When the ASCS Warrior Region rolls into Double-X Speedway the drivers know that they will have a handful trying to beat someone who has the track mastered. Drivers with names like Martin, Hockett and now Cornell have figured out what it takes to win at the friendly, tight quarter mile. Sunday night two of those names put on a driving display that was one for the books. Starting side by side after having the one and two pills drawn for them by young race fans at intermission, Jonathan Cornell and Randy Martin made up the front row for the 25 lap feature event. Given his recent success at the Double-X, many probably conceded the victory in easy fashion to Cornell, but someone forgot to mention that to the veteran Randy Martin. Starting in the outside of row one Martin would win the drag race into turn one and open a lead on the high side while Cornell gave chase running on the bottom. Lap after lap these two would be nose to tail or side by side. Cornell was able to mount several attempts at a slide job on Martin in turns three and four but was unable to clear his competitor and wisely kept his car low. Meanwhile behind these two, Kyle Bellm, and Tyler Blank were gaining on them with Bellm ultimately challenging Cornell for the number two spot on a few occasions. A caution just past the half way point bunched the field and Martin tried the low line in turn one on the restart while Cornell went high. This seemed to allow Cornell the momentum he need to pass the red #14 a lap later. Cornell would claim the victory with Martin in second, Bellm finishing a strong third, Blank would claim fourth and Evan Martin finished fifth. Jay Russell came home in sixth, Tyler Thomas was seventh, Corey Nelson finished eighth, Danny Thoman was ninth and Raven Culp completed the top ten. Heat races were claimed by Cornell, Thomas and Randy Martin. The ASCS Warrior Region will return to Double-X on Sunday July 3 as part of the Red, White and Blue Tour 2016.

The Super Stocks continue to keep the fans energized with the close racing in the class. At one point during the feature event the top six cars were racing in about a four car length pack. Heat race winners Harlan Dowell and Steve Beach led the field to the green with Beach earning the early lead. Beach would continue to primarily run the high groove while some major racing was going on behind him. Third starting Dean Willie, Clayton Campbell, Harlan Dowell and Cole Henson were waging battle for the remainder of the top five. Dowell would run second through lap six before Willie would claim the position. Campbell, Dowell and Dale Berry would continue the battles throughout the field. With Beach still leading, Willie would try the low line and the high line working to gain the advantage. Making the pass on the final lap, Dean Willie would claim the victory. Dale Berry crosses the stripe second, Beach was third, Cole Henson came home fourth and Clayton Campbell was fifth.

Austin Crane made his second visit to Double-X in 2016 and made it a good night as he claimed the feature event in the 600cc Micro Sprint Class. Point leader Kameron Key made Crane earn the victory by challenging the leaders for almost the entire event. Key would try high and low but could not mount a challenge for the victory. Following the cars of Crane and Key under the checkered flag were Tom Curran in third, Kyle Schlotz in fourth and Kaitlyn Boland completing the top five.

Chuck Coffey claimed his second victory of the season in the Hobby Stock division at Double-X. Mike Schrader pressured Coffey for the win but settled for second, Rudy Wirts was third and Jeremiah Wallingford was fourth. Coffey claimed the heat race.

Be sure to join us at Double-X Speedway for Sunday night Thunder, gates open at 5 and racing starts at 7:30.
