USRAKANSAS CITY, Kan.-After a one-hour rain delay to kick off the 2nd Annual USRA National Championships Thursday, more than 150 drivers in three classes circled the Lakeside Speedway for 266 laps in less than four hours, and three of those drivers emerged as opening night winners.

Just one week removed from clinching the USRA Modified track championship at the historic 4/10-mile oval in Kansas City, Kan., Kerry Davis of Parkville, Mo., parlayed a pole position starting spot into a victory in the 20-lap main event.

Davis battled with New Sharon, Iowa’s Zack VanderBeek from beginning to end, with VanderBeek eventually settling for the runner-up honors.

USRA Modified national points leader Terry Schultz of Sedalia, Mo., took a big step toward capturing the season title with a third-place finish while Lakeside Speedway legend Tim Karrick of Basehor, Kan., finished fourth ahead of last year’s USRA national champ, Fito Gallardo of Las Cruces, N.M., who started 16th on the grid.

In USRA Stock Car action, Jake Masters of Graettinger, Iowa, topped a caution-plagued “A” Main by holding off veteran Steve Jackson of Polk City, Iowa, who started 17th on the 24-car grid.

Kevin Anderson of Kansas City, Kan., collected ten USRA Stock Car checkers at Lakeside Speedway during the 2015 campaign, but settled for third in Thursday’s main event. Shawn Peter of Mabel, Minn., finished fourth and Todd Staley of Webster City, Iowa, rebounded from a lap-4 flat tire to claim the fifth spot.

Josh Stephens of Buckner, Mo., made a late-race pass of Ed Noll of Excelsior Springs, Mo., and then held off Logan Martin of West Plains, Mo., on the final lap to capture the win in the 20-lap USRA B-Mod feature race.

Noll, who locked up the Lakeside Speedway track championship six days ago, held on for a third-place finish with Luke Nieman of Nortonville, Kan., and Jacob Ebert of Oak Grove, Mo., rounding out the top five.

The 2nd Annual USRA National Championships continue Friday and Saturday, with USRA Hobby Stock joining the card beginning tomorrow.

Combined points earned for both Thursday and Friday nights (Friday only for USRA Hobby Stocks) will set the line-ups for Saturday.

On Saturday, USRA Modifieds, USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods will each be racing for $4,000 to win. USRA Hobby Stocks will race for $1,000 to win, and Saturday’s championship features will start three-wide in all four divisions.
