming the $5,000 payday last July. Dotson’s impressive charge back to the front was exciting right to the finish as he captured second just feet in front of Johnson at the line for second.
After a strong night, Brian Johnson recorded yet another solid finish in third while Schmidt was able to turn his season around with a solid fourth-place run. Parsons, Kansas driver Jeremy Chambers had an outstanding run to the fifth position while fellow Kansan Lewis Jackson settled for sixth. Danny Scrogham, Terry Schultz, Jake Brewer, and Luke Feeback rounded out the top ten.

On Sunday, USRA Modifieds return for another $1,500 to-win special event with the track Championship points on the line. Both Modified and B-mod drivers must be USRA Members to compete or purchase the $10 USRA temporary license at the track. B-Mods will compete for USRA national points only as track points ended Saturday.

CMS is located just past the round-a-bout on Hwy 13 three and a half miles north of Warrensburg, Missouri from the junction of Highways 50 and 13. From the Interstate 70 Higginsville/Warrensburg Hwy 13 exit, the track is located 12.5 miles south on Hwy 13.
