Hodges Keep Rolling While Fennewald Takes First ULMA Win on Eve of Triple Crown Shootout

Two Lucas Cattle Company ULMA tracks hosted drivers and fans last week for another weekend of racing on the road to the Tenth Anniversary ULMA Championship season. Dustin Hodges kept his hot streak alive with his fourth-consecutive win at Callaway Raceway in Fulton, Missouri while Johnny Fennewald captured his first-ever ULMA victory at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Missouri.

At Callaway Raceway on Friday night, Fulton, Missouri’s Dustin Hodges held off the association’s Iron Man Chris Cox of Jefferson City for his fourth win of the year. Hodges has turned up the wick over the past few weeks and as a result has assumed command of the oveall Lucas Cattle Company championship standings. Cox finished second on Friday evening with Cody Hotlkamp, Jon Melloway, Chris Cain, Ryan Petersheim, Darek Wiss, and Devan Wiss rounding out the field.

ULMA drivers have off this week at Callaway Raceway as the track has an open-wheel racing special event scheduled. ULMA action resumes at the raceway the following Friday for another week of championship racing on Friday, July 8th. Gates open at 5 with hot laps at 7 and racing at 7:30. At Lucas Oil Speedway, a solid field of 24 drivers made their way to the track for championship weekly racing. After the preliminary heat races, Chris Smyser of Lancaster, Missouri and former track champion Justin Russell led the field to the green flag for the main event. However, by the end of the race, it was a stand-out Modified driver who drove to victory lane from sixth on the starting grid as Appleton City, Missouri’s Johnny Fennewald claimed his first-ever ULMA victory.

Behind Fennewald in second was pole-sitter Chris Smyser, followed by four-time feature race winner Aaron Marrant, Bobby Penney, and Aaron Poe inside the top five. Completing the top ten were Chris Cox, Jon Binnign, Tommy Cordray, Cody Holtkamp, and Justin Russell.

Up next at Lucas Oil Speedway is Thursday Night Thunder, during with Lucas Cattle Company ULMA drivers can enter the annual Triple Crown Shootout as the Thursday race serves as the first of four-straight nites of action. As a reminder, there is no Saturday racing on July 2 at Lucas Oil Speedway. This week’s late model event at Lucas Oil Speedway pays $1,000 to win to the race-winning driver. The Jake Williams Memorial ‘Triple Crown Shootout’ presented by RacinDirt.com takes place this week during the Independence Day weekend. The special weekend honors late ULMA competitor Jake Williams, who tragically lost his life late last year. Williams is a former track champion at Lucas Oil Speedway. Dates for this year’s shootout include the opening event at Thursday, June 30 at Lucas Oil Speedway, Friday, July 1 at Lakeside Speedway, Saturday, July 2 at Randolph County Raceway, and Sunday, July 3 at Central Missouri Speedway.

All Triple Crown Shootout events will count towards the overall ULMA championship standings. Drivers entering the Triple Crown Shootout event will participate in a separate mini-points series bolstered by RacinDirt.com. Drivers must compete in at least three of the four events to be eligible for the separate prize fund money for the special event. If a driver competes in all four events, he gets to keep his best three finishes to count towards the special prize fund; however, all events that a driver participates in will count toward regular championship points for all participating licensed ULMA drivers.

For all ULMA events this season, drivers must possess a valid ULMA license or purchase the $10 temporary license while on site at each event. Drivers are highly encouraged to make their way to the ULMA website at www.ulmaracing.com and complete the licensing paperwork prior to checking in at weekend events, printing it out, and bringing it with them to the tracks they will race at this season. Drivers must be in compliance with ULMA Rules and Regulations as written.
