(Warrensburg, MO) The second of three and most anticipated big-money special-event of the year at Central Missouri Speedway is about to unfold over the Independence Day weekend during the Eleventh Annual Tom Wilson Memorial BBQ Bowl.
Two nights of action begin on Saturday, July 2nd and continue Sunday, July 3rd with various car classes. The weekend begins Saturday with two rounds of heat races for USRA Modifieds with the overall top six in combined heat race passing points locking themselves onto the inside positions of the first six rows. B-mod and Pure Stock drivers compete in their regular Saturday night championship points-earning events while Street Stock drivers gun for their annual $1,500-to-win, 25-lap special event. The Allstar Midget Series drivers return for their second CMS appearance of the year as the night’s guest class.
On Sunday, July 3rd. Modified drivers not able to lock themselves into the inside first six rows have another two rounds of heat races to compete in to sort out the top six in combined passing points for the outside starters of the first six rows, once the second night of heat races are complete, the first six rows of the 50-lap $5,000-to-win main event will be completed. All remaining cars not locked in will then compete in C-main and B-main events to sort out the final 12 drivers to fill rows 7 through 12 to complete the 24-car starting grid.
Sunday’s program also includes B-Mods competing under the USRA Banner for National USRA points but not track points (Saturday’s B-Mods are not USRA sanctioned). The ULMA Late Models return for a fourth time this season to CMS as the guest class of the night as they compete in the Jake Williams Memorial Triple Crown Shootout, it will be the fourth-straight night of action for late model drivers to end their annual event.
The final race of the night will be the 50-lap USRA Modified main event and after the victory lane celebration concludes the lights will go down and a full fireworks display will commence for those on hand. However, that’s not all as the CMS Party Barn will come to life for a second time this year with Karaoke and Music through the night with Char. Attendees are welcome to hang out after the races and sing the night away.
For both Saturday and Sunday’s events, Adult General Admission is $15, Military w/I.D. and Senior Citizens ages 65 to 74 years $12, Kids six to twelve years old $5. Children five and under and Seniors 75 years and older are free. Pit passes for the weekend are $35 each night.
Jim Moody is the defending winner of last year’s 50-lapper and he has momentum on his side after sweeping both the make-up main event and regular race program main event last week in the USRA Modifieds. With an incredible weekly average of 28 cars this season, CMS fans are treated to some close-quarters racing in the division each week. Shad Badder, Kevin Blackburn, Jimmy Eaton, Lewis Jackson, Tim Karrick, Dalton Kirk, Aaron Marrant, Dwight Niehoff, Nathan Vaughn, Justin Plumb, and Mike Densberger of Lincoln, Nebraska all turned in their early bird entries and saved money on their event entry fee.
Although the deadline for the specially priced early bird entry fee has passed, any and all USRA Modified drivers may still compete. Although the odds of making the field are better for the drivers choosing to compete on both nights, any driver can still come in on the second night and make the starting grid because both Saturday and Sunday racing are separate nights of racing with drivers competing in two heat races on either night as these are two separate nights and two separate programs. So, if a driver is locked into a point’s battle at another track on Saturday nights, he or she can still come to CMS and race their way onto the grid on Sunday night and still have a shot at earning the outside pole position!
Weekend plans include another charity fund-raiser with two-seater car rides with driver Shad Badder for $50 per ride around the track at race speed. The money raised from the rides and the 50/50 ticket sales over the weekend will be donated to Heart Health for the local community. Former winners of the event include a plethora of Modified talent both from touring series and the best from the MO-KAN region and beyond. Former winners include Justin Boney-1998, Chad Lyle-1999/2000/2001, Richard Layne-2002, Tim Karrick-2003, Jason Hughes-2004, Dean Wille-2005, Jason Hughes-2006, Kelly Shryock-2007/2011, Jeremy Payne-2008, Terry Phillips-2009, Dustin Boney-2010, Zack VanderBeek-2014, and Jim Moody-2015.
Matt Dotson was the first USRA Modified driver to throw his name into the hat for a chance to win the bonus money added by CMS Promoters Earl and Susan Walls. If Dotson wins this race, he will receive a $2,500 bonus. Then, if he goes on to sweep the special events weekend when the Labor Day weekend rolls around, he will earn a $5,000 bonus! However, if Dotson doesn’t win this weekend, the driver who does will then also be competing for a $2,500 bonus for taking two of three specials should they go on to win the Labor Day special event later this season.
If needed, the contingency weather plan will see the schedules shift a day forward. If Saturday, July 2nd is canceled due to weather, that program will shift to Sunday, July 3rd and the original program for Sunday, July 3rd will move to Monday, July 4th. If Saturday’s program is completed but Sunday’s program is weathered out, the day two program will move to Monday the 4th. If both Saturday and Sunday are canceled due to weather CMS will announce possible makeup information at a later date. Primitive camping is available at the track, campers need to check in with the pit office upon arrival, all campers are responsible for cleaning up their area upon leaving.
