(Warrensburg, MO) Sizzling temperatures settled in over Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) on Saturday but even hot weather couldn’t slow down the 82 drivers on hand for competition in the USRA Modified, Street Stock, Midwest Mod-Lite, B-Mod, and Pure Stock divisions for Budweiser race night.

Byron Glotzbach of Topeka, Kansas started the night off strong with a win in Pure Stock heat race #1 with Rodger Detherage second and Don Johnson close behind in third. Darrin Christy took the checkers in heat two over Scott Martin and Jeremiah Wilson to set the stage for the Pure Stock main event.

For their featured event, Pure Stocks took the green with Christy and Glotzbach showing the way. A quick yellow flew over the field on lap one with Christy leading Detherage, Glotzbach, Johnson, and Martin for the restart. The field raced to the green flag once again with five more laps in the books as Christy continued to lead a persistent Glotzbach followed by Detherage, Wilson, and Don Johnson. The third and final yellow flag period waived on the track a lap later as Christy held the point.

As the race wound down, Glotzbach challenged Christy time-and-time again but each time ‘The Bear’ kept Glotzbach’s 59 car behind him. On the final restart, Christy brought the field to the green flag and kept his car out front for the final laps with Glotzbach second, Detherage third, and Wilson fourth. Don Johnson crossed the line fifth while Scott Martin recorded his best finish of the year in sixth.

USRA B-Mods were up next in the program as 17 drivers on hand competed in five heat races. Former feature winner Tim Powell of Lansing, Kansas drove to the win over Luke Nieman and Chris Brockway in heat one. Urbana, Missouri’s Ryan Edde claimed the win in heat two over Curtis Berry, and Dean Wille. Jacob Ebert drove to the win in the final heat in front of Bobby Russell and Chris Kitch.

For the USRA B-Mod main event, a quick restart was ordered when the race began with Jacob Ebert leading a pair of Lakeside Speedway regulars Tim Powell and Brad Smith. Through some early caution periods, Ebert came out on top and kept all pursuers behind him. As the laps clicked off, Powell hounded Ebert searching for a way around but was unable to make a bid for the lead as Ebert maintained his edge through each passing lap. In the end, Ebert held on to claim another feature victory. Powell finished a strong second with Kaleb Bray recording his best finish of the season in third. Ryan Edde made his long haul pay off with a strong run to fourth. Dean Wille came away with a top five in fifth position while Bobby Russell rebounded from an earlier caution to round out the top six.

Midwest Mod Lites made their second CMS appearance of the year with 13 drivers on hand. Michael Raffurty advanced from third to first to claim the opening heat race over John Sharp and Travis Alexander. For heat two, former CMS regular Donnie Dannar claimed the win ahead of David Raffurty and Ed Griggs.

Michael Raffurty led the 15-lap main event from the start of the race with Dannar, Sharp, and David Raffurty in tow. When Mod-Lites raced at CMS earlier this season Ed Griggs took the checkers. If Griggs was to make it two in a row, he needed to advance from seventh on the grid, a tough task with some strong competitors on hand who had their own plans for finding victory lane.

Michael Raffurty led early in the race with David Raffurty and Dannar close behind. As Mod-Lites continued a blistering pace, Michael Raffurty did what he needed to do and kept all pursuers behind him. Just past the halfway point, Griggs began to make his move and sailed from fourth to second eating away at Michael Raffurty’s lead right up to the final lap. Despite Griggs’ valiant bid for the win, it was not enough to keep Michael Raffurty from claiming the win. In victory lane Raffurty said it was only his fifth time behind the wheel of this car. Griggs drove his #47 Mod-Lite to second with Danner third and Justin Raffurty, who started tail back finishing fourth. David Raffurty rounded out the top five in fifth with Tony Kerr crossing the line in sixth.

Fifteen Street Stock drivers competed in three preliminary heat races for the night with Brett Wood outgunning Clayton Campbell and Troy Turley for the win. New driver Johnny Wyman of Fulton, Missouri claimed heat number two over Jay Prevete and Gary Akers. Fresh off his double-feature win one week before, Brian Ziegler took the win in heat three ahead of Brian Inlow and Rob Hardwick.

The 15-lap Street Stock main was another wild one with a completely unexpected outcome as leaders encountered problem after problem. Ziegler shot out to an early race lead with Wood and Inlow close behind until lap three, when Wood blasted down to the low side of turn four and claimed the top spot. A lap three restart ended up with several of the lead cars involved in a multicar accident that ended the night for Ziegler and resulted in Wood and Campbell restarting at the tail of the field while Wyman, Prevete, and Zach Smith, who suffered an injury to his hand but was otherwise okay, all retired to the pits.

Brian Inlow became the race leader and led several green-flag laps as Belton, Missouri’s Allen Perryman hounded the leader by putting heavy pressure on the leader on the low side. Perryman grabbed the lead inside of five laps remaining but Inlow didn’t let the new leader out of site. However, Perryman, who was second in last week’s main event one-upped that finish by claiming his first checkered flag in several years when he crossed the line first from last on the grid. Inlow recorded his strongest run of the year in second with Clayton Campbell, Troy Turley, Bobby Wood, and Rob Hardwick completing the top six.

A strong field of 26 USRA Modifieds highlighted the night’s competition with four heat races and a 25-lap main event for drivers on hand. Point’s leader Kevin Blackburn took the first Modified heat of the night over Nathan Vaughn and Kyle Covert. Matt Dotson, who recently won both Memorial Day weekend USRA Modified main events at CMS, crossed the line first in heat two over Terry Schultz and a returning Dalton Kirk. Gunner Martin drove to the win in head three over Dean Bachner and Danny Scrogham while Brian Johnson finished ahead of Jim Moody and Justin Johnson in the fourth and final heat of the night.

Twenty-five of the 26 drivers originally on hand took the green flag for the USRA Modified main event with Gunner Martin and Matt Dotson showing the way. Martin quickly assumed command of the main event with Dotson, Brian Johnson, and Kevin Blackburn close behind.

A multi-car incident in turns one and two slowed the field early in the race with some cars receiving damage from the incident but after reporting to the hot pit for crews to make repairs were able to return to the event. Martin took off from the lead when the race resumed as he and Matt Dotson looked more like drag racers with several laps of side-by-side action before Martin eventually prevailed by lap twelve. Martin continued to lead the event through a couple more caution periods as Blackburn brought himself up into the mix just past the race’s halfway point.

Blackburn’s car resembled something more of a space rocket on the next restart as he flew from third to first in a matter of seconds to lead the way over Dotson and Martin, who slipped to third in the lineup. By lap 15, Blackburn led Dotson, Terry Schultz, Martin, and Brian Johnson inside the top five. Schultz ran inside the top three through lap 20 but Martin rebounded and retook the spot behind Blackburn and Dotson out front.

On lap 21 it appeared Dotson was going to the front as he fought back on the low side with Blackburn preferring the high line, particularly off turn four. However, after Dotson retook the lead, a late-race caution flew over the field and Blackburn again led the way for the restart as the field was realigned going back to the last completed lap. Meanwhile, Dalton Kirk, who was making his first CMS appearance of the year fought back from being involved in one of the early cautions to race inside the top five. Up front, Blackburn and Dotson waged a classic battle for the win but on this occasion it was Blackburn who drove to the victory, his first at CMS of the year. Dotson crossed the line in second followed by Martin third, Kirk fourth, and Schultz inside the top five. Justin Johnson, also making his first appearance of the year, completed the top six.

Next week, ULMA Late Models join Pure Stocks, B-Mods, Street Stocks, and USRA Modifieds for KIX 105.7 FM Radio Race Night and Joslin’s Jewelry night at the races.
