For Immediate Release-

Six years ago, a young sprint car driver named Jesse Hockett won his last race in a sprint car at a track he called home. Each year in May in his memory, the familiar confines of Double-X Speedway comes to life on a night dedicated to honor Jesse, and his cousin Daniel McMillan, with a special night filled with memories, stories and some exciting dirt track racing, all of this is done “Hockett Style”. The 2016 edition of the “Tribute to Jesse and Daniel” saw ASCS Sprint Car driver from four states in attendance along with a good field of cars in the support divisions. Adding to the excitement this year was the return of the “Take it to the tail challenge, Hockett style”. An event within the feature event allowing the ASCS Sprint Car drivers that were eligible to re-draw for their starting position to take their starting spot to the tail of the field just as Jesse Hockett did in his last race at Double-X. Another special feature added this year was the “Hockett Non Wing Challenge”.

The ASCS Warrior Region Winged Sprint Cars were the highlight on the card for the evening. Three qualifying heat races and a B Feature were used to set the field for the 25 lap main event. The first heat saw mid Missouri wheelman Corey Nelson claim the victory over Randy Martin, Jonathan Cornell and Raven Culp. Collinsville, Oklahoma’s Tyler Thomas claimed the second heat over Kyle Bellm, Wayne Johnson and Ryan Padgett. The third qualifying heat would see Mitchell Moore pick up the victory over Evan Martin, Cody Baker and Chris Morgan. The B feature was contested to fill the remaining four spots for the main event. Tyler Blank took the victory over Miles Paulus, Lanny Carpenter and Lee Lengel joining Blank in transferring to the A Feature. A.J.Wirts, Ben Brown, Broc Elliott and John Manley completed the field.

The A Main event had an electric feel to it as the field shaped up for the green flag. Corey Nelson, the first driver in the re-draw, elected to “Take it to the Tail” and in turn set himself up to win a possible extra $2000 if he could win the event. After drawing the #1 pill, Jonathan Cornell found himself starting on the pole alongside another had charger Cody Baker. Baker would use the front row starting spot to his advantage as he went to the lead and would keep the Ted Hall #38 at the point until lap 5 when the familiar black 28 of Jonathan Cornell would take the point. After gaining five positions on the first 2 circuits, Corey Nelson found himself crossed up in turn 4 after a spin out. He would restart at the rear of the field. Cornell would continue his lead but he felt the challenge of veteran Wayne Johnson coming up on his rear bumper. Johnson would close to the rear of the Cornell machine but a mid race caution would prove to change the flow of the race as Cornell was able to change his line and keep the veteran driver at bay. At the checkered flag it was Cornell and Johnson 1-2 with Kyle Bellm finishing third, local veteran Randy Martin was fourth and Cody Baker crossed the stripe fifth. Evan Martin finished sixth, Chris Morgan claimed seventh, TJ Muths was eighth, Tyler Blank advanced from 16th to finish ninth and Mitchell Moore would round out the top ten.

A new event this year, the “Hockett Non Wing Challenge”, was organized by Jesse’s dad Jack Hockett and was open to any sprint car drivers in attendance that wished to participate. Eleven drivers made the call to the green flag with Lanny Carpenter and Jeff Wingate pacing the field. Carpenter, the winningest non wing driver at Double-X, would take the lead at the outset and would hold his advantage by running the low line. Mitchell Moore, TJ Muths, Tyler Blank and Kyle Bellm were battling furiously behind the leader lap after lap. Blank would take his #75 Sprinter to the top side of the track to move into second on lap 6 and would overtake Carpenter on lap 8 and go the distance to claim the checkered flag. Carpenter finished a strong second, Muths claimed third, Clinton Boyles starting last in the grid found himself in fourth at the end and Kyle Bellm would finish fifth.

The Street Stock division saw a familiar name, Henson, claim the victory in the feature event, however this time it was older brother Derek Henson claiming the win. By virtue of winning his heat race, Henson started pole position alongside veteran Joe Miller. Henson would lead from the green flag with Miller giving early chase. Hard charging Dale Berry would overtake Miller for the two spot on lap seven with John Clancy passing Miller for third two laps later. Meanwhile Henson maintained a consistent lead of 2-3 car lengths. At the checkered flag Henson was followed by Berry, Clancy, Cole Henson and Miller in the top five. Harlan Dowell, James Keeran, Kenny Riegel, Destiny Dowell and Steve Beach rounded out the top ten. Derek Henson and Joe Miller claimed the heat race victories.

Eighteen 600cc Micro Sprints checked in for the evenings competition with some familiar faces and new drivers in attendance. At the completion of the 20 lap feature event, third generation open wheel driver Ayrton Gennetten found himself in victory lane. Gennetten was chased the entire distance by double duty driver Miles Paulus who had to settle for second. Jack Wagner claimed third, Jackson Frisbie finished fourth and Jimmy Dowell was fifth. Kyle Schlotz, Braydon Cromwell, Nick Rasa, Marty Ballenger and John Bernhardt rounded out the top ten. Gennetten and Dowell claimed the heat race wins.

The Hobby Stock class was few in number but may have provided the most exciting finish of the evening. Following a lap 10 caution, Rudy Wirts found himself third behind veterans Mike Schrader and Chuck Coffey. By going to the outside at the checkered flag, Wirts was able to claim the victory by half a car over Schrader who narrowly edged Coffey. Jeremiah Wallingford would finish fourth and Laura Atkinson finished fifth. Atkinson claimed the heat race earlier in the evening.

The ASCS Warrior Sprint Cars have three more dates scheduled at Double-X in 2016, culminated by the 14th annual Clyde Wood Memorial Race on Sunday July 24th. Double-X speedway was also pleased to welcome all of the drivers and fans who were in attendance Sunday night. Some notable visitors for the evening’s events were Brian Hulbert from ASCS and Tony Bokhoven, the voice of Knoxville Raceway. Again, a big thanks to everyone who came out and supported the 2016 edition of the “Tribute to Jesse and Daniel” at Double X Speedway.
